Hey everyone, I'm new to Candlekeep so I apoligize if this stuff has been brought up before.
As soon as our current game ends I will be DMing a game where the PC's are part of the Zhentarim. We're experienced players so I don't think the evil thing will be a problem. What I'm wondering is...
What books do you all recommend reading to get a better feel for the Zhentarim? I've read enough books and played enough realms to have a good feel for the world but I'm specifically looking for more Zhent material.
Thanks in advance.

First, Welcome to Candlekeep!
Okay, first of all, there's the boxed set Ruins of Zhentil Keep... There's also Lords of Darkness, a 3E supplement.
As for novels... Ed Greenwood's Shandril's Saga would be the first that comes to mind, along with Thornhold, by Elaine Cunningham. |

Thanks for the quick response. I've read "Spellfire", haven't yet read the second two books in the series. I've already read Thornhold as well.
I know that sometimes they allow free download of older edition material, is Ruins of Zhentil Keep available for free download anywhere? |

The best legal I could find was http://www.svgames.com/tsr1120esd.html it though does require a few USA Dollars. |

Thru an odd twist of fate, I'm off from work today.

Sadly, no...
The link Kentinal provided is likely your best bet... Unless you're like me, and prefer the original hardcopy in your hand. In that case, I'd recommend eBay. |

Besides the books that have already been mentioned, check out Richard Lee Byers' novel, The Rage. Some parts of that novel show the Zhentarim organization in action. |

The Shadow of the Avatar trilogy has some awesome Zhent action. It's by Greenwood. It's one of the best trilogies in the FR library.
Silverfall has some Zhent moments, especially Storm's story. That particular section has some juicy Zhent bits. |
"That's right, hurl back views that force ye to think by name-calling - 'tis the grand old tradition, let it not down! Anything to keep from having to think, or - Mystra forfend - change thy own views!"
Narnra glowered at her father. "Just how am I to learn how to think? By being taught by you?"
"Some folk in the Realms would give their lives for the chance to learn at my feet," Elminster said mildly. "Several already have."

Oh, and though it doesn't focus on them, you can see some of the Zhents in action in Crusade, as well. |
