I still don't think I can do it. I don't like the idea of an evil hero. The farthest I could go would probably still be called neutral. You only have nine ways of describing this in a game, after all. In real life there're no boundries. So what I'm saying is that in a game, I couldn't do it. In a more "real life" story, I could. It's a matter of degree.

You're also not a man. The few women role-players I've met have been much more interested in role-playing than men, in general. Men often get hung up on the minutiae of the mechanics ("How many meters an my character move in 12.7 seconds?"). Men also seem to be much more interested in having powerful character who lord it over weaker folks (PCs and NPCs).

Really? I would have thought that women would be interesting in the details, and that men would just want to get on with hacking and slashing.

I was speaking of what I preceive to be general inclinations, based on my limited experience role-playing with women.

Obviously, you role-play with at least one woman 100% of the time.

Well, the game is called a 'Role-Playing' game, so I think it's better to take on the character personality and not your own. My trouble is, I tend to play PC's that are very altruistic and idelaistic, much like I am in real life (at least I like to think so) so I guess I'm kind of contradicting myself there.
When I DM however, it's another story altogether. If the NPC is just an evil SOB, then I play him as such (much to the chagrin of my players). I can remember a game where the PC's in the group got captured by slavers and were on their ship for about two weeks while on route to their lair, and the main NPC was the leader of them. I made him to be a cleric of Cyric, very evil, sadistic and cruel, as a real slaver would be IMO. Soooooo, when he saw that one of the PC's was a beautiful woman, he basically had his way with her, and invited the whole crew to do the same, which they did. He healed her every time so as not to 'damage the merchandise'. Now THAT'S evil to me. Just so you know, the PC got revenge and disemboweld him at the finale of the game.

Well, in my opinion, it depends on the RPG. If its a FR or a DnD RPG, then I generally go with a character that most suits me. If its a character that I just create to RPG with my friends at school, I'll sometimes change the personality to make it somewhat interesting. In my opinion, (and I'm not dissing anyone here), I think its good to switch once and a while. It gives you a better variety (and your friends don't get tired of the same typical thing over and over). Plus, in the case of my drow character, since I haven't really finished her story (and certainly not sent the newer version to my editor...he's probably fuming about that right now anyway. Sorry about that! I've been busy with work and school ) I've got a little bit of room to put surprises into her life and her personality. But, with a character I created a long time ago, she is totally different than me. She's more towards the true neutral area just because of the fact that she's an assassin. But this character is way different than I am usually. I, myself, am generally a Neutral Good or Lawful Good...well at least on a daily basis. (I mentioned something about my alignment in the "what is your alignment" thread...I don't know where it's at now). So I'm for either or. Playing a character closely similar to yourself is fun, but one that isn't is also just as good. It gives you a better variety and you somewhat get a challenge if you make a character that is almost basically unlike you.

"What's that," asked Mogget.
"Sardines," said Sam. "I knew they were standard rations, so I got a few tins for you."
"What are sardines?" Moggest asked suspiciously. "And why is there a key? Is this some sort of Abhorsen joke?"

Yasraena: I just hope you didn't go into detail about that! It would really have killed any fun, I think.

Sadon: Don't worry, I'm not foaming at the mouth. Yet. Take your time. I've had people wait a long time for my stories, too. Which is partly why I haven't shared so many with you. I don't have time to write the way I used to when I was *ahem* your age. (Young whippersnapper!)

Yeah! At least I've got time to work on it now. Lol. Don't worry, I'll hopefully have the first part of it to you by this weekend or next.

And who're you calling a "whippersnapper"? I'm almost an adult. (emphasize on the "almost" part. ). Well anyway, I said I'd get you the story a long time ago...and I haven't had a chance yet. So I'm going to work really hard on it (after homework) then send it to ya.

"What's that," asked Mogget.

Well, not graphic detail anyway. I'm not that sadistic, even if the NPC was.

Spoiler (sort of)!!!

For example, if you were playing Drizzt Do'Urden while he was still in the Underdark, would you play as chaotic evil, as would be expected of a drow character, or bend the rules and act like yourself, leaving Menzoberranzan to go to the surface and live as a Chaotic Good character?

Personally, I think that you should play a compromise between your character's personality and your own, but tell me what you think.

Do not listen to anyone but me. That is my powers speaking * bottles them up* Anyway. Both! Look at this way, when you first start to playa role playing game play chars that are FAR from being YOU... And role play them that way. Why you might ask? It keeps you from getting to attached to a chair that might end up passing on in a future gamming session. This is a GOOOOOOD thing. It will also help you get in touch which the act of actually RPING the char and ot just spouting out what you would do and then doing it. It opens the gates to far more things you can do etc. THEN ... once you get things down, make chars more like yourself so you can rp them better... after going through loosing chairs you dont have a deep connection with... you wont have any problems loosing one that is just you in another skin. Easy adn spimple things.

It is definantly much much more important to play as your character. I mean as far as the NPCs are concerned you don't even exist. I mean it is a whole other realm or world. Why would one want to play as themselves anyway? I mean when I play; I play to get away from the troubles and $hit going on in the real world. Besides its really fun to act like someone else .

spirit. it is the hero's strength, the mother's resilieance, and the poor man's armor. it cannot be broken, and it cannot be taken away. this i must believe.

If others players were like me, of course.

Bookwrym, I am greatly surprised in everything you have read, that you haven't even heard of Michael Moorcock's Elric of Melinbone (sp?). I haven't read it, but I have heard TONS about it.

Oh, I always have an opinion on something, Zemd -- just not on things I know nothing about. If it's that, I reserve judgement.

I'll take a look for these books. I've got a $50 -- excuse me, 5 gp -- card to Barnes & Noble that's just begging to be used. Now that I'm past exams, I can actually devote time to more fun things, like a good book. Or Candlekeep.
