Aldessra Oln Petite, plain-looking. An always-alert woman of icy calm and calculation. Can cozen and charm with the best festhall girls. Selling shares in "an extended voyage of exploration" to sail north "beyond the Endless Ice to the habitations of the gods and the idylls of the celestials." Half a dozen ships, risk unknown. Boasts of a full complement of workers-of-Art "skilled in traditions both fulgent and refulgent." Interested investors are advised to seek Aldessra at her lodgings at The Lord's Respite (Street of Silks, Castle Ward).
Aldyn Seller of snails. Fills his baskets at the Waymoot each morning and walks to Trades Ward, peddling his wares to laborers and goodwives. His sales cry is an instantly-recognizable series of impressive barks and cackles which he claims are derived from the language of the dog-men of Amn, allegedly great lovers of snails (he will, if allowed, go on in great detail about the kobolds of the southern lands, almost all of which is flummery created whole cloth in his head). His baskets, which hang by chains from a green-painted yoke over his shoulders, contain a collection of very large snails, all freshly boiled, with each shell being closed by a seal of creamy yellow butter, heavily sprinkled with parsley (one copper a handfull).
Aleena Elvenblood (LG ½EF F) A civilar (captain) of the Griffon Guard (North Wing). Descended from an ancient Ardeep moon elven clan (House Hlallaranth [H'LOL-a-RANTH] Banners-of-Burnished-Leaves). Wiry build, rough highly-freckled skin. Greenish-grey eyes, broken nose, shoulder-length auburn hair. Rides the griffon named Black Tantrum.
Algedusk Arcrimmor (al-jay-DUSK arr-CRIMOAR ['crimoar' rhyming with 'nimoar']) Master (captain) of the Wave Azer (azer being Tharsan dialect for azure; sail-sigil is a line of three heavy swells to the dexter, crowned with two golden anchors – one slanted down to the south-west, the other down to the south-east). Short, broad-chested, bowlegged. Scarred and blustering. Lost an arm to the golden savages of Naraman (su-monsters / a trio of verdant isles to the west of Nimbral). Lost four front teeth to the Velenese Watch, but he doesn't complain about that nearly as much. The Azer currently hires out to concerns seeking trade voyages to the New Lands of Maztica, and has actually survived two such trips so far.
Ali ibn-Dakimh (LG HM Enc7) A native of Calimshan. Fled in exile to Cormyr and to the War Wizards. He currently poses as an adjutant to Thrombur, the Cormyrean envoy (ambassador) to Waterdeep and the North, a cover for his true mission as the eyes and ears of the court wizard, Vangerdahast. Favors robes of a deep blue hue, and is more commonly known as "Southern Aleric" or "Blue Aleric" (Aleric being the northern translation of his Calishite name). He worships Anachtyr, Azuth, and Mystra. [ Source: "The Reports From Undermountain," Steven Schend, Dragon Magazine #227, p.16. Name/Description/Stats given. Additional detail by me. ]

Gaeban Redharpin (CG #189;EM F11/W6) Former leader of the Knights Errant adventurers, now retired. Lord of Huntleign Barony in the Moonshaes, and a Knight of the Realm. His slender, wiry frame is just beginning to show the signs of his new sedentary lifestyle (especially around his waist), but he still moves with the fluid grace of a deadly swordsman. His boyish, disarming face belies his age, but it is now set off by a nose that has been broken more than once over his long adventuring career. His eyes are hazel and almond-shaped, the most obvious sign of his elvish blood. For many years Gaeban dyed his hair jet-black using cantrips, but he has since let it go back to its original reddish-copper color. He has also recently begun growing a moustache and well-trimmed beard in the fashion of the Moonshaen nobility. One of the original members of the famed Knights Errant adventuring company, though it was many years before he actually became leader of the fellowship. Under his leadership the Knights spent much time in the Moonshaes, and their exploits lead to King Tristan crowning them Knights of the Realm. After the deaths of his cohort Zanthus and his lover Dichara, Gaeban left the Knights and retired from adventuring. He returned to the Moonshaes and was soon granted a title and a barony by Queen Alicia, Tristan's daughter. He now lives in Redharpin Manor with his wife Uthelren (a towering, flame-haired daughter of a Northman chieftan), their three daughters (Aleena, Gwenalyne and Alustrae), and a number of pureblooded Moonshaen staghounds. He is close with the Queen, and will act as an unofficial advisor and envoy when the need arises. During Gaeban's adventuring career the one thing that often stood between himself and certain death was Elanvalae, a plain and battered longsword of minor enchantment. His longbow +2 is now in the hands of Lheslaynn (CG HF Ra2), a promising young ranger and his daughter by the deceased Waterdhavian watchcaptain Dichara Stormheart. Aside from a number of miscellaneous rings, potions, and spell scrolls, his only other magical item of note was a frost-blue luckstone that was lost from around his neck during a battle with sahuagin raiders (the same battle that gained him a deep scar along the left side of his neck and collarbone) and is now presumed to lie in the depths of the Sea of Moonshae.
Gaince "Easy Gains" Broon Former Ward Civilar of Dock Ward (1363 - 1365DR). His tenure as Ward Civilar became infamous for widespread corruption and protection rackets. Brought to trial by the black-robes. Sentenced to the Undermountain.
Galan Glengerald Eccentric entrepreneur. Tried to turn Gilded Apples (exactly what they sound like) into a status symbol for the noble and highcoin circles, claiming that possession of such an item was how the ancient elven realms of the North decided their kingships. His venture found little purchase among his target audiences and he was found dead in his chambers, 1361DR, hog-tied with a gilded apple stuffed into his mouth. The inevitable result, it is said, of money owed to one crimelord or another (the elf one, some whisper). Amusingly enough, after his death his creation did gain some measure of popularity among young and jaded nobles at their feasts. This fad ended quite abruptly in late 1363DR, after Ruldaer Thongolier attempted to shoot a gilded apple off of the head of Emerinthé Roaringhorn, with tragic results.
Galdelf Mluredar Priest of Lathander. Using the pen-name Melflas, wrote a number of well-known "religious romances" (lurid chapbooks with titles such as Priests in Passion, Vestments of Fire, Altar Blessings, The Dawnlord's Desire, and The Priestess and the Patrician, that were all the rage in the early 1350s). Died of a coughing illness in the winter of 1359DR.
Galfaera the Golden Wrote the memoir Things I Shouldn't Say (1368DR). "Think about the things you want to accomplish in life; odds are, they're all easier attained with the judicious application of a sharp blade."

