Ok, well, I've been ridiculed a touch in other forums for this idea, but people here are so much more welcoming to ideas. Originally my idea was for all of Faerun, but I've come to realize that had alot of inherant logistical problems (raw area) so I've toned it down alot, and I'm going to attempt making a few towns/cities and some of the wilderness area's of The Western Heartlands on tabletop, in scale for use with the Minatures. I reside in Ontario, Canada, so if anyones close and interested feel free to email me at Evans_j@sympatico.ca but anyhow, aside from that, I'm more interested in peoples thoughts on this. Does it sound interesting to you, would you be interested in seeing it after it's progressed some, perhaps even coming to play on it if I could open it to the D&D community. What do you all think? Cool, not cool, mildly interested, really interested, etc, etc?

Your idea seems mildly interesting. If you do make it should tell me I'd like to see your project

Hey, I like your idea alot. I'd suggest you start out with some small lokale, one town or only a village and late try something larger. However, I hope you know that such a thing would take a hell of work and good planning. If you suceed with your concept, I'd love to see pictures of the project postet here.

Hail!
This sounds like one of my Schemes...

I have a half complete 'Floor plan' of Daggerfalls lying around somewhere. I started the project by drawing the out lines of buildings shown in the maps featured in 'Return of Randal Morn' adventure. I used a basic CAD program called Autosketch. This is a simple 'point and click' program, used out of convenience. I used my floor plans in a game. However I found them to be unpractible- the game was moving faster than me printing and rendering the sheets. Also the plans are only really useful (IMHO) in a 'city' campaign where alot of combat takes place in the streets they are almost completely useless in a role-playing environment.

I'm not meaning to put you off this project I'm just recounting my experience of it. IMHO I prefer the ole' white board and markers for placing miniatures with 3-d models for 'special dungeons' or one offs.

Let us know how you get on!

wow, all this sudden interest :D Well, for those of you interested, here's the basic outline. right now I'm trying to collect information and materials. Information being that on the Western Heartlands, specifically the area surrounding Baldurs Gate. (for a visual in your mind, think the area covered in the BG I game. just for a rough idea of where) I'm trying to get ahold of official maps of that area to begin with.
I intend to start with either BG itself, or one of the closeby towns, and build outward from there, one table at a time. That way I can initally have one table to play on, and as each one is constructed, I'll have more to use. Initially, playing on the tables probably won't cover a campaign, but be used in it occassionally, with my current method of large graph paper for drawing maps on.
When actual construction begins, I intend to have my fiancee try and set up a website where I can post blurbs and pictures of my progress so look to see a link for that in possibly a few months when the first table begins.
If any of you have any official maps of the area could you let me know please? evans_J@sympatico.ca the help would be vastly appreciated. and for all you interested, when I have a few (3-6) tables constructed, I hope to be able to allow people to come and see them, and play on them if they wish. I'm currently starting to collect minatures, so those will be available for use, you just gotta bring your campaign module and players :)

Karesch, have you looked into the Foldup Paper Models available for free download on the WotC site? There is some truly useful material on offer there, from simple cottages, to octagonal towers and cobblestone roads.

You may want to take some time to have a look through the archive, there might be something there that you can use in addition to what you are planning.

Don't forget Dungeon Works. They've some wonderful cutouts available on PDFs for dungeons, tombs, sewers, etc. You might find something there.

Bookwyrm! That was my very next post! Grr!

These sets (Which i showed Bookie *Growl*) are truely excellent, I have Several including Dungeon Work, Dungeon Works; Gothic Realms, Castle Works, and Village Work. They are very high quality and are actually alot easier than you might think to put together.

