i can spend hours and hours reading new and interesting things about the realms and there is still so much more to learn about them. some times when i visit the WotC i get really frustrated when i realise there is so much new info on this page since the last time i visited it.
i like it very much that there is a lot of background info about the realms, but sometimes it keeps me off the important things as reading the books and so on.
well, what can i do? sometimes i just donīt have the time to stay up to date and there are so many things i just donīt know jet.
well, thatīs a dilemma?!?!?!?!?!

Firstly, quit your day job then lock yourself in a room with nothing but FR products and an internet connection 
Seriously, you do need to devote a LOT of time to the Realms. I read FR novels all the time, once one is finished, I pick up the next straight away. Try to read the latest releases first then fill time in with older novels. That way at least you are within the current affairs, you can brush up on historical events in between.
...and always have the FRCS to hand as it contains vast amounts of useful information.

then, you are right about that it takes a lot of time, but i have no intention to devote my whole live to the realms. itīs to dangerous becaus it can happen that i loose myself there and canīt get back to reality any more.
but then again, there was seldome a thing that was worth it!!!!

And don't feel bad about not being able to assimilate it all. I've been hooked on the Realms for over 10 years, and I've got a huge amount of the stuff, but I still have a hard time trying to keep it all straight and organized in my head.

And don't forget that there are a bunch of files over at the WotC website for free download. I'd pay attention to the Volo's Guides first; they're good for information. Plus, Elminster's "corrections" are funny.
They're 2e, but don't let that confuse you. Just remember that they're describing a place a few years ago (in Toril's time) and just skip over the stat blocks. |

| Actually I only read the novels.So that's the extent of my knowledge so far.I used to game,and pull my knowledge from back at that time.Most of my knowledge today comes from reading what all of our fellow scribes discuss.So if you don't have enough lifetimes to devote to FR.Then as RAD said,"Quit your day job"! |

Actually Rad, with others like ourselves and the other wise scribes where, we can answer any question, reasonable or not (of course it can all be specutation, but it's the challenge of presenting a believible theory than anything eles). As for the color of Tempos/Tempus' boxers most likely steel grey... gray... hmmm with red....... That is if he's not going commando (ie. without any) so we can answer any question. We can built castles in the clouds... not our fault if they happen to fall |

This is good advice. There is FAR too much material to be able to take in all at once. Pick an area depending on how much you want to personalize the region. If you want a ready-to-run, completely mapped and detailed setting, choose the Dalelands, Cormyr, or Waterdeep as your area. If you want to create some of the background on your own, choose an area that hasn't been developed in much detail such as Turmish or Impiltur.
If you narrow your focus, you can really get a wonderful setting established. |

well itīs not that i am a complete noob to the realms! spent my time with them for (now about) 10 years too. but since i live in austria (no thatīs not that country with the kangoroos ) it was very hard gathering information. well i got the first edition of the FRCS (got it yesterday before falling asleep) and i read it some time back. the problem is that i canīt stay on the top of the wave of information thats flooding me right now.
now itīs easy to get some information. open the WotC page look for it there, if you donīt find it councel the wise sages of candlekeep with their neverending knowledge.
i do have to say, that i pretty much enjoy my rests at candlekeep and learn from the wise, maybe some day someone will listen to my stories!!!!!

I live in Russia (not Rashamen ) and for me it is even harder to get FR books. But somehow i manage to get them.
fanatic, i'll give an advice - don't try to get all the information about FR at once. You can't learn everything about a world in a day or a week. And do not lock yourself in a room full of Novels or you will begin to hate them soon. |

well iīm not the guy, who sitīs in a room with books over books reading all the time.
iīve got a job to do. (well at least i should)
every now and then i get a little bit insane and devote every free minute to the realms, but only now and then.
on the othere hand there are times when i have no free minute and thatīs where it starts.
so i think i will read the novels and spare me the rest for when i have more time. (retirement ) |

itīs not like that would be enough to "know" all the things that stand there.
mayhaps it would make "storing" the info a lot easier, but you have to read it, no matter in what form you archive it.

Most of the stuff on the WotC site is archived. You may have to look around for some of the odder things (like the Candlekeep Collection), but most of the stuff can be readily found from the Recent Updates page or from the Forgotten Realms page.
Whenever I read something interesting on there, I immediately copy it to a Word document, and save it to my hard drive. That way, I have all that stuff at my fingertips, and can find it a lot more readily than I could by trying to find it on the website or by using their search engine (which I think was designed by tinker gnomes).
Similarly, since I've come onto these forums, I save much of the Realmslore to text files so I can have it handy. |

i have wasted a lot of paper printing interessting things now and than, and keeping them in order is not easy, or finding something.
really a good idea.