MISC'LLANEA (That's a fancy name for 'random nonsense') May or may not have anything to do with Waterdeep or NPCs. Probably don't.
==================================================
Myrkul's Spit An incandescent crimson sauce made from the ground root of the Abyssal gleecra plant; a lower-planar delicacy known to only a handful of educated adventurers and mages and the most high-coin of gourmands; any more than a thimbleful can cause grevious harm to ingesters, as the mage Thulbass found out as his stomach – and other lower organs – erupted in unstaunchable bleeding ulcers; certain dragons are known to be quite intrigued by the stuff, although they, too, can only bear so much – but observing someone enjoying more than a usual amount of gleecra-sauce is a great way to suss out dragons in shapechanged form (or disguised devil or demon – beware!); A small amount of Myrkul's Spit is also an acceptable substitute material component for a cloudkill spell.
Yellow Thaum (Sune's Sunny Sorrow) Thaumur was favored of Sune, and as so he always ran along the sunny side of the hedge-row and the wooded eaves and the village lanes, until one day he was tricked by the deceitful drow elves to run along the dark side of a hedge widdershins, and so he was never seen again thereafter. And Sune wept for his loss and her tears fell upon the sunny side of the hedge and sparkled there in the sun, and that is why to this very day the Yellow Thaum grows under hedge and shrub but only blooms on the sun-ward facing side. The honeyed nectar of the tear-shaped flowers brews a sweet mead that is highly prized among the gnomes and Hin.
Rosemilk A "wizard-weed" (a plant altered for specific sorcerous purposes). Prefers temperate, sunny, well-drained soils. Forms pale purplish flowers in dense cylindrical spikes which can produce a nectar that tastes as roses smell and can be tinctured (alongside common wine or clear spirits and powdered cedar-apple rust) into a healing draught (1d2 HP of any non-magical damage once per 24-hr period), that is also commonly said to give hair volume and richness, and to promote general good health.

Athammus Master of Broadbrick House (The Free Foundling's Home), one of the city orphanages funded by the Lords. Broad-faced, red-bearded, wide-shouldered, pleasant-looking. Soft-spoken, sings in a moderately impressive baritone. The aim of the House (located on Drover's Street north of Sahtyra's Lane, Castle Ward) is to keep foundlings fed and clothed long enough until they can be passed off to a guildsman or to the Goldenfields for apprenticing or (for the older children) taken in and trained by the Guard. Priests of those faiths who don't have established orphanages in the city also come by from time to time, sent by a vision to retrieve a child for their flock.
Athlannan Yultune (N HM Illu12) A senior member of the Watchful Order (holds the office of Accomplished Master of Illusionry). Tall and thin with large, almost elf-like eyes the color of midnight. He sports long silver hair bound back in an ornate braid and a tiny wisp of a moustache, and is a noted patron of the arts, especially the theatre. He carries several wands of an offensive nature up his sleeves at all times, for those who are not impressed by his delusory arts. A confidant and long-time companion (and rumored lover) of the bard Ammathan Var.
Athosar the Old (LG HM Exp5/P5 of Lathander) Prior of the Inner Chapel. Elderly and in failing health, although still sharp of both memory and wit. Athosar has held the same position under the two previous high priests of the Lathanderite temple. Widely regarded as knowledgeable, diplomatic, and a dangerous political enemy of anyone opposed to the temple. [ Source: City of Splendors - Who's Who In Waterdeep, p.62. Name given. Additional detail by me. ]
Aubraera Glynn (LN water genasiF P8 of Umberlee) Aubraera is the Wavechantress Most High of the rising Deepspires, cathedral of Umberlee. She has very light, almost colorless skin that reveals a webwork of vibrant azure veins underneath. Wide black eyes, prominent lips, and long, straight blue-black hair that seems continually damp and shining. Her normal speech is often difficult to understand, sounding somewhat slurred, although she has a crystal-clear, enchanting singing voice. It is her duty to lead her fellow Wavechanters (a sect of the Umberlant temple) in hymn and song every day, praising Unfathomed Umberlee for her dominance of the waters, and to sing of that day when the stars are under the sea.
The Augurates of Savras Arcana, Fate, Knowledge, Law, Spells. The five appointed patriarchs of the church of Savras. Each oversees a separate dominion of the Lord of Divination. The best known of The Five are Aulthoon of Neverwinter, the Augurate of Arcana, and Tsonjhus Aoon [SAUN-Juss Ay-YOON] of Durpar, the Augurate of Fate.

