Hello my friends.I just want to know if you lost any characters and why?Was it for something you care much more than your character,or because of an arrow you did not expect? Was the destiny yours to choose,or the DMs?

If you were a dream,I would sleep forever...

Having been more often a DM then sitting in a player's position, I have never really 'lost' a character. (two were almoist sacrificed, but they didn't die...)

However I had characters in my Realms campaigns die, and the current players in Twilight Dawn and Silver Marches run the same risk. Especially if they foolishly run into danger, completely (uncharacteristically)unprepared I can be - ahum - harsh on players. Not that I set out to kill them, but I'm less likely to 'fudge' the dice rolls in their favour...

Dude I've had LOADS of Characters killed.

I must have lost well over 30 in my time.

The bunch of people I play with are really good mates but we are all very eccentric and kill each other off all the time. Also, our current DM loves watching us die so everything he can think of that may kill us he uses.

In our last game of D&D three (out of five) of us were dead after just 3 hours of playing!!! I killed one myself!!!

We are always Chaotic evil in our games so it kinda fits. We have no consideration for each other.

Alex, a bad-ass faery, got hold of a repeater crossbow that was bigger than him and fired randomly into combat between Fred (another player, an Archer) and two drow soldiers. He did twice as much damage to Fred than to the enemy!!!

Then a few minutes later we were walking along when some Green Ooze droped on my (a thief with a serious personality disorder, ie Charisma 3, Chaotic Evil, Drow and Wrapped in a black cloak. Couldn't have been much more unpopular if I had had 'You are a twat' tatooed on my forehead!) head. As you know, Green Ooze is seceptable to fire so I got our mage to fry me with Agnazars {sp??} Scorcher. However, in my desperation to get the ooze off I *accidentaly* threw my sword at him which I had recently glazed with poison. It did him 30 damage

He, less accidently, picked it up and stabbed me with it. He rolled a natural 20 to hit and then a natural 8 damage - ouch - which took my HP below zero. Luckily, our Cleric decided to help me out.

Then, a bit later on, when we were fighting a spider, Fred was firing his long-bow and roled a straight 1 meaning the arrow thudded into Alex. We were having such crappy roles that Jack (our Cleric) decided to aim at Alex in the theory that he would miss and hit the spider. Surprise, surprise it was a critical hit. We killed the spider and Alex ran, well flew, out to prepare an ambush for Jack in revenge. Jack, sensing the danger, brought his mace thudding down on Ben (our mage). Ben made a stab at him and missed. I used the opertunity to show of and somersaulted backwards holding two dagger driving them both into him and reduccing him to 1/3 HP with a smooth critical.

Fred ran over to Alex, our elected leader, with the priceless phase "They've already started, MiLord!"

Jack ran out of the room into 'The Zone' (Alex's ambush zone) and was met with a Faery Barbarian speeding towards him brandishing a nasty toothpick. He tried to cast a spell but a well placed arrow from Fred sent him to an early grave. (DEATH NUMBER ONE)

Alex, not content with this, sent himself flying at Ben who blasted a the whole area with a Fire Ball doing us all serious damage. Alex and Fred attacked him while I went to loot Jack's dead body.

Ben, lying on the floor injured, tryed to grab the swearing faery and snap him in half. He got a good grip but failed to summon the stength to snap him. Fred came bursting in sword above his head aiming a deadly blow at Ben. He rolled a 2 and sliced Alex cleanly in half as Ben held him aloft (DEATH NUMBER TWO)

I, having just picked up a mace from the dead body of jack. I walked perfectly calmly towards the fighting mage as he used his burning hands spell to do yet more damage to Fred. Very calmly I walked up to him and equally calmly I smashed it down on his head killing him instantly. (DEATH NUMBER THREE).

Then, just to deny the DM the pleasure of a final showdown, me and Fred shook hands and began to loot the bodies in peace and harmony....

Honestly I have never had occasion to kill a character and none of mine have ever been killed. However I was mostly in a one on one environment and didn't have a party to contend with back then, If my character died then the story was over.

Now, 15 years later, I am dming almost all the time and I see no good reason to kill a character. AD&D is about having a good time, noone wants to see a character they have poured hours of time into killed.

