I need to learn how many crew do sailing ships need and how are they armed.
I also wonder about the military ships.
Well if there is any specific source on the issue of the ships of north or equivalent ones that I can compare I would appreciate greatly.

Now mind I haven't gamed in quite sometime, but I do think that there is info in either the DMG or PH that should give you a good start to what you need to know about manning ships, and sizes or what not. Also what types of weapons are found on them as well.Happy searching.

Fornlon, it depends on what kind of ships you are talking about. Merchant trading ships would not have a large crew as they fill their cargo space with products and sometimes even have passengers. These would only have the standard crewmen who would also double as guards in raids.

As for pirate ships, these are filled with men. They are the ones with like at least two scores of men in the cargo hold armed to the teeth with melee and missile weapons, waiting to board enemy ships for loot. The pirate ships would also have very little cargo at all as the room is mostly used to hold ammunition for cannons and also to house the extra large crew. They are likely to have as little as possible of foodstuff, water, etc because pirates stay in the coast and don't often sail far from their hideout. Some pirate vessels, especially the successful ones, would have even more men on board because they often take slaves to help row the boat.

PDK's recommendation of the Blue Dragons scroll is a great resource

I'd also like to point out the old 2nd edition AD&D product - Of Ships and Sea, which contains all manner of information on various vessels etc.

Thank you all.

Jerry Davis' article might be useful, indeed. But unfortunately I don't have 2nd edition AD&D product - Of Ships and Sea and probably I won't be able to find it. I think I m gonna stick with the article.

I also have a question about the fleets of nations. I m running a campaign in Tethyr involving Calimshan also.
How large are their fleets? I believe Calimshan' s fleet is one of the largest in Toril, but how large, if anyone has a clue it would be really nice.

Hmm empires of the shining sea gives a few numbers to work on.

page 68 (El Nallojal)

" The cities with large naval forces are Almravien and Teshburl, but all of the port cities have specially designated naval piers and wharves. There are always at least 12 ships in any Calishite or nearby allied port and no fewer then 30 moored in Almravien, Calimport, Memnon and Teshburl.

The SRD (see my signature) also has some very basic information about ships and other basic vehicles in the "Equipment" section (i.e. these are the most recently updated 3.5 rules)

Also check out the Seafarer's Handbook if you can. That is a wonderful resource and has all kinds of info on ships, sailors, seas, oceans, creatures, rules, and more, though it is not realms specific.

Information from PHB 3,5 is good too, Purple Dragon Knight but eventhough it is cannon I liked Jerry Davis' article much more.
In article there are more details, and I suppose Cormyr is not more advanced in naval technics than Calimshan or Waterdeep so they can easily be adjusted to any campaign, at least mine.

Seafarer's handbook, 25$. Looking to the price, it must be one hell of book, Wood Elf Ranger but unfortunately I m a little short for this moment. Thanks anyway, I hope I will be able to use this source one day.

By the way I counldn't find anything about mangonels and balistas.
How much demage do they cause? And how much hp does the hull of a ship have? I mean with balista, mangonel or magic how much demage is needed to make a ship sink?

Well, I wouldn't exactly call the PHB canon, for realms(or any setting) specific information.

The Arms and Equipment Guide(3rd edition) though has stats for various large ship based weapons, as well as fairly good rules(some of the better ones I have seen thus far) for vehicular combat.

I swear I remember a more modern source of rules for vehicle combat, but I might be mistaken.

No problem. I loved that particular tome, in fact, all the old blue DM's Supplements were among my favorite 2nd edition products Ahhh, the good ol' days.

This is an extremely broad question and I doubt I could post everything you need but I'll post a few tidbits from the Seafarer's Handbook.

quote:
Seafarer's Handbook
Ship Hulls
Small - 20hp
Medium - 20hp
Large - 30hp
Huge - 40hp
Gargantuan - 50hp
Colossal - 60hp
p.102

Ballista: The ballista is essentially a very large crossbow. It makes attacks with a straight attack roll (1d20) with no modifications except for range. Loading and locking a ballista is 3 full rounds. p.106

There are a ton of other ship weapons detailed though I do not see mangonel. There is also a whole section devoted to ship-to-ship combat. There isn't too much on magic but with those hp scores you should be able to figure out how much it would take to severely damage a ships hull. Hope this helps, if you have any other questions feel free to ask

Thanks, Wood Elf Ranger but I have no further questions. I tried to animate the encounter 60 pirate and a 9 lv mage agains a 30 man and 13 lv bard but I couldn't handle his very well. From now on I will try to avoid these kind of situations:))