Markos Thaunharp A noted Chondathan harpist and adventurer. Famed for escaping the infernal clutches of the Hades Hounds of the Dolordelve. The prize he gained that day, the spell-slept Netherese princess Baelardhra of the Bountiful Bells, later became his wife and mother of his three sons Ruvheld, Torghus, and Gost. His treasures, accumulated favors and the proceeds of a rather popular chapbook based on his adventures were all spent in a futile effort to cure the wasting disease that eventually claimed Baelardhra's life in the winter of 1359DR. He gave his last remaining possessions – his sword, shield and enchanted cloak – to his sons and rode south to the Tashlutan gates of the House of Night's Embrace, temple of the goddess Talona, whom he believed came to claim a long-overdue life-debt on his wife. His fate after that is not recorded.
Ruvheld Thaunharp Eldest son of the noted Chondathan harpist and adventurer, Markos Thaunharp. Brother of Torghus and Gost. A member of the Tyrran Order of the Lawful Hammer. Grey-streaked black hair, dark eyes and beard. Cut off his right hand in ritual mutilation. Self-confident, decisive, willful. Confrontational and irritable if his advice or commands are not heeded. Bears The Ardsword (a sword +1, flametongue), his father's weapon of choice.
Torghus Thaunharp Middle son of the noted Chondathan harpist and adventurer, Markos Thaunharp. Brother of Ruvheld and Gost. A paladin of the Tyrran Order of the Lawful Hammer. Tall, dark-eyed, clean-shaven. Compassionate and emotional, but tends to frame all arguments and decisions in the context of Law and Chaos. Carries his father's shield, Behiraust (a shield +3, grants protection from evil 20' radius 1x/day; emblazoned with the Thaunharp crest, a white harp on a green field, with six point-upright arrows replacing the harpstrings).
Gost Thaunharp Youngest son of the noted Chondathan harpist and adventurer, Markos Thaunharp. Brother of Ruvheld and Torghus. Follows the goddess Tymora, unlike his Tyrran brothers. Fair skin and hair, dancing green eyes. Smaller than his brothers. Quick-witted, eager, brave to the point of foolishness. Wears The Smouldering Hades Cloak (a hooded cloak +2; fire shield, either version 2x/day; smoky, acrid fog cloud 1x/day), fashioned by his mother from the pelts of the infernal Hades Hounds of the Dolordelve.

MISC'LLANEA May or may not have anything to do with Waterdeep or NPCs. Probably don't. (yes, this is what I spend my free time on; don't judge )
==================================================
"The Moor-men are gathered for the fight / When the furze-flames burn all through the night" -Common saying among the settled folk of the lands north and west of the High Moor, brought to larger audiences through Nathuum [Nah-THOOM]'s 1325DR travelogue, Expeditions Into the Evermoors and Gaverstaff's 1329DR play "The Last Three Daybreaks of Larruskeep" (specifically Act II, "Dawn O'er the Southern Battlements")
"Clear and cold the moon shone O'er many a heap of lifeless flesh and bone Now just a lonely field Now only desolation yield Where once the flower of Man was sown All goodliness hath long since flown" - "The Battle of Flamerule Nine-and-Ten" Aumereene of Waterdeep, 1334DR
Down Amidst "Down amidst the tranquil deeps Where sea-maids and selkie play There the goddess her watery court keeps And you'll hear Dread Umberlee say
"Come to me sailor, come to me tar Down where the sea-maids and selkies are Down where the chanties ring Down where the lash ne'er sting And down where delights lie fit for a king"
But of her words you must not shere To any man or maid you meet ashore For then they all might come to hear and down amid the tranquil deeps Disappear"
When Umberlee Came to Queldore With a curl of Her finger And a cup of Her hand Her thundrous Wrath came to the Land She came, She took, She did not linger
For Umberlee had come to Poor Queldore
And no more, no more Upon that shore Was e'er heard of Lost Queldore
And now, and now, so far from shore (Forty fathoms, 'tis said, or more) Doth rest the ruins of Drownt Queldore
The Sisters of Light and Dark "Selûne in her house of honor, Shar in her garden awry One shining white and wondrous, a work so true in the sky And one wrapt in darksome murk, where troubles and treasons lie" The Quabbarith Lorala [Kä-Bar-RETH Lore-ALA], book of holy poetry -Narmeshkur of Iliphanar, 1175DR (from which comes the common phrases "in [their] garden awry" (an expression for one suffering from sadness or depression), and "[thereby/that way leads] where troubles and treasons lie," often used to refer to actions of roguery and ill-plotting; as well as in terms critical of the local authorities)

Pfft. As if anyone would ever waste five good NPCs on the Crusader class
Of course, there is always "Those Who Dream of the Knife" (a quintet of former Bhaal cultists turned to [turned on by] Talona's "pain is pleasure" mantra, who specialize in horridly ornate [but undeniably artistic] mutilations and ostentatious blade-killings [in addition to the whole 'poisons and plagues' thing]; led by the disgraced Elturelian noble Dauskethrel "The Ill That Abounds") and The Leth-Lads (five devotees of the infamous Talonar Hauldron Lethur, raised by him from foundlings orphaned by his diseased devotions along the Sword Coast caravan routes; it should be noted that three of the 'Lads' – Yasthandra, Mierra [MEE-Ra] and Dulskarra – are actually Lasses).
And the shadow wyrmling Umbertongue, who has in their thrall five were-vorr which range out from their lair under the Greypeaks in the waning days of plagues and epidemics, down the Delimbyr vale, seeding a second wave of infections and hounding those of other faiths who would thwart the will of the Mistress of Many Sufferings (the chromatic fever of 1351DR remains a particularly favorite triumph).
EDIT: Upon further consideration, I think "Those Who Dream of the Knife" should be for either Bhaal (still) or converted to the worship of Loviatar. Call this group instead The Hand Envenomed (The Society of Syrup and Sting), a group of wastrel nobles, led by the disgraced Elturelian noble Dauskethrel "The Ill That Abounds," who enjoy inflicting poisonings and plagues upon the poorer citizens of Elturel, and seek ways to breed a loyal force of were-rat servitors (not that they would ever consider becoming such "disgusting creatures" themselves).

