Im thinking of pinching on an idea from the novel Escape from Undermoutain and basing it on the Blood war
Basicly the PCs come across a room with a 8x8 of 10 foot square checkered Squares (a Chess board) the PCs can not cross the room with out crossing the chess board and the first square the PC steps into determine what movement they can make
Now I was thinking of giving it a Blood War theme
Tanna'ri on one side Baatezu on the other
Then I was thinking what Demon/Devil should be what piece
Pawns: Dretchs/Lemures Castles: Vrocks/Bone Devils King: Balor/Pit Fiend Queen: Marlinth/Horned Devil Knights: Succubus/Erinyes Bishops: Hezrou/Barbed Devil

What about glabrezus? Those would fit better than vrocks. |

For the baatezu I'd included some abishai in the ranks of pawn, maybe even a number of barbazu. The amnizu would make perfects bishops. I'd make the cornugons knights, simply because they are the "elite" defensive forces of the baatezu armies.
For the tanar'ri hordes I'd have the bar-lgura represent pawns; the rutterkin are also another possibility. The molydeus would be included for the options of castles, given their roles as guardians among the tanar'ric horde. The hezrou I think, would make intriguing knights, although the nabassu could work just as well.
And since we are talking about the Blood War here, you need to involve the 'loths. Hehe... perhaps the chess players themselves are the yugoloths, manipulating the mock Blood War battles on the game board just as they do in actual reality.