I take it back once someone did something very foolish and was killed by a death magic spell. But I let an NPC raise him.

But that's just me.

I did enjoy it. Great story! thanks.

As for killing or being killed... I surely wouldn't want my PC killed, but the possibility he might makes the game more exiting and fun.

Man, you should have posted your story in my topic!

But back to this topic, yes, I have had loads die!
The best on that comes to mind was this one time my group and I we're exploring the forest and we came across a cave, and the ranger in our party said it belonged to bears, and warned is not to go into the cave or mess around it, but did we listen, noooo, we went in, he stayed out, and he climed over the mouth of the cave and yells "Anybody home!?" into it while we were stealthily(trying) to make our way to the back of the cave to investigate, and a bunch of Cave Bears came out and......well, let's just say he was the only one to survive......but I got Reincarnated...into a female dwarf....and originally, I was a Male Drow, so needless to say I was unhappy!

i had a paladin of torm once and he got killed in a desperate fight
against a red wyrm...the dragon was responable of an attack to a little village and also he was the main evil boss of the campaign...
so we went to its lair(a paladin of torm ,a cleric of lathander,a barbarian from the north and a brave knight).
Red scum said that he had to kill us because we were annoying him.
he said that if we pledge loyalty to him and beg for our lives he would not kill us but instead he will let us work for him...what an insult for a warrior of light!!i screamed a prayer to torm "to watch me and preserve me" and swing my blessed bastard sword to his huge leg...ý coldnt do much damage but i managed to severe a tendril, then barbarian scored a ciritical hit just before red scum used his breath weapon to fry all of us...
still i hate red dragons...

Was that enough to kill it, two mere hits?

I like red dragons, they are more intelligent than most paladins.

No reddie killed all of us with his breath weapon ...
And dear friend yes red scums can be more intelligent than paladins
but paladins are smarter...and know the difference between intelligence and being smart;reddies can be intelligent than paladins.
but warriors of light can always find a smart way to kill that big red scums.intelligence brings pride and pride is your first enemy eh?
any being with more pride than reddies...?
and also if you are intelligent you can learn to use weapons but
if you are smart you create weapons to strike against red scums.
Could i explain the difference between a reddie and a paladin?
thanx...

I do not think that intelligence makes proud. Power does. And paladins can be proud as well.

Hey Saber I remember that game quite clearly. I was a cleric of Mystra not Lathander.
My characters do not die often but I remember that we had a mixed(Chaotic evil-Lawful good was included within the party)party once living in a city of dust and smoke. We were sent to scums section of the city to kill some elf. And my friend sabre killed our bard who have been singing in the moment to help us. Saying it was a fifty fifty chance that he would have killed the enemy. I believe Baki really felt Sabre's handaxe in his back.

"I can see what would befall me as I see what would befall you!" said a sorcerer just before I slitted his throat, you should have seen the astonishment on his face. It was pretty amusing.

intelligence brings power, being powerful brings pride
so the essence is intelligence...
paladins ,champions of good are proud 'cause not that thay have power
but they have valor, courage and a sense of protecting and preserving the weak...on the other hand reddies are just powerful and just-kill-it minded obsessives...This does not make them charismatic or powerful
but just evil pathetic losers...there is a saying goes in my clan that
if you see a village fully in the view you don't need a guide to find it...

Hmmm, I cannot recall I have ever lost a character... I wonder... why...
It is not that we never have done anything dangerous... or that we were never close... but they all still live.

*is thinking... wondering...*

I've been in campaigns were other Pc's die. But oddly enough, I naver have. I think its because everyone always considers me the star (if you will) of the group, if not the leader. And the DM's might have something to do with it too.

I lost one of my favourite player in a very stupid way.
She was called Liliana, she was a rogue level 3.
I made her afraid of spiders just for fun, she also couldn't bear orders. She was with a cleric of Mystra, Halalor, who was very rigid (and it was not role play unfortunately)
So when, in a dungeon, there were 3 ways and Halalor said we separate and when we reach an other choice, we came back and wait for the other. So when i reach a point where i had the choice again between right and left, i continued. After a few feet i realised that i entered in a spider lair. When i wanted to go back i founfd that there was a spider's ... (a white thing that they make!) which was blocking the way back. I screamed, but by the time he found me, i was dead...
