What would be awesome would be if someone carefully digitized the map and made it available online. I'd pay for a copy of that! |

Well I knew the map, but not the story. I always wanted to see what's under the great glacier's taping-over. Looks like we aren't seeing that for a while, with how the map is sealed up. |

"The map truly is a magic item, one with the power to open the way into another world."
It is indeed a magical item. It is a map of the Realms. Which updates itself to reflect changes in terrain, places, and names. If one studies the map intently, long enough to learn names of places inscribed therein, a gate is opened to one of those places. The map then vanishes and reappears in some random place on a random world, sometimes in a tavern or other public place, sometimes hidden away among other treasures in a secret place. The gate to a place in the Realms remains open indefinitely, it cannot be closed until one travels through it or destroys the map. Be warned that mysterious benefactors have placed powerful magics on the map to scry its location and to make it surprisingly resistant to damage. The magical map can be sold to a collector for 5,000 gold pieces. |

5000 seems cheap for a door to anywhere. |

I agree. 5000 seems too cheap. Even if it were a single-use item. Even if dangerous people/creatures/things in the Realms might use the open gate to visit the map reader's location.
But according to the article, 5000 has always been the going price. |

I'd make it so that once someone went through, the portal was only open for one round, and that it also would put the terminus -- at best -- within a one-mile radius of the point on the map. Maybe even a five-mile radius. So no assassins mapping into someone's bedchamber -- at least, not the one they're targeting. |

I have a copy of Ed's hand drawn map of the lands north of Impiltur before the addition of the Bloodstone Lands. It's just glacier, although Eds map describes it as the "Great Ice Desert".

A map of that age (and cultural importance!) in a nest of inebriation? Two feet of bulletproof glass, at the minimum. |
Stand with anybody that stands right. Stand with him while he is right and part with him when he goes wrong.
Earth names in the Realms are more common than you may think. |

Not sure where to put this, didn't want to open a new topic for it;
Ed was on Lord Gosumba's Twitch channel last night (Nov 18) discussing maps and he brought a bunch of his own originals – including for the first time his map of the original Moonshaes (VOD HERE, Moonshaes about ~50min. in). I managed a few screenshots:

It was a good show, Ed had a lot of interesting tangents. The Great Glacier may remain unknown, but now we finally have the Moonshaes un-taped! (also, someone on Twitter should @theedverse and ask him if he's willing to put up a better copy than these screengrabs)

The Moonshae map was far from the only interesting one he showed. Thanks for the recommendation! |
