OK, so I will be a bit overpowered here. Still, I will be here in Pensacola, Florida in the panhandle, about 100 miles from the eye of Hurrican Ivan if the path holds. I may be out of contact for a few days, maybe weeks. I'm right on the border of Florida/Alabama and the hurricane is supposed to hit on the Alabama/Mississippi border. Just to let you know how short a distance that really is, I could drive to Mississippi in about an hour and a half. I'm well inland so the major concern here is wind and falling trees. Time to batten down the hatches.

Now I have Dennis the Menace headed my way! Last year Ivan the Terrible devastated the Pensacola, Florida area, and now Dennis is looking worse. Wish me luck. Last time I was without power for 3 weeks.

Well met, hammer of Moradin, and good luck!

Aye, batten down the hatches indeed! ..for we don't want to see thy precious tomes of Realmslore flying down the streets. Gods no!

Take care, hammer. See thee soon.

Well, I know that here in Brevard County, FPL is supposed to have power restored to everyone by the 18th. And there's like 1200+ additional power crews, from all over the US, down here helping out. So when they have to roll to help y'all out, they've not got far to go. Mayhaps that will help.

Either way, good luck!

I'm trying to remember what day it is here, and I can only remember it should be Thursday. I just got power back tonight at just after 7, which makes it almost one week exactly since power went out just after midnight last Thursday/Friday when Hurricane Ivan struck.
Ivan the Terrible indeed. Power out for a week. I work at the bookstore at the local junior college which is a national guard barracks at the moment. I will not be back to work until Monday, and classes will not resume until the following Monday. Have I had time for Realmslore? No, of course not. I've been hauling downed trees out of the yard all week. I am grateful, however, that none of my family is hurt. My parents, who live in Pensacola, have six trees on their house. Bad, but not enough that they cannot live in the house until repairs can be made. My brother was renting a house by the navy base on the water and pretty much lost everything. The tidal surge went into his house. One of the reported deaths from the storm was a neighbor of his who stayed during the hurricane. Another couple survived by crawling into their attic all night.

Life slowly crawls back to normal, but if you have seen pictures of the hurricane you probably will remember a picture of the Interstate 10 bridge over Escambia Bay where whole sections are missing from it. That bridge is in the bay, but miles from the beach. It is also one of the main ways for me to get to work, or was for the time being.

There are power trucks crawling all over the place restoring power Wooley, but up here we have as many pine trees as we do fire ants, which is too many. The hurricane took care of the trees pretty good, so we have as many, if not more, tree company trucks clearing the limbs, branches, and trees off of power lines as we do bucket trucks.

Thanks to everyone who e-mailed. Now I have to catch up on the pile of paperwork that Alaundo saved for me(it truly is amazing how a hurricane can turn everything upside down, yet there is always more paperwork!).

Paperwork is paperwork, but 'tis good you are OK. Property can be fixed or replaced, but life - and getting your life in order - is the priority. Take time as you need, and if you need anything, holler. Someone's bound to have it, or know of one who does.

I'm very glad to hear that. Sorry to hear your family had damages to their homes. Some folks I know in the Pensacola area got off very easy, only damage was to the fence around their home.

Hang in there and it's nice to see you back.

I was starting to get worried about you I'm glad everything is ok. I sure hope that is the last hurricane this season there has definitely been more than enough to last for quite some time.

It's good to have you back my friend. Stay safe and well.

It's good to be back. I just want things to settle down and get back to normal around here. I must say that, for the most part, recovery was quick. Now we have to worry about Wooly with Jeanne heading for him. You just had to steal my thunder, didn't you, you big hamster!

Nah, I'm just worried about losing power again. Spending a week sweating all day long was not cool.

I've been watching this one for days... I hope you and everyone you care about make it thru this one alright!

(I also hope I don't have to do the same thing with my Hamster and the Hurricane thread)

Dennis is over, and a bit overblown. For a while it was almost a beautiful thing, watching mother nature in a bad mood. No major damage to any of mine, however if Dennis hit anywhere else in the US it would have been touted as a tragedy and catastrophe. Following Ivan last year it was little more than a destructive storm.

Wooly, I do hope everyone in Florida and elsewhere get a break from the incessant menace of hurricanes like Dennis.

I'm glad you made it thru alright.

From what I heard, Dennis was kind of a lucky break all around -- it was a small, compact storm, which limited the range of the damage, and it picked a sparsely-populated spot to come ashore.

As do I. Last year was not fun... I didn't mind the little bits of Charlie and Ivan that we saw, but catching Frances and Jeanne drew much vacuum.
