While most goblins end up being anonymous foes to fall under the blades and spells of adventurers, the names of a few have made their way into the lore of more civilized races. It's even said that within the library of Herald's Holdfast the details of the histories and badges of goblinkind are stored (Cormanthyr - Empire of Elves).

I've compiled a document which contains known goblins from over 30 FR campaign sources, including novels, short stories, game supplements, and video games. I've searched far more than 30 but not all contain information on specific individuals or tribes. (Nearly all, however, contain some reference to my favorite little guys!)

The document is actually several lists. The list of individual goblins contains: name, tribe (when known), location, a brief bio, and the relevant reference material. I've also got lists of tribes, weapons, feats, and other info.

I was wondering whether this has already been done by someone. Maybe I should post an abridged list to see whether anyone knows of any I've missed?

As Maglubiyet, I know I should know this without reference material, but even the goblins' gods can't keep track of all these guys! Let me know if anyone is interested in this project. Candlekeep seems like the right site to post this info. I'd also be willing to send the document. It's currently in an Access database but I could put it in a variety of formats.

I'm sure Big Al will be happy to take that scroll and add it to the library. If not, I'd certainly be interested in seeing your work, and I'm sure more than a few others would be, as well.

Well met

Oh indeed I would certainly like to see this work, Maglubiyet

For some strange reason, I have had an interest and facination for goblins and goblinkin, and this resource sounds absolutely wonderful. There is certainly worthy shelf space here at Candlekeep for such a work, please contact me forthwith with this, Maglubiyet Thank ye.

so am i. there are few things more satisfying than confronting a mid-level party (9-10) with a well thought-out goblin encounter.

Just be extra careful with that transfer into other formats... especially from a piece of software as finicky as Access.

Other than that, I'd love to see what you have on this...

Wow, great to see there's interest in this. I've sent the lists to Alaundo so hopefully he can make some use of them. I didn't include stats on any of the goblins so nobody get their hopes up. A couple of them had basic 3.x info like class, level, alignment, but basically it's just a list of names with brief descriptions. It was hard enough to track the buggers down!

One thing I noticed is that many of the goblins I found were from the works of Mr. Salvatore. He always seems to name a single goblin who invariably dies a horrible death. What do you suppose he has against the little guys?

Did you happen to transfer the information to other formats? I only ask because not every scribe here has access to "Access"...

You're asking me? I once had had my players find a crude charcoal sketch of an ogre, his wife and daughter, with the words "I love you daddy" written in in broken common on it. Of course they found it on the body of the ogre they spot on "patrol" and ambush.

Are we confining ourselves just to goblins, or are we talking hobgoblins, orcs, bugbears, et. al. also?

I struggled with this one for a while but I finally decided to limit the list to just goblins. My definition is "any creature, on the face of Toril, which could be produced in the natural way from another goblin." This includes: goblins, blues, Batiri, and half-goblins.

So no hobgoblins, bugbears, or Dekanter goblins and no goblins from other campaign settings including wildspace and the planes. Also no goblins from generic D&D settings (but I would've loved to include the Yar-Gock tribe, Konkar, Floki Longfingers, Tzrg, and dozens of others - maybe in another list) Still, even with those restrictions I managed to find close to 50 named goblins in Faerun.

Others may disagree with the choices I made to limit the list. Maybe my definition uses circular reasoning, but I had to draw the line somewhere! I did include documentation on the criteria I used so people can follow my logic.

One resource I didn't tap was old issues of Dragon Magazine. I don't have easy access to them but I know Ed Greenwood did a regular column on the Realms. His characters and storylines usually revolve around characters approaching the demi-god level though it's probable that he makes reference to histories or items relating to goblins at some point. Anyone want to check?

Hey, no Microsoft bashing here! I get enough of that at work.

There have been seven regular columns and many other articles. I checked his pieces in Dragon #30-200: a bunch of goblin references, but not to individual goblins.

That isn't a characteristic of Ed's writing in general! Just of some of the novels TSR and WotC have asked him to write.

Thanks, Faraer! It was nagging at me that I didn't know what was contained in those articles. The only things I can remember about the early issues are Snitz Revenge and the Awful Green Things From Outer Space.

Interesting scroll. I was mildly disturbed by the entry for the half-goblin Zeth. What drunk/sick human male was responsible for THAT?!

Many thanks ol' Sage! I often forget that there is more to Candlekeep than dusty ol' scrolls to page through!

As for Alystra's question: I dare say the same sort that might be responsible for being drugged by a sadistic female goblin...or just a depraved madman...or a Philter of Love even...who can say when fantasy is involved!

The Old Grey Box and AD&D for me!