All seems reasonable! Really like the were-vorrs who amp up the waning days of an epidemic. And Umbertongue is a great name, although would like to know the "real" name too. |

Vaerghul the Comforter (NE HM P of Shar) Old, wizened man. Leans heavily on a dark length of ironwood to walk, but is capable of surprising displays of strength and temperment when challenged. An Assuager of Shar (present at all funerals and times of sorrow. Soothes and comforts the grief-stricken. Said to whisper the words of the Lady of Loss and – more darkly – to feed on the turbulent emotions of the bereaved like a vampire on blood). One of the few clergy of the Dark Maiden to openly walk the halls of the Palace. Was present at the funerals of Zelphar and Lhestyn Arunsun, and at the mourning when Piergeiron's father fell to the red wyrm Kistarianth.
Vaerlith Master of the Doors at the House of Wonder. Stout, middle-aged, fair hair and blue-grey eyes. Well known for his frequent useage of the oath (whether in frustration, amazement or appreciation), "By Mystra's Seven Secret Spells!"
Valadorn Moonstar A noble of House Moonstar [b.980/d.1062]. Half-elf. Third child of Lunaven "Moonstar" and Yhauldyth. Joined the newly-established Naval Guard in 998DR, retired from active duty in 1011DR. Achieved success in merchant shipping (widely credited as the founder of the Moonstar merchant fortunes). Married Sharthaea Mornglum [b.992/d.1057] in 1009DR. Two children – Mhaestar and Lunaeveene.
Valandro A blackrobe (magister) and Palace mage of Waterdeep (served under both Lhestyn and Piergeiron), whose name now graces Valandro's Study, a small, quiet parlor deep in Piergeiron's Palace. The only furnishings in the room are two well-upholstered chairs, a carved rosewood desk, and an open guestbook and inkwell sitting upon it. The book is a magnificent tome edged in ornaments of the purest gold leaf, with leaves of purple vellum. A guard is stationed here at all times to keep passerby from inscribing their names in the ledger or otherwise disturbing the pristine pages. The reason for this is any such contact with the book counts as expending a charge from a wand of wonder (a wild magic oddity that only began erupting after the events of the Time of Troubles). Why Palace officials keep such a dangerous item out on display is that the tome is actually the key to a portal, centered on the room itself, which leads to the fortified "emergency" vaults located deep within Mount Waterdeep, something only senior Palace officials and the Lords themselves know (scribing Valandro's sigil on the blank vellum is the trigger, and the only such contact that does not end in wild magic surge).
Varadhia Half-elven sword-she. Cropped red hair, sullen blue eyes. Wielded shortsword, dagger and thrown darts. Was employed in the High Road War as the personal guard of the Master Stoneworker Buirholdan Skordar. She was slain by the assassin Jarek Mercyblood shortly before the guildhall barricades were stormed by the forces of the Carpenters and Roofers guild.

Halberdant Thunderstaff (N HM Aris3/F2) An elderly noble of House Thunderstaff. The "High Helm" (chairman emeritus) of the Farwanderers Society. Known in his younger days as "Thundering Hal," captain of the Lances of Long Death, a mounted mercenary company. Halberdant has spent his waning days (and great amounts of the Thunderstaff coffers) importing his favorite sweets and liquors from the lands around the southern Inner Sea.
"Halfling" Marn Named for his short stature. Some believe him to be an actual Hin, attempting to pass as human (for what reason, no one can say). Carries the golden filigree chain known as Eleburr's Elegant Denial (1x/day when wrapped around a lock, latch or handle, secures the opening as a hold portal spell. It can also "float in midair" upon command when released by a hand, and so can be used to hang things in mid-air; nothing heavier than a lantern or a broadsword, though).
Halvas "Halfhand" (CN HaM T6) A member of the Shields of Snail Street adventuring fellowship. A rather tall, thin, brawling bravo with a love of swordplay, plentiful wine and good practical jokes (even those played on him). Dreams of seeing the halfling lands of yore (such as the Hin princedom of Phalorm or the southern realm of Meiritin) arise again. Wields Swiftsting, an enchanted shortsword of quickness +2 that once belonged to the Hin adventurer Fletcher Lynklyn and to the watch officer Ylarell.
Hambro Blackweave A senior member of the Watchful Order (holds the office of Accomplished Master of Conjurations). Lean and rat-faced, bright-eyed. Lost a leg to a summoned devil that broke free of its' confining circle. Garrulous and affable in nature which, along with his habit of buying mead and wine for his fellow Ordermen, accounts for his position more than any superior magical acumen. Constantly dreams of summoning and questioning denizens of the Upper and Lower Planes, but lacks the nerve to do so after his maiming.
Hammadan Hornshelm (LN HM F4) An Entever (captain) of the Sacred Swords (the religious order tasked with defending the doors of the House of Heroes). A former mercenary and gladiator in the Blood Pits of Manshaka. Broad-shouldered and ill-tempered. Proficient with the long sword and long spear.

