Please note that I mentioned both seasonal periods to correlate with the fact that both the northern and southern hemispheres can expect the release of the following WotC products -
The schedule is as follows:
September 2004: D&D Basic Set, Monster Manual III, Frostburn, and Eberron: Whispers of the Vampire's Blade
October 2004: Special Edition Player's Handbook, Libris Mortis: The Book of Undead, and Shining South (Forgotten Realms).
November 2004: Complete Arcane, Races of the Wild, Sharn: City of Towers (Eberron), and Map Folio 3-D.

I knew that would trigger an anger-string with you Rad.... Unfortunately, I don't know anything more about the Special Edition Player's Handbook, than what I've already posted. Even the EN World people are closed-mouthed with details about this product.

Frostburn: No
Eberron Whispers of the Vampire's Blade: There willl be a cold day in hell
Special Edition Player's Handbook: A leather bound PHB its just a cheap marketing stunt
Libris Mortis The Book of Undead: Yes and Ill buy it straight away
Shining South: Yes and i will rush out to get it
Complete Arcane: Yes but I wont rush
Races of the Wild: Nope this like Races of Stone is useless to me, I already have the PGTF and Races of Faerun
Sharn: City of Towers (Eberron): Hell still hasnt frozen over

Fall Cateloge score
4/11
WOTC are rapidly loosing my money

Im with you there, Dargoth. Other than Races of the Wild and Frostburn, which I will get.
The PHB is just a blatant cash grabber. I remember when White Wolf tried a similar stunt for the Ravenloft core rulebook by releasing a faux-leather bound version just before the standard version. Needless to say that the standard version is on my shelf....and IMO, the "special edition" looked absolutely terrible!
Im quite excited about the Libris Mortis though, especially if its of the same high quality of Draconomicon.
Shining South has obviously got my giddy.
Eberron aside (wont be touching it, ive got enough on with core D&D, FR and Ravenloft ).... the 3D map folio doesnt appeal at all as I never use models or minatures in my games, I think it takes a lot away from the atmosphere and feel of true role-playing. |

Perhaps it will integrate the new metric rules.
Let's see if that will get him to go over the edge.

Well, other than the Monster Manual III and Frostburn tomes, my September purchases like to be rather 'WotC-lite'
I'm not intending to bother with anything Eberronish until I've at least had a chance to look through the (copy of my pre-ordered) Eberron campaign tome.
October's Libris Mortis: The Book of Undead, and obviously Shining South look to be my only WotC October orders, and November's Complete Arcane will be my one definite purchase for the month. Whether or not I purchase Races of the Wild will be partially dependent upon the upcoming Races of Stone, and likewise, my decision to buy the Sharn: City of Towers sourcebook will be decided by my opinions of the ECS.

November 2004: Complete Arcane, Races of the Wild, Sharn: City of Towers (Eberron), and Map Folio 3-D.
My own choices:
D&D Basic Set: Not likely. I've got enough pared-down rulesets to last me a few years. MMIII: Yes. Wizards doesn't actually seem to be doing too badly on monster creation, and there were ten to twelve monsters or such from both the MMII and FF that immediately caught my attention. Frostburn: I quite frequently use arctic climates. As such, I'll be picking this up. Eberron: Whispers of the Vampire's Blade: No thanks. Even though it may be cheap, it just likely won't be worth it. Special Edition Player's Handbook: I'll take a look at this. If it's just a leather binding, then no. If there's some other feature that's worth it, such as a slate of new artwork or such, I might. Libris Mortis: The Book of Undead: I use undead quite frequently, so this will be a must-have for me. However, I am mildly concerned about the drop in page count... Shining South: Yes. There's not much more to say here. Complete Arcane: One of my favorite parts of the D&D game is arcane magic. As such, yes to this. Races of the Wild: I might, if it has anything to offer over Races of Faerun. Sharn: City of Towers: For some odd reason, I find myself anticipating this product. I've always liked not-exactly-normal cities, and if this is original enough, it'll go on the list. Map Folio 3D: No use to me. |

I'd say something about White Wolf's packaging policy, but that would be going too far off topic... |

It's not normal to see a quarter from them without some limited release. They also have a habit of producing regular, practically essential titles as limited release items. |

I just dont understand why WotC (and previously a trait of TSR) continue to release these Basic Sets\Starter sets etc. They insist on trying to target much younger players using these type of products. A waste of time and money, IMHO.

I think youll be disappointed. WotC are not likely to shell out for redoing the artwork. The artwork is pretty amazing in the existing PHB anyway.

Actually, I must admit that I've looked at the Sharn tome in that way as well. I'm also hoping that maybe it has some extra ideas that I might 'borrow' to flesh out my own recreation of the Realms-own city of spires - Iriaebor.

its funny you should say that Sage, as I thought the very same thing when I first saw the announcement of this product. Iriabor is one of my favorite FR cities (hence my plea in previous posts to resurrect the Cities novel series and wish list of a new FR Cities Source book (similar to the section in the FRA)) and I did wonder if this product may be of some use. |

Special Edition Players Handbook?
Well, if it looks really cool AND is updated AND has more info and all the Errata worked into it, I just might give it a try...
Although, I´d have loved to see a special edition DMG instead, featuring more artwork (like pics for each and every magic item) and more Dungeonmastering advice, like they did in the 2nd Ed. with the Catacomb Guide and Creative Campaigning books...
Besides, has anyone had a look at Gamemastering Secrets (2nd ed)?? Is it any good? (I know that´s off-topic, but just came to my mind while mentioning the catacomb guide...)

Now if it were a leather-bound FRCS with ornate locking clasp then count me in!!!
As I mentioned previously, I cant see it containing any updates, it is merely a new cover, nothing more. Id take a guess that we wont see the same for the DMG as everyone playing D&D, be you a player or DM, you will need a PHB...therefore id assume it is WotC's best selling D&D product by far. It wouldnt be to a financial advantage to do the same to the DMG with the ratio of DM's to players. |

Well met
Thank ye, Dargoth Rad should know better!
As for this leather-bound Players Handbook tome of which ye all speak of..... it is indeed quite intriguing. I agree with Rad though on another matter, an leather-bound FRCS tome would be extremely prized, as would a special rebound version of the renowned elven bible - Evermeet: A Novel |

I'm NOT reconsidering: I'll gladly pay that much for a PHB bound in LEATHER!! man! this one will last me forever... much more durable than that glossy cardboard crap we've been fed for the last few years. Not that those didn't look good, but woe to you if you actually carry them around in a bag and use them for play, as they don't travel too good and are meant to remain in a good, safe library...
However, LEATHER!!! I'd have the thing follow me at the bottom of my backpack when I go camping!
Yes... this durable tome shall be my last Player's Handbook... I'm happy with 3.5 anyhow, so I'll stick with this set of rules no matter comes out later (disclaimer -- unless WotC absolutely blows my mind with 4th edition but I definitely don't want a 4th edition...) |

I actually agree with you PDK. I'll very likely pick up this new PHB, im hoping they dont do a DMG and MM however. I doubt they would, as the PHB must sell many more copies than the DMG anyway.
I have a fair number of 2nd ed material, and have all the 3.0\3.5 rulebooks to date - therefore I could not possibly justify moving to a 4th edition. Obviously i'll pick up all future FR products, but as far as rulesets go, i'm drawing the line at any future editions. 3.5 works, thats good enough for me. |
