No doubt many are aware of the recent forum downtime which started yesterday at around 17:45GMT. I'm unsure as to when the forum actually came back but the first posts didn't start to come in until after 06:00GMT. This is certainly the most lengthy downtime we have had with this issue!
The issue started again a couple of days ago, with short bursts of downtime, and strangely (and hopefully) it may not resurface for a couple of months.
So again, apologies for the inconvenience caused by this and may I also take this opportunity to again thank those who have kindly donated funds to aid in the running and improvement of Candlekeep. This will certainly be going to good use. Many, many thanks. My appreciate cannot be expressed enough.
It went down while I was crafting a post on my lunch break, at about 12:45. I was checking it off and on all day after that. I don't think it was back up until shortly after 1 a.m. or so, local (Eastern). |

Yeah, I know it was up at 7am yesterday, but I didn't see it again until this morning - but I wasn't checking last night (Kianna and I finally procured a 360 - which means she won't be posting for awhile). However, since she just plays FPSes, I will have lots of time to post.

I'm leaving the purchase of my 360 until after my return from holidays (from the 24th of this month and right till just after New Year's).
That's right fellow scribes, the Sage will be taking his lady friend and little baby girl on a small trip -- which also means I'll probably be dropping off here at Candlekeep as well .
Anyways, the reason for my post.
I was going to discuss this in PM with Alaundo as we got closer to the 24th, but since this has become an issue again... Big Al, on this trip I'll have an opportunity to talk to (and work with) a software development friend of mine. I'm hoping he can customise that program I was talking to you about earlier in the year... specifically for Candlekeep. So I might just have a slightly delayed Christmas gift for you and everyone here at Candlekeep upon my return.

Well, I was trying to check at about 8 or 8:30 PST (not sure what the GMT would be >.<) and it was down still. I was talking to Kuje about it, and he said there were server problems again. |
Ack! I seem to have too much blood in my coffee stream!

I have no added a function to the forum to control member and IP blocking, over what is already provided. This may help the situation. Looking at the Active User list at the moment, there are 21 guests currently logged in (and 17 members). Out of these 21 guests, 14 are from the same IP subnet range (i.e. these are the spiders) and thus take up connections to the database... too many connections cause the forum to lock. These spiders hammer away at the database causing numerous connections, and although I have blocked that IP range, they may still have connections in place. Blocked members\IP are redirected to a "banned" page. I'm not sure if this will work as the database is still required in order to process the member upon arrival. So, for now, I guess we'll have to wait and see |

Having delved further, the culprits are from an indexing site by the name of "inktomisearch". I have taken some extra measures to try and prevent this site from accessing Candlekeep.
Hmm I wonder who owns "Inktomisearch" and where its based, might be worth looking into taking some legal action if they keep it up what there doing is basicly a Denial of Service attack on the Candlekeep forum server |

Having had a look around, Candlekeep isn't the only place to have been affected in this way. A good number of other sites and forums have had the same issues caused by this very source |

No, it isn't.
I, and a small number of PS devotees, have been working round-the-clock to get one of the most popular PS forums back up an running -- The Bone-Box Rattler. When we tried to upload a new version of the software for the boards, we were encountering similar security issues to those that have been plaguing these halls for the last few days... imagine our collective anger at seeing all our recent hard work nearly wasted .

What is it with people? I just don't understand people who go out of their way to annoy others. This forum is the best for FR junkies and occasionalists around, and the fact that some jerkoffs from some other site decide to mess things up - well, I just hope Karma deals them the hands they decide to deal.

To be fair, in the defense of these "irritants"... sometimes the results are unintentional.
Spiders are effective devices when used properly, and when they are used on the web, it is usually a poor understanding of their internal coding that leads to the kinds of problems we are experiencing currently here at Candlekeep.
The person, or persons, responsible may not even have specifically targetted this forum. Its disruption could simply be nothing more than link (or URL association) from visitors who have recently interacted with the troublesome spider software.
I'm not sure how clear this is to some of you, but all of this could merely be the result of someone's inadequate incorporation of a spider bot elsewhere on the web. As I said, they may not have specifically intended to create difficulties here.

Yes it should be stressed that attack/calls might not be intended to cause such distress. As I indicated before Google uses a spider. What might be the problem is this spider is running at T3 speeds and full speed, takin up band width. Of course this might also be intentional full speed collection of data. One might try to contact domain owner to look into the problem. A spider slowed down will not cause problems which can be as simple as coding a few second delays before opening a new link. |

Ok, that is true, and I understand what your saying. I just wish that people thought through the things they code so that they can comprehend the far-reaching consequences of their actions. I understand that it might have been unintentional, but seeing what all a project might effect might have been a bit wise.

Remember that not all guests are spiders. I've just had another check and out of the 11 guests currently on the forums, only 5 are from the aforementioned location. It looks like we might be coming to the end of it |