Now I'm off to grown at Bookwyrm some more

(Just kiding.... )

If you've got a officiall Games Workshop around you you could ask some of the guys that work there about such things, thay tend to know quite some about such thinks, they allways have quite big dioramas at theyr cons and such. Or get your hands on some of the gaming mag of theirs, if you've got a friend that plays Warhammer.

cool suggestions from all, I will look into those for playing in the meantime, however, what I'm building on tables is going to be done using wood, branches, etc, etc. it's all going to look as authentic as I can make it. My father is heavily into model railroading, so some of his scenery supplies are going to begin "disappearing" shortly *muah hahahaha* "the shadows did it I swear..." but yeah, back to topic. give me about 5-6 weeks I should have a couple buildings done. I've got architectural plans drawn up (5 yrs of schooling well spent :D) already, for my personal keep, so I think I'm going to make it first, just as a pilot project. Once I have a substantial portion of it built, I'll get my fiancee to put up a website and post some pictures for ya'll to take a boo at. hopefully you'll all be impressed. keep the ideas coming though, I appreciate the cut out ones, I'm gonna use those for playing in the meantime :)

New update... I now have over 100 minatures to use. 64 official WotC minatures and (I pray I don't get in trouble for this) 96 LotR mini's from the LotR boardgame, they aren't as neat as the WotC ones, but you get them in groups of elves, humans, orc's and goblins, so it makes it easier to buy "fillers" for certain things, and they're almost exactly the same scale, and the ones I got were really really really cheap to buy, so I couldn't help myself. but yeah, I know have 160 minatures so far, so I'm not doing to bad I don't think :)

Yes, the GW sets and diaramas are well worth the effort, however people should take note of the amount of time one most devote to this project to accurately construct and paint these extremely detailed displays.

I know, because I only have three complete sets, which have taken me nearly five years to finish...

there aren't any GW's close to here, I think the nearest one would be in TO which is minimum hr away, mebe take a trip up there in a couple months, but as for now, I'm just gonna tinker around, I've got a fairly solid background in model building and scenery making, however, once I get my car back on the road, I'll probably take a trip up there and see what I can see. More good idea's though, I'm lovin it.

New update, I'm gonna be attempting to build my keep this weekend, my lovely fiancee is coming down for 5 days or so, so we're going to spend this weekend building and painting stuff. So hopefully next week she'll be able to get that website up with at least the pics of what we did this weekend, and ya'll can see and *cringes* criticize my workmanship :P lol. anywho, I'm off. keep those idea's comin.

Oooh, my ears are burning!

I'm the fiancee webmaster you've heard oh so little about.

I'm looking for suggestions for the site. I'm completely lost as to what I'm going to do with it. I haven't even come up with a page title yet. I was thinking Lair of Canyia Inhabited by Karesch . . . but it sounded too much like innuendo to me .

Any suggestions you could give about the site or even idea about the miniatures would be greatly appreciated. You can send suggestions to RealmWeavers@hotmail.com.

I may ask the Lady Kazandra to send a few suggestions over to you then. Since my free-time is limited, she has taken it upon herself to be largely responsible for the creation and design processes involved with my own website for the PbEM campaign I'll be running.

While they are both differing themes, both the purposes behind your website and mine, the spread of ideas can only be a good thing...

Well of course there's an adress but there's not much point in posting it since there's nothing on it except a message board.

Alas, I'm home from work and I see my lovely fiancee has been hard at work checking up on me and building our site ;) I do love her so. The site address will be posted probably friday night or saturday afternoon, so you can all look forward to your first glimpses of what we're doing then. There's little point in posting an address to a blank site though. So we'll say the official opening will be Saturday afternoon so ya'll can have something to look forward to :)
Anyhow, still looking for map ideas, if anyones got anything? Building my keep will probably only keep me busy a couple days, and once I'm done that, I'll be itching to do more, so all the help people can think of would be most excellent.

Well, I'm sorry to announce, we ran into a bit of a wall with launching the site, and unfortunately it's going to be delayed... *dives for cover as the fruit and various hard objects start flying* I'm going to try and right this as fast as I can, but it looks like it's going to be at least a couple days before the keep can be started, Sorry folks. I'll try and keep you all up to date.

There's no rush Karesch . I know how difficult it can be to get a site on the web up and running properly. Just take your time, I'm sure we'll all enjoy your efforts once the work is completed.

Hello all,

Well, we finally put up some pictures. These are just of the WotC miniatures we have, we're going to show pictures of the keep in progress next week. The site isn't complately done yet. We should have most of it finished by tonight at 11:00pm Eastern Standard Time. We'll be putting blurbs underneath the pictures tonight and finishing off the About The Creators section. Then there's only the About Project Realms section to go which will be done whenever Chad get's around to it
