Best part has to be the Halruaa section. The picture of Halarahh surprised me. I didn't expect the city to look like that. I mean, I knew magic is everything in that nation, but not like this!

Lurue's Horn! Halarahh looks most intriguing... I actually like that image.

On the other hand, that blade the one Crinti chic is weilding looks most inefficient.

Wow it does look pretty nice!

Although, its absolutely nothing like what was described in Elaine Cunningham's Counsellors and Kings Trilogy

Nevertheless, i'm looking forward to this tome, i'm sure it will be a vast improvement on the old Shining South 2nd ed. accessory.

At last

I'll admit that I haven't purchased several of the last few FR sourcebooks released, but that's only because I've felt that they have been "flavor-lite".

This new sourcebook looks like it will be different though. And, since I campaign mostly in southern Faerun, this will be a necessary purchase for me.

Do we know anything about the types of prestige classes that will be included in the sourcebook?

I saw a pic on the wizard.com site for excerpt to Shining South Sourcebook. They have picture of warriors on horseback attacking people. Are they Drow?

Those are Crinti. The Crinti are a race of half-drow that rule Dambrath, which is one of Halruaa's neighbor's. They're not an overly friendly bunch.

Nope, there are no time outs when fighting them. I haven't gotten a chance to read the full Halruaa portion of the excerpt. But, the artwork in that portion of this preview is incredible.

The Criniti? I've never heard of them before? Does anyone have any information on this race? Also, why would people allow them to rule Dambrath, since they do have drow blood and are evil.

I highly recommend you read the Counsellors and Kings trilogy, it features the Crinti and will give you the flavor you need.

I found this in the halls of Candlekeep just now, I believe its from an article that WotC had on their site at some point. It's written by Elaine Cunningham (who wrote the above mentioned trilogy).

That trilogy is quite good -- I recently reread it.

However, when you read the article linked above, do keep this stuff I'm quoting in mind. It's from the scroll about the Shining South sourcebook.

For the record, I would advise that you completely ignore the article on Crinti history I wrote for the WotC website. This article was apparently removed from the website archives, and I assume that WotC has had second thoughts about the content. (I emailed several people at WotC and asked about this, but never received a response. That's usually a pretty good indicator.)

I actually got a hold of it and used it in my development. I did have to noodge some of the dates a bit, but I made it all work pretty well with only minor tinkering, and I think it made the region more interesting in the end. So even if the original article has vanished, it lives in in the supplement (unless the developers changed anything, which I doubt, because the editor and I went over some of that stuff right toward the end of the process, so I believe it's intact).

I just finished reading the article in the link that Lord Rad had posted and I find the history of the Crinti very interesting. I am just kinda surprised that an alliance between the drow and the people of Dambrath could last this long and well. After all, the drow can barely even ally with one of their own, let along foreigners living in the surface.

Ah, but when it's in their best interest, the drow can maintain an alliance.

But that's the point! They can't maintain alliances even when it is in their best interest! For example, in the march against Mithril Hall, Matron Baenre took the time to dispose a rival matron mother when she should have been focusing on the battle against the dwarves. Then in WotSQ book 2, those matron mothers were plotting to overthrow the First Mother even when the city was in chaos on the verge of rebellion and their powers were gone! I mean, come on, use some common sense.

But in those cases, they were going to benefit from the betrayal. The drow city that the Crinti are allied with would gain no benefit at all from betraying the rulers of Dambrath.

So I should have been a bit more clear: when it's in their best interest, and they have nothing to gain from the betrayal, and the other member(s) of the alliance don't pose a threat, then they can maintain an alliance.

That article certainly has me looking forward to Shining South very much. The artwork really impressed me as I've been fairly impartial to some of it in recent Realms products.

Though the artwork is never a factor for me, I'm quite looking forward to getting this book. The goodness that was SK has me looking forward to revisiting one of my fave areas.