Ansul Thalavren The Laughing Lord of the Stagshaws, the rocky, ruinous country northwest of Llorkh. An occasional ally of Waterdeep and the Lord's Alliance, who use the bandit-lord's forces (paid well in gold) to offset the Zhentarim domination of the backland trade routes.
Arlusk the Cruel and Murderous The phantasmal remnants of the founding lord of House Artemel, whose rise to power was bloody and brutal even by the standards of the most hardened Northmen. Men say that Arlusk now walks on the first nights of the winter moon, and some have met him face-to-face betwixt the boundaries of Delzorin Street and Chasso's Trot. Those who claim they know say that he is the tallest of men, with full black beard, coppery face, and such fearsome, burning, evil eyes that any who meet their gaze are bound to die within a calendar year.
The Grave-Worms "Like the moving of worms in a grave." A small band of grave-robbers, corpse-snatchers and bonesmen. Have managed to acquire illicit ward-tokens allowing surreptitious access to the commoner's crypts and ossuaries of the City of the Dead. Also occasionally indulge in the robbery and murder of sailors and slum dwellers in the dark alleys of Dock Ward. Led by the unctioner Maerunklos Pine-Bearded (who does indeed keep his beard oiled and well-scented, to help allay the occupational smell of decay).
The Great Ogre of Amn The Dread and Disgusting. A long-time fixture in the tavern tales and puppet shows of the city. The Ogre makes an appearance in countless adventurous chapbooks and heroic narratives, and every "hero-of-the moment" seems to have had a meeting with the southern brute (Nimoar, The Sûnesbright Knight, Athar the Shining Knight, Faravan Keen-Sighted and Piergeiron Paladinson, among others). When not serving as a resting-spot for the shining swords of Waterdhavian bravos, the Beast is commonly used to make jokes and crude nationalistic insults about the men of the South; "Marvel to the tale of the Dread and Disgusting Great Ogre of Amn! Only ate maidens of virtue, faithful to their husbands! Starved himself to death within a single summer, he did! Remember that, next time you meet a lass from Murann!" The Amnians, of course, have their own Ogre boogeyman, though they reverse the tale, and jeer the "Great and Disgusting Dread Ogre of the North."
Nadrasûne (N earth genasiF) A native of Lapaliiya. Has dusky skin and long, dark, curly hair, high fierce cheekbones and slanted, heavy-lidded, vibrant golden eyes. Her lips and fingernails are of the darkest umber (almost black). Her skin constantly flakes and sheds little wisps of dust, which she covers with cinnamon and powdered gemstone and passes off as an affectation. She favors diaphanous, shoulder-baring gowns accented with ornate stomachers and colorful hip-sashes. Seized by slavers and delivered to the courts of Calimshan. Once the prized apprentice and courtesan of the Cimbrunar of Volothamp. Now works as a downdancer at Mother Tathlorn's festhall, and makes a tidy side profit in the buying and selling of stolen ward-tokens (a venture she fronts for several unscrupulous Waterdhavian and Silvaeren merchants). Watched over by Ben-Durnan (CN HM Bar6), a hulking Ishaari barbarian more commonly known as "Bone-Bender."

Aushalue Melimurra (LN HF Exp9/P6 of Gond) A native of Lantan. Aushalue holds the title of Consecrated Craftsman of the Wonderbringer, the senior cleric involved in any creations aside from heavy forging and smithing (those duties going to the High Hammer Gorvar). A short, mirthful, always-bustling woman of endless cheer and ideas for improving an endless array of items, from eating utensils to wagon wheels to water locks. She is never without a full leather apron lined with countless pockets full of tools, scrap metals, and half-finished projects. She will often break off conversation mid-stride to pull out a quill and scrap paper and jot down whatever ideas happen to occur to her at the time. Among her other noteworthy endeavors, Aushalue was instrumental in getting the clergy of Gond to participate in the creation of the Welcome Gates (the giant portal located in the Lantanna embassy that leads to the far isle of Anchoril). It should be noted that this project involved a great amount of input and participation from the High Hammer and his underlings, and acted (for the time being, at least) to mend a traditional rift between the two branches of the clergy.
Gorvar Delvinghammer (LN DM Exp9/P5 of Gond) High Hammer of the Wonderbringer. Possesses an unsually short beard for a dwarf, but sports a thick, bristling moustache that makes him resemble a bright-eyed sea lion. Wears five golden hoops in each ear. Fond of halfling pipeweed and known to conceal items in at least six hidden pockets at all times. Gorvar knows two of the Six Secret Names of Gond (the ones that hold power over forging and metalsmithing), and he occasionally invokes them in his work. His involvement was crucial to the creation of the Lantanese portal known as the Welcome Gates, aided by Aushalue Melimurra and her acolytes. He is fond of the Consecrated Craftsman, and has worked to bring their traditionally rival offices closer together, though her recent close ties with the temple of Oghma has once again threatened strains between the two.
Grallen the Graver (LG HM Exp3) Proprietor of a small ground-floor shop located just down Coachlamp Lane from the Hlakken Stables. Grallen is a noted engraver, specializing in name-plates (both the functional doorjamb ones and the fanciful place-holders used at noble parties), shield devices, and other metalwork. He also has some talent at applying metallic dyes to armor and shields. Grallen is allied with the Red Sashes, and often uses his talents to forge coats-of-arms or other heraldic crests for the vigilante group.
Gund Gundblood (LG HM Ra8) A Wing Civilar (commander) of the Griffon Guard (Blue Wing). Cousin of Gurulf Gundsblood. Tall and hatchet-faced, with greying black hair and greying black stubble. Received a vicious blow to the right side of his head in a long-ago battle, and still bears the heavy, jagged scar. Has a profusion of indigo and crimson tattoos down both arms, which he keeps hidden under long sleeves when in the city. He rides the griffon named Hoarwing.
Gurulf Gundsblood Native of Gundarlun. Cousin of Gund Gundblood. Tall and thin, long fair hair, unusually deep voice. Earns coin as a "seaguard" (a warrior carried aboard merchant ships to fight off pirate boarding parties and port thieves).

Nammarnaera the Unquelled [NAMM-ar-NAY-ra] A great primal Lady of the wild North. A presence left over from the birthing dawn of the current age, when the mountains replaced the waters, and beings of flesh replaced those of scale. Dark and tangled, naked, save for a vast amber cloak of withered pine needles and a mantle of clear and bright snowfall. Her eyes are the glinting, flashing color of water-borne stones, her voice cold and swift like a torrent running down from the mountain snow-fields. Attended by bearded mountain goats and the leaping black trout of the rivers, and by those few bold cragsmen who have sought out her favorite cold spring, deep under the shadow of the sheer rocks and grinding ice of the Ever-Mounting Stair. Her utensils are all of oak and ash, and from great sprays of holly and fir are her enchantments woven. She has been killed, in the past, by god and elf, and wyrm and wizard, and each time she has come back as a bit less than before.
The Ever-Mounting Stair Encompasses the southern flanks of Mount Ygathrail and the stony Valley of Raed, sunk between the Sheer Deaths (The Five Fingers of Orlusk) and the Blue Maiden. One of the few traversible ways up into the high interior of the Spine (unpredictable and treacherous and known to have the eye of both Auril and Talos, but safer than the orc-held tunnels of Mhardimmor or the icy lair of the white wyrm Inangurotauth)
The Sheer Deaths A grouping of five preciptious, impossible crags in the Spine of the World. Sometimes called "The Five Fingers of Orlusk," corrupted from Aurlausk, the Ice Hunter name of the fallen dwarf-realm here (Mhardimmor, The Cold High Halls). Known to the elves as The Footmen of Jannatha, attendants tasked with watching over the Great Blue Egg (the glacier of The Blue Maiden), laid there by the celestial cuckoo of Jannatha, the first princess of Aryvandaar, turned to hoar and stone over their long centuries of guardianship.

