Considering that they're still making 5E material, that further indicates it's doing well.
Besides, we're not talking about business practices. This tangent was over whether or not D&D had been destroyed, which it clearly has not been. |

I look forward to seeing Gameholecons adventurers.
Did you see reports of Ed's own Knights campaign in his Q&A thread?

Opinion and sales are not the same thing. You may not like something, but if it's moving a lot of units and making a nice profit for the owners, then it's doing well.
But didn't people say the same about D&D4? Or, for example, Star Wars perform well? Better than "Watching The Paint Dry", sure. But is this well for Star Wars? It isn't. Star Wars was replaced with some cut paper with its brand stamped on top, not unlike D&D 4. To put it politely. And this shows. http://www.showbiz411.com/2017/12/24/box-office-update-fans-speak-with-closed-wallets-as-the-last-jedi-now-175-mil-behind-force-awakens Which confirms that what we knew as Star Wars is indeed dead. Its new owners did not bury it, they place the corpse in different poses and take selfies with it, but... it's dead.
quote: I've no interest in the 5E ruleset, myself, but from what I've read, it's put D&D back on top of the RPG ruleset -- a position they'd lost to Pathfinder, during the 4E era. And they're continuing to put out new stuff... So, other than your opinion of it's worth, all factual indicators are that it's doing well.
That's something. But is this because 5e really perform well, or because Pathfinder grew stale (or rotten, or turned into schizophrenic haystack worse than AD&D2 in its last years, or all of the above)? Because "better than D&D 4" is damning with faint praise. Also, which improvements happened in 5? Fixes for some of the bad parts of 3.x "backported" from Castles&Crusades and other 3rd party branches? |
