Other than what is in Pages from the Mages and Magic of Faerun, do we know anything else about these creatures? Has Ed ever expanded upon them?

I still can’t tell if they live under the Great Glacier or are just in a Demiplane somewhere. I also wonder, when they guard a book do they just sit in their cage until their name (like Ningulfim) is spoken in the books presence? They are a mystery for sure, but an interesting one and I hope to use them in an adventure soon. Stats upcoming if anyone wants a 5e version.

They're detailed in Monstrous Compendium Annual 3, seems like they reside somewhere else and summon themselves into a cavern under the glacier when the book is attacked.
There's also Dragon Magazine 92 which details the Book and some details about where the dragon comes from and how its summoning works.

Those sources seem kinda contradictory in that Dragon 92's version doesn't summon itself and seems like there's only one scalamagdrion that exists.

There's one in the RPGA Legacy of the Green Regent Module, Book Knowledge, released in 2004, but it doesn't have much in it that didn't already appear in Magic of Faerûn.

When life turns it's back on you...sneak attack for extra damage.

I put this stat block together for 3.5e, using the MM4 and MM5 format:

Scalamagdrion CR 7
N Large dragon
Init +2 Senses Listen +14, Spot +14
Aura silence (20-ft.-radius)
Languages Draconic, Scalamagdrion
AC 19, touch 11, flat-footed 17
(-1 size, +2 Dex, +8 natural)
hp 95 (10 HD)
Immune cold, fire
Fort +10, Ref +9, Will +8; spell turning
Speed 15 ft. (3 squares), fly 40 ft. (poor)
Melee bite +13 (2d6 +4) and
2 claws +11 (1d8+2) and
2 wings +11 (1d6+2)
Space 10 ft.; Reach 5 ft.
Base Atk +10; Grp +18
Atk Options rend 2d6+6
Abilities Str 19, Dex 14, Con 16, Int 9, Wis 12, Cha 9
Cleave, Combat Reflexes, Multiattack, Power Attack
Skills Climb +17, Knowledge (arcana) +12, Listen +14 Move Silently +15, Spot +14
Rend (Ex) If a scalamagdrion hits with both claw attacks, it latches onto the opponent’s body and tears the flesh. This attack automatically deals an additional 2d6+6 damage.
Silence (Su) This ability continuously duplicates the effects of the spell of the same name, centered on the scalamagdrion. The scalamagdrion can suppress this ability if desired. Caster level equals the scalamagdrion’s HD.
Spell Turning (Su) This ability continuously duplicates the effects of the spell of the same name with the scalamagdrion as the target. Unlike the spell, the scalamagdrion’s spell turning ability has an unlimited ability to turn spells (the spell turning is never exhausted).

Oh awesome info everyone thank you. And love the stat block because it’ll be simple to convert to 5e.