So, are we saying that Lantan has an embassy in Waterdeep and the Welcome Gates are in this Waterdeep based embassy of Lantan.
Assuming that to be true, is there any truth to the stories whispered by a drunken, short bearded dwarf slurping vodka and applejack mixers in the Spoiled Spud tavern in dock ward? He was heard to be talking with a roughly 3 foot tall, slender individual with long silver hair, needlelike fingers, and wearing an intricately pocketed and buttoned tunic and pants in a shade of violet. This individual was said to be protected by a pair of clockwork golems, one not too dissimilar to the Lantanese Nimbblewrights and the other appearing to be a beetle with a crossbow with a magazine. After the two talked, the silver haired individual is said to have "turned into a hedgehog, pressed a button on the golems hand, climbed into a compartment of its chest and driven it out of the tavern".
What the two spoke of is unknown, except that at one point the silver haired individual is said to have looked the dwarf in the eyes, placed his hand upon his heart, and said "I swear it by Leira's Luxuriant Lips", to be followed by the dwarf stating, "You would do better to swear on Gond's Gilded Groin, if you expect me to believe that clap trap, but you are right about the"... and at that the dwarf was seen to look around and then begin speaking in whispers again.
It is thought that the metal used to craft the Welcome Gates came from a sky fragment that fell to earth during the Rain of Fire, and that at midnight on the nights of the new moon, an odd manifestation of blackness appears within this portal. Other rumors state that occasionally a shadowy, somewhat elf shaped entity has been seen to come through this manifestation of blackness, occasionally speaking even in a soft, whispering voice. The shadowy being is said to instill fear in those who meet its gaze, though the nimblewrights and iron golems that protect the Lantanese Embassy are unaffected. Just after the last new moon, a mere two nights ago, its said this shadow like entity made its way from the embassy towards the City of the Dead. Its said that a few hours later, the strange hedgehog driven clockwork golem and its "crossbow beetle" companion were seen to enter the graveyard as well. What happened afterward is unknown. |

Oh, we all know that ship sailed a while ago.
Besides, in truth the whole "Waterdeep" thing was just a gimmick to get scribes to click on the thread, since "Hey! Read My Random Nonsense" didn't focus-test well. In the end, the choice came down to "The Five NPCs You Meet In Waterdeep," "The Five Book Characters Who Would _Totally_ Win In A Fight (2E Rules Only!)" and "The Five Nubile Apprentices of Elminster You Find In His Cowpond Every Other Tuesday."
But I'm glad you like it! A bit more on The Blue Maiden and Inangurotauth can be found a page back, in the 22 Jan 2020 entry (also not about Waterdeep NPCs).

It is not an idea I would have gone with at all, but Jeff Quick did in his Perilous Gateways: Portals of Lantan WotC articles <archive.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=fr/pg20010919a>. And Eric made it extra-official (as he has been known to do) in the 3E City of Splendors - Waterdeep book.
This is also what I was referencing in the entry on Malcibar (page 16, 26 Dec 2019 entry)....which may be the very same thing your golem pilot is seeking....
....say, that "drunk dwarf" wasn't seen playing Old Man Ahghairon before meeting with your silver-haired individual, was he?

I shall have to look up that article after dinner.
Oh, and YES, Malcibar.... he cheats at Aroint Thee! AND Old Man Ahghairon
But, no, the spurious references I made up were to two "shadow elves"/Arak/Ellefolk that have discovered Malcibar's little tinkering with the portal. The silver haired individual was an Arak/Fir and the other was an Arak/Sith. The Fir subrace are noted tinkerers who love to talk about mechanisms, etc.. The Sith are pale, elf looking beings who dress in black and love necromancy.. What they're doing and why the Fir is seeking the Sith... not sure.... but given that the Fir had been studying an uncanny link between a doorway on the moon to a seeming power of fire and metalworking (which all Fir find immensely interesting) when he watched it suddenly go black as night and another shadow elf traversed through.... it seems that the Sith Shadow Elf may have some doings with the Arch-devil (such as speaking with spirits of the dead in the City of the Dead to gather information as a service to his Patron), and the Fir may have found someone that can tempt him into a bargain.
Oh, and the dwarf was Gorvar Delvinghammer, having to get a drink to calm his nerves after being stared at by the shadow that is the Sith. He had been called in to study the strange shadowy phenomenon that occurred for a few minutes every new moon. It had taken years for it to be realized, since noone was typically IN the portal room after hours except guardian constructs. Why exactly the portal has the occasional linkage to a doorway deep inside the moon in the underground dwelling of the ellefolk, noone knows, but perhaps it has to do with the metal used on the Waterdeep side having come from a Tear of Selune. |

