I am an AVID reader of all forgotten realms products, and browse the Candlekeep site semi-frequently, but have a question that has been bugging me since i started reading "The Alabaster Staff."

Without spoiling the book for anyone who may or may not have read it, there are NUMEROUS references to Bane as being the chief deity for the Zhentarim. It was my understanding that in the Waterdeep/Tantras/Shadowdale (avatar Trilogy), he was killed off, and Cyric rose to succeed himself and Bhaal. Is Bane back? Was this introduced through a novel, a suppliment/accessory, or some kind of adventure? Was this perhaps something missed through editing, and they meant Xvim or Cyric instead but just 'went with it'? The Novel is post Avatar since it is i believe 13-15 years after the 'Time of Troubles,' so that would be post Bane to my knowledge.

I'm an Avid reader and by that i mean the entire 17 (i believe) issue Harper series, the Drizzt series from the Dark Elf Tril, Icewind Dale Tril, Starless night series, and the Paths of Darkness tril, the Cleric Quintet, the first four in the Sembia series, the damn Crusade Trilogy (twice), the "Realms" short stories books, the Avatar Trilogy, plus many more (god knows i love FR), i've read many boxed sets, adventures and accessories and NO WHERE do i find anything about Bane being alive again ... I had stopped purchasing FR books and stuff a couple of years back (about 5), however recently went on a $700 Barnes and Noble extravaganza to bring myself back up to speed since these 3.0 and 3.5 rules came out, and with all the stuff i've browsed to find mention of this and none of my FR stuff has this ...

Help me out! ;-) SOMEONE has to know!

In the FRCS, it gave us a small note saying that on this one particular night, all worshippers of Iyachtu Xvim had a dream where they saw him split apart and Bane emerge from within.

So Bane came back, at the cost of one who was in my opinion a cooler evil deity.

MUCH Cooler, Xvim had such potential that was never really tapped into in anything i've read. Where does that leave the 'Prince of Lies' within things? Also is that the reprinted Campaign Setting? if so i might have to pick it up, as that was one of the things I decided could be skipped (thinking it was simply a reprint or a combination of the old CS and or the book that i forgot the name of at the moment that basically did a brief overview of a few different areas of the realms through a 'story' type of thing (not the Atlas, this one had a white cover with a picture that was overused on other materials with a fighter battling some kind of mage, sword and staff connected)...but anyway, if theres that kind of new info i'll definately have to earmark it for pickup!

From Faiths and Pantheons (paraphrased):
Midwinter night of 1372 DR, Xvim burst into green flame and Bane emerged from the smoking husk, his right hand blazing with green fire. Apparenly Xvim had been just a sentient cocoon, and within days, all the Xvimlar had converted to worship of Bane.

By the way, has anyone heard of Xvim's Green-Eyed Gauntlet? I think it's from Magic of Faerun. It grants darkvision 60', I think can cast light once per day, and phantasmal killer one time. Anyway, I wondered if it was named for this Xvim, or if it was a coinicidence. It's a black gauntlet, with green jewels, but it's not inherently evil.

I'm not personally familiar with it, but it sounds familiar. I'm away from my books, so I can't check, but I believe that a black gauntlet with green eyes on it was Xvim's symbol.

It also says in the Everis Cale Triology that Bane has returned, and the Zhents are split between Cyricists and Banites. It seems like the Banites are wining though.

"Even before he first walked the world as a mortal, Cyric had the will to resist the random call of Fate and make his own fortune. As his newborn soul stood before the goddesses, he cast a light upon Tymora's silver coin, blinding them to his presence. The deities never saw the coin fall, never settled their wager on Cyric's destiny. Thus was he born into the world without any fate save the one he himself could forge." -- from the Cyrinishad

Yeah, the Zhents were following Bane long before they followed Cyric. It makes sense that a large number of them would immediately convert back.

Not to mention the fact that Cyric was responsible for the complete destruction of Zhentil Keep (story found in prince of lies, is also the same book where Cyric read the Cyrinishad and went mad for a time). Anyway, my point is that most Zhents probably don't have a real fond place in their heart for the Prince of Lies. Well except in Darkhold, but who understands the Phereghost anyway.

Also the Banites that appear in the Alabaster staff are likely Banites from Mourktar not Zhentil Keep. The church of Bane in Mourktar never converted to Cyric or Xvim.

Is there a novel that deals with Bane's return? If not, there should be.

There isn't and it's been asked for repeatedly. WOTC keeps telling Ed, and others, no.

For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

Indeed.

The only true sources we have on Bane's return are Cloak & Dagger and the FRCS.

I am currently running a campaign taking place after the Times of Trouble. Would one of you be so kind as do write me a short summary of the return of Bane? Since i havent read any material describing it to me, it is a new thing to me. My group have had quite serious dealings with him during ToT and if he returns, they will most likely feel it...

Hope it is posible... Just the broad picture of the events. Thanks in advance.

Does WOTC have a logical opinion for that position? I mean, a novel dealing with the Tyrant´s return would sell like crazy.

Damn right there! A LOT of people have said on numerous forums that they would jump at picking up a novel on Bane's return. I certainly would! I know that forum members are a minority and a small selection of Realms fans on the whole, but i'm sure it would go down a storm!

I wish WotC would listen to this constant request. Even a poll on their site would be welcomed. At least then they would know.
