Good morning.

While researching the more esoteric dragons (i.e., any dragon that isn't Chromatic or Metallic) for an unexpected subterranean adversary, I came across the Deep Dragon. Below are some relevant excerpts from their Monstrous Manual entry.

quote:
Deep dragons are little known on the surface world. They are the hunters of the Underdark. Cunning and patient, they place their survival, followed by their joy of hunting, above all else.

quote:
A deep dragon can alter its features to resemble any humanoid of roughly human size. It is 66% likely to copy a specific being well enough to be mistaken for the actual creature.

quote:
Deep dragons roam the Underdark and are great explorers.

quote:
Deep dragons often work with drow.

quote:
They view cloakers and mind flayers as dangerous rivals in the Underdark.

Both the Deep Dragons and the Drow are Chaotic Evil as a rule. I wonder if such alliances are frequently attempted yet always erratic at best. Would a dragon that is able to shapeshift show their hand (i.e., their true form) to inveterate cutthroats? However, because the Illithids ARE utterly alien in their motivations, their designs for any dragon are likely thoroughly abominable; I could see their encroachment or even simple interest as the impetus for the forging of an alliance with the dark elves.

Then again, maybe the Deep Dragons "work with" the Drow in order to obtain treasure...but that seems like grand risk for comparatively little reward. What do you think?

Stand with anybody that stands right. Stand with him while he is right and part with him when he goes wrong.

Earth names in the Realms are more common than you may think.

I tried to answer some of these questions here:

Also, read the write-up of Nurvureem from Dragon magazine: https://www.realmshelps.net/npc/wyrms/nurvureem.shtml

I would imagine that a lot of the "cooperation" between the two is the deep dragons, posing as drow or other races, using or taking advantage of the drow, without the latter ever knowing the truth.

Z'pora (spelling?) came across as very personable for a dragon. She would be the dragon I would ally with if I had to deal with aboleths and kuo-toa from a position of undebatable power.
