In preparation for running the 5e adventure Lost Laboratory of Kwalish I have taken some time to consider its proper placement and I thought I'd share my conclusions.
The adventure itself provides no less than five possible locations in the realms: In Chult (the Mistcliffs or the Kobold Mtns.), Halruaa, or The Sword Coast (the Gray Peeks or the Nether Mountains).
I have chosen a different location based upon the following information presented in the adventure.
The start of the adventure consists of seeking out the Cartophile, a gnome named Anaxi Zephries. The name of the gnome is interesting to me. Anaxi is short for Anaximander which is the name of a historical philosopher who lived in Ionia, which is modern-day Turkey. I have decided that the closest realms analogue would be Semphar. Therefore, I want the Cartophile to have been born in Semphar. It is likely that after his adolescence he set off on an expedition of exploration and cartography. The Raurin desert and areas south would have been a good candidate for such an endeavor. Durpar would be a logical residence for the Cartophile as it is a vast trading nation with easy access to sailing ships.
The adventure revolves around the titular Kwalish, an extraordinary inventor who could be classified as an artificer. He has crafted several legendary magical items. Keeping Semphar and Durpar in mind, the mostly likely source for his knowledge would be from ancient Imaskari, in the area around the Raurin desert. He may have been a survivor himself from that time or he may have uncovered secrets left behind by the Imaskari.
He is described as living in the lost city of Daoine Gloine. This is an Irish word. The closest realms analogue would be the ffolk. The ffolk colonized the Utter East so it is likely that the city could have been built by them or, more likely, renamed by them when they discovered it.
Part of the adventure takes place within a "crashed craft." The mostly likely explanation is that this craft was from "The Dock" in the Yehimal mountains. From The Dock, the craft could have traveled southwest towards the Utter East and crashed there.
Finally, the location itself both in the modern and the 1st edition adventures is named The Great Barrier Peaks. This is very similar to the Wi Pi Te Shao, also known as the Peerless Mountains. This could easily have earned the nickname The Peerless Peaks.
In conclusion, I have decided to start the adventure in the nation of Durpar where the Cartophile is based. From there, the party must sail south to the Utter East kingdom of Konigheim and continue on land towards the mountains. They must then pass by the hidden Goblin city of Nix on the Forbidden Plateau before reaching their destination of Daoine Gloine.

You didn't pick the famous center of industry that is Chult? You appear to be... sane. Unlike. A-and they merged it with the Barrier Peaks, too.

See Barrier Peaks. Also, there was an adventure spoof in Nodwick. |

it sounds like a good start,
Durpar is criminally underused. :) |

the best part, you're not likely to be "overwritten", since they'll never go there. I hadn't heard of this adventure, and I have to ask, is it worth the money? By the way, have the released the official Eberron print edition yet? I did like that campaign setting, despite never using it, and I'd be intrigued to see what they do with the artificer ( I know they have something already released which I haven't looked at). |

I have the digital version on D&D Beyond and I've ordered the print on demand version. It was part of the 2017 Extra Life charity so part of the money goes to charity. The adventure itself is basically a dungeon crawl with a few interesting NPCs. It's a bit of nostalgia for those of us that started with the AD&D S1 series modules.
Interestingly, the Emerald Enclave is mentioned in the background of Ctenmiir. I don't think there's any other specific references but I haven't run through it yet. |