Ha! Jokes on you, Mister Krash – every time you press CTRL-C and grumble in my general direction another NPC gets her name. Speaking of which....
==================================================
Dariaethla Durelf (CN ½EF F9/W10) Daria the Hammer, The Lady Hammer. A moderately-wealthy merchant captain and one of the city's best-known mercenary recruiters. Often works in concert with both Blazidon One-Eye and Filiare. She prefers to lead her assembled companies personally, and is quite good at strategies and tactics. She is also a shrewd negotiator, and is well known for gaining lucrative contracts for her recruits. Daria is descended from an Ardeep moon elven clan (House Ilkantar Banners-of-Summer-Horns) and is suspected by some of being one of the mysterious Lords of the city. [ Source: FR15 Gold & Glory, p.52. Name (as "Daria the Hammer")/Description/Stats given. Additional detail by me. ]
Deventer The Golden Glim-Weaver. A noted glim-spinner (hirespells who use illusions to provide animated "you are there" scenes of important battles and events to audiences at feasts and formal gatherings – with forewarning, to avoid upset or violence – or the illusions of spell effects at dramatic moments in a play). Has a love of beauty and elegance, shown in his delicate faces, fine complexions, beautiful hands, grace of attitude, taste in costume and furniture, and choice of splendid materials. Excels, obviously, in courtly love or noble tragedies, but not one to hire if you are attempting to set a phantasmal scene amidst the untidy and drab surroundings of the lower classes, or the blood-and-sweat of battlefield scenes. Maintains a parlor staffed by six dusky Calishite lasses on Hassantyr's Street, North Ward.
The Devil of the Drowned Phantasmal apparition or undead spectre, Dock Ward. Unseen, but not unfelt. "Whispers and waters, black and oily." Best to hurry to the nearest streetlamp and pretend its' just a trick of the damp sea breeze. Even though the air is becalmed like a sargasso. Is that moaning getting closer?
Dlamber Klathkroon Proprietor of Klath's Broadcloths ("fabrics of masterful weave and weft, of dense texture and lustrous finish"), Lathin's Cut, Trades Ward. Fierce eyebrows and keen, observant eyes; unkempt gray beard hiding sunken chin and cheeks. Proffers a variety of clothing, but his true passion lies in creating wild and whimsical costumes for masquerades and phantom-fairs. Also proficient in tailoring for the Demi-races.
Dlargan "Hook-Hand" (LG HM War6) A grizzled old retired whaler and freebooter. Heavy jowls, hard grey eyes. Has the florid red nose of a sot, but it has been long years since his last drink. In his youth, "Ol' Hook" was the companion of the feared Northman Tarek of Ruathym (now more commonly known as Highmaster Redleg, captain of the war fleet of Ruathym). He now lives in a shack in the Bittern Sands area south of the city walls, hard on the mud flats where local fishermen put their skiffs out to sea. Widely respected and well-loved by the hard-working fisherfolk. His common sense and iron knoblolly have long kept the peace over the insular fishing community, where he settles local disputes and disagreements without the involvement of the Watch.

With the greatest of respect, CEV this is AJA's thread for posting his NPC creations, not a free for all for everyone to post theirs. You can comment on his creations, suggest ways they can be integrated into a campaign or ask for more info about them, but please refrain. It's clear from your many other posts that you are very proud of your PC and NPC creations. Please showcase them in a thread of your own.

Hah! That is precisely why I set the 'five' limit myself! Not that I can always keep to it, either!
Also, George is correct in that I would prefer to keep separate scrolls separate, where they can breathe on their own. But the Realms is indeed at it's best and brightest as a shared world, so I will keep a weather eye out for Curudin and his companions – that brief musical murmur or momentary flash and swirl of a cloak in the shadows – as I continue making my way through the streets of Waterdeep, sketching the greater hustle and bustle of the city.
==================================================
The Shields of Snail Street One of Waterdeep's oldest continuing adventuring fellowships, and the inspiration for other all-demihuman groups such as the Buckleswashers and the Four Footpads. Snail Street is the center of Hin activity in Waterdeep, and is the location the fellowship draws its name from (their badge is a left-facing argent snail smoking from a curved blue pipe, whose four-pointed grey "smoke-stars" curl back to the right over the snail). The Shields have been active in and around the city for some decades, and their roster is currently composed of young Hin who grew up on many tales of Shieldly derring-do. The older members, the "Silver Snails" (of whom only Merlic Bramblebranch, Jhusper Jamblejack and Bungobar Cozytoes are still alive and resident in the city), keep an eye on their younger cousins, but consider themselves too wise for such "foolishness" nowadays. The current Shields are informally led by the bravo Halvas "Halfhand." Their roster, which fluctuates with each passing season, has included virtually all adventurous young Hin in the city (seperate entries indicated in italics); Arsath "Lightfoot", Bardlin Amblebuck, Hammabar "Holy Hamm" Hallemble, Hammabar "Bloody Hamm" Helmshigh, Jaster Winterwink, Jholene Merryminstrel, Ludlin Minstrelwish, Merryander "Blue Merry" Bluefoot, Mharduin "Mhardy" Helmshigh, Monk Helmshigh, Tanner Tencoin and Whillan Bellshigh.
Shimbleshee of the Sails (CG HF F/P of Valkur) Lithe and acrobatic. Curly blue-black hair, flashing green eyes. Prefers colorfully-striped breeches and loose tunics with slashed sleeves. Earns coin aboard the merchant ships of the Sea of Swords as healer, diviner, and able swordarm. Fights with rapier and belaying pin. When in Waterdeep, can be hired at the Shrine of the Sea and the Stars. "Shimbleshee" is not her given name; she took it from the catch-all term in folklore for helpful spirits or creatures of the waves (dolphins – were or regular, sea elves, wave pixies, sailor's delights, servitors of Selûne Starry-Eyed, etc.). Favors both half-elven women of a similarly slender build and half-orc men of rugged looks and rough manner.
Shuffle-Shoon A popular character in northern street-plays and stage farce. Depicted as an old, ragged, potbellied Calishite who stumbles about the stage, claiming past glory and dominion of all the North. Flatulent, overly fond of drink and rude animal companionship. Typically exits stage left with the aid of a stout thwack! of good Northern steel. Sometimes schemes (unsucessfully) to steal away the Northern heroes' love interest.
Sklaegund of Snowdown A member of the Men of the Black Hammer Banner, one of the city's itinerant "blade fellowships." Appears as a great red mess (long red hair bound in a Moonshaen braid, flourishing red moustache, florid face and abundant freckles). Smokes a long-stemmed pipe, proficient with lute and flute and mandolin. Carries a Netherese wand of magic missiles (9c.) to which was long-ago bound the air elemental Flalshenal. When the wand's charges are expired, Flalshenal will be freed, albeit greatly reduced in power (stats as an invisible stalker), and will seek to kill its' wielder.
The Sorrow-Canters Subset of Sharran faithful. Fill the darkened vaults of the Lady's temples with their wailings and loss. Recently bereaved pay coin to have the Canters' cries follow their loved ones into The Beyond of Everything Ever Thought or Dreamed. "Those Who Chant a bitter despair To the dark, haunted heart of the Night"

