Well I doubt ill see Hand of Fire in the stores for quite some time yet as im in the UK. I have only seen Crown of Fire so far but not Spellfire. I do however have both of the original novels and luckily havent read them yet, so Ill definatly want to read the new revised versions as they have extra material. I once started Spellfire as one of my first FR novels many years ago but just couldnt get into Ed Greenwoods style of writing.
Still, i might wait to see if WotC release Shandril's Saga as "normal" size books rather than the oversized ones which are currently out. Why on earth did they do that!?

The question is, are they going to release them in "normal" book size? I don't think so, they havent done it with silverfall, stories of the seven sisters. |
With each post i grow wiser and with added wisdom I grow stronger. |

*busts out laughing... and ends up rolling around on the floor* OMG... they made such a funny... and relatively big error... hehe... page 150 of Hand of Fire... they go from having sharantyr leading a horse... to Shandril dropping the reigns of the same horse (cept shandril is still quite a ways away) i just read over this... and was like "wtf... where did shandril come from"... then busted out laughing realizing the big mistake as it is... |

Hand of Fire wasn't that impressive as Ed's other books. Though the end of the novel was a nice twist. |

I do, AK. The book as a whole was pretty entertaining, but I didn't like the end at all. It felt like Ed was just looking for any way to end the story and happened to pick that particular one. Not a good ending for one of the coolest story concepts in the Realms. Fantasy is supposed to come with happy endings, damnit!(well, at least most of the time) Not like the one that ended this last book! Especially since the both of them were forced into their situations having to deal with all that crap through all three books. And that's what they get for their troubles? What a let down! |

somewhere on the site for the wizards whom dwell on the coast... there was a log of the chat with Ed about Hand of Fire... where he explains things... and he said he had the thing in mind for quite some time... that either he had to write the story... or give someone else a chance to write it (which'd fudge it up) so he did it... and ended it that way... as he was planning to have it end somehow that way and he wanted to make sure he did the writing for it instead of some other WoTC writer...
I'd have to see if i can find a link... tho i usually have bad luck searching for things on wizards site... |

That's interesting. I wonder why he'd WANT to end it that way. It's such a bummer ending to three really good books. I REALLY wanted Shan and Narm to finally come out on top, especially after all they went through. If you happen to find the link, definitely send it along. I'd really like to hear the authors thoughts about that. |

well i can't rind the link... i've searched all over wizards... i can't even find a log of one of his chats... but i know i remember reading it somewhere that either he had to write the book... or risk someone else continuing the storyline and making a mess of what he started... or some such... i can't recall the specifics... |

The end was great, finally a book where the hero dies or isn't able to stand up to insurmountable odds. Also it bring's back the saying, "Play with fire and you are gonna get burned". |

I always felt that Shandril was going to end up "out of the way". I thought she'd end up secluded on Evermeet or something like that. The reason for this is that Shandril is a fantastic novel character but an awful gaming character. Her powers (and every player's desire to be a spellfire wielder) make game balance difficult when you are actually playing D&D. Just like everyone wants to play a dual wielding drow, have their elf inherit a moonblade, or be an apprentice to Elminster, spellfire is something that should be left for Epic Level campaigns (which are popular, and justly so, but not my cup of tea). Shandril dead is also easier to deal with re the progression of the FR campaign setting. Now we don't have to worry about trying to explain just why she didn't appear here, here and HERE to combat the evil X. Nice and neat Ed, thanks.

Hey guys---remember ArcticKnight's warning about posting minor SPOILERS?
Maybe Alaundo can label this thread as having a few major spoilers so that those who have not read the book yet are warned before they view this thread. |

Well, I was trying to keep them light. Kind of hard when we're talking about the ending of the book, though.
George: All good reasons for Ed to end the book as he did, but I'm still REALLY bummed he did it that way. If anyone deserved a happy ending in the Realms, it was those two. |

Hey Voronica.. i dun suppose you remember the chat or such that Ed did talking about why he did the ending he did? or maybe you can ask him to explain it... i can't seem to find the link to the page on Wizards.com that i recall reading where he explained the means behind the end... |

Zacas- I need to catch up with Ed about a few things, so I'll ask him. As I know he's up to his eyeballs in work, it may take a few days for an answer! You know how those Canadians are... |

Hey voronica, did you get a hold of Ed to ask about Hand of Fire and the reasons behind the ending, for me? |

Hey Zacas-
Ed and I have been so busy the last week, him with his projects, and me turning in my first draft for Crimson Gold as well as our day jobs, that we are going to get to catch up next week. As soon as I hear back from him on that, I'll let you know.
But, here is the transcript for the interview I think you were talking about.

yeah, that was it... for some reason i wasn't able to find it when i searched... and i coulda sworn there was something about how either Wizards was gonna set someone else to the task of writing (maybe it was another book) if he didn't write the book... |

Even though I usually will go to bat for Mr. Greenwood. I was extremely disappointed with Hand of Fire, and not just because of the ending which, by the way I thought needed to happen. I felt like his heart was not in the book and that it was written like he just wanted to get it over. I may be mistaken, but that is defiantly the feeling I got reading this book. |
Wow! That has no saving throw written all over it. |

The log of Ed's September 2002 chat is a dead link at wizards.com, but he says a lot about Hand of Fire there. Ed knew how the story would turn out when he wrote Spellfire. Shandril passes Mystra's test. Ed has future plans for the character. |

That chat was indeed informative. I think I have a copy of that chat Faraer speaks of Mythander. I'll locate it when I get home from my exam today, and email a copy to you.
