Figured I'd try another spin on my anti-undead thread.
1) Paladin (likely of Bahamut) with levels in Dragonslayer (Draconomicon) or (if they have a metallic dragon cohort) Dragonrider.
2) Barbarian with levels in Dragonslayer.
3) Ranger with levels in Dragonstalker (same sourcebook as Dragonslayer), with Dragons as their primary Favored Enemy.
4) Cleric of some good-aligned deity, likely one with the Protection domain. Spell roster replete with spells to mitigate damage, namely from a dragon's breath weapon (fire, cold, acid, electricity, etc.) and healing. Might also want to invest in Remove Fear for a dragon's Frightful Presence.
5) Rogue, possibly with levels in either Dragonstalker or Hordestealer (namely if they need to steal from the dragon beforehand). Sneak Attack might come in handy to help whittle the monster down.
6) Wizard or Sorcerer with a lot of spells meant to hinder the capabilities of Dragons (namely from the previously mentioned sourcebook) including Assay Spell Resistance (Spell Compendium).
Does that sound good?

Huh. What makes you say that spell?
Here were some I had in mind: 2nd - Earthbind - Scale Weakening 3rd - Suppress Breath Weapon 4th - Antidragon Aura - Lower Spell Resistance 5th - Contingent Energy Resistance - Vulnerability 6th - Aura of Evasion 7th - Antimagic Ray - Energy Immunity - Hide from Dragons |

For prestige classes I would recommend platinum knight and vassal of Bahamut. Both would work with cleric and paladin base classes. |

Yeah, I was thinking those in the back of my mind. |

What do you do when that hyperspecialized adventuring party encounters a giant, a vampire, a lich, or an orcish army? |

This is why Session Zero is critical. |

Do their best, I'd argue. Don't forget, these scenarios I'm asking about are for campaigns with special focus on those types of enemies/monsters in the title. |

Yes, but even accounting for the fact the players know this is a campaign where they will be facing dragons, and the characters have gathered with the goal of fighting dragons, that doesn't mean they will have to only face that. Even if the first dragons didn't have underlings, after a few kills, the other dragons in the area will become wise to this ultra-specialised dragon killing band and try to come up with adapted defences. And even without that, dragons are geopolitical forces in their own right, and any upset in the balance of forces is bound to trigger consequences: an orc tribe who was kept in check by the dragon eating its members will start growing, an evil king will be able to invade their neighbour once there is no dragon in their way, or more simply, if the party is gathering dragon hoards, thieves are going to be interested in taking it from them. If all the adventurers know how to do is kill dragons, any of these scenarios could be a problem for them. |

Athereen, your material I covered with ellipses is part and parcel of issues DMs and players hash out during Session Zero. All you said is correct. I would replace the conjunction "but" with "and make sure". |

Sounds excellent. Don't recall having such in the few play sessions I've had, but I'd love to if possible. |

My main discrepancies? 1) Spell Resistance still comes into play, which Dragons often have in spades. 2) White Dragons are immune to it. 3) In order to use it, you have to come within touching distance to land the spell (barring anything that allows you to somehow deliver it form a distance). Depending on the size and other factors of said dragon, what's to keep them from getting an attack of opportunity and turning said arcane spellcaster into a corpse on their turn? |

1. There are, like, a zillion ways to beat SR. 2. Piercing Cold + Repeat Spell/Split Ray/Twin Spell. 3. Reach Spell/spectral hand/greater spectral hand. |

To piggyback on LoB's suggestion, I would recommend arcane spellcasters in 3.5ed get the Arcane Mastery feat. That way, they can just take 10 on spell penetration checks. |