Alvhast "Goldenrobes" The Mage Most Magisterial of Mintarn. At least he was until 1372DR, when he was rudely grabbed through a high window of the Moonlight-Pale Tower by "a horrid searching tentacle" spotted with either many tiny sucking maws or many horrific razor-sharp tines and pulled into the night, never to be seen again. His replacement, the Ruathymaar sorcerer Gnarlûf (NAR-loof), was quick to order all sea-ward facing windows of the tower bricked and barricaded thereafter.
Amanethrae Artemel (CN HF Aris) A noble of House Artemel (eldest daughter of Lord Thandios). Ethrae is slim of build, possessed of curly dark brown hair (to mid-back) and dark eyes. Sly, sharp-tongued, very forward and self-assured, with a thunderous temper (often called "Evil Eth" by those who fall afoul of either her ire or her schemings). Married to the moneylender and land speculator Anthalan Anthmost, with whom she has two sons, Thalan and Thandar.
Amardan the Undecided (N HM Exp2/T2) Grey eyes and red hair, fair skin liberally mottled with large splotchy freckles. Originally apprenticed to a member of the Scrivener's Guild. Trained (to no avail) in the Art by Logros Hlandarr. He now earns coin as a shady (unlicensed) scrivener, coppers-a-day torchbearer, and henchman-for-hire. Great friends with Hanikar the Rogue (CN HM T3).
Amauldra Wild-Foot "She Who Danced Till The Stars Grew Dim" (And took Fair-Haired Lathander as a lover, and had a son by him). Commonly referenced in the folklore and fireside tales of the North. It is said her eyes were bright like the stars; her hair was black like the sky at night; and her skin was as white as the moonlight on an icèd northern lake. Some claim her as an avatar of the goddess Selûne Silver-Horned, others as some sort of local nature spirit. Those who ascribe to the second part of her rhyming epithet claim the child of their union to be the aasimon Telmaur, "The Morning's Golden Glamour."
Telmaur (NG aasimon [monavic deva]) The Morning's Golden Glamour. A servitor of Lathander; often said to be the child of the Morninglord and Amauldra Wild-Foot. The Morninglord's most common planar servitor on Faerûn. Favors appearing in the form of a hardy, bronzed, well-armored youth. Short, curly golden hair and short, curly golden beard. Eyes of piercing blue. Commanding, precise, demanding. Smiles only at children and the afflicted; laughs only when in battle against evil.

Dromur Pellgentle Tethyrian bard, author of the popular tragedy The Oarsmen of Roan (1288DR). "Selûne's Woe was o'er one hand and the searing lances of fiery dawn the other, when the long-echoing war horns began to blow."
Drulvaryn Dancinghorn (Drool-VAR-enn) The Harpist of the Woods, The Speaker of the Wild Host. A long-ago bard and envoy between humans of the Dessarin lands and the scattered elves of the Ardeep. Famed in the city for his infrequent visits, which always included masterful, haunting performances and nights-long debaucheries in the tankard houses. Said to have been raised by mystical druids and crazed korreds. Perhaps best known in Waterdhavian legend for negotiating a settlement that averted the ire of a Wild Hunt from the city confines. Believed to be one of the few humans allowed to sail to the Evermeet of the Elves to spend his final days (although at least one tale claims that the elves soon tired of him, and sent him back). His harp, the swan-headed Alurendil, is said to still float within the elfwood of Ardeep, calling out its haunting melodies.
Druth Azheult (LG HM F8) (DROOTH Ah-ZOOLT) Master (captain) of the Pride of Waterdeep, a raker of the naval guard. The Pride is one of the newest rakers in the fleet – and certainly the shiniest, as Master Azheult keeps his crew busy applying endless coats of paint and varnish to her. The Pride is mainly used to escort the ships of visiting envoys and heads of state into and out of the harbor, and is regarded as little more than "the Lord's toy-boat" by the rest of the fleet.
Duerthla Drathwinter (Doo-EARTH-la) Proprietor of Alustriel's Wondrous Wardrobe (Vondil Street, Sea Ward), a highcoin clothier that claims to sell direct replicas of all the fashions worn by Queen Alustriel of Silverymoon (currently one of the glittering "places to be seen" for social climbers and the upper crust of the city). The Wardrobe features an endless catalogue of tafta and shimmersheen, stomachers and ribbons, rampart (platform) shoes and gemwork gloves, brocaded reticules, opalescent feathers, artificial hairpieces, outlandish scent-bottles and bejewelled hand-fans of all size and decoration – nothing that the Serene Lady of Silverymoon would actually be recognized in, if one were to travel to the court of the Gem of the North, but lavish and expensive enough to convince the average status-minded highcoin matron otherwise.
Duldoum Blackalbrow (LN HM W) (Dull-DOOM) A watchmage of Trades Ward. Duldoum fancies himself as a talented musician, and spends much of his spare time composing various syrupy love songs and strained melodies (which sharp-eared passerby can hear the mage humming to himself as he strolls by on patrol).
