Sorry, I know this is off topic (kinda), but its 2 am and I'm upset, and I just need to type this. So, yesterday morning, my PC suddenly takes an update (yes, I forgot to tell it to defer updates). I had two openoffice documents open on my desktop. Afterwards, I've just found that both copies are now corrupt. They were on different hard disks, but both just happened to be copies of something I was working on (I was referring to an old copy to fix something). A couple months work down the drain.

Does OpenOffice make backup copies like MS Office does? You might be able to open those and recover the text (minus some changes, but better to lose days or hours rather than months). You might also be able to extract the raw text from the files in a text editor, depending on what the format does to the document (I don't have OpenOffice, so I'm not really sure). I highly recommend cloud backup solutions like BackBlaze or Crashplan to prevent these sorts of things from costing you so much in time and effort.

I'm going to have to close this, because it's not a Forgotten Realms topic.
But before I do that, I'll note that Word has an autosave feature that's saved my butt in the past. I'd assume OpenOffice has the same; you should be able to look in the settings to see if it does and where those autosave copies are located.
USB sticks and external hard drives are good ideas, as well. You can get a 1TB external hard drive for under $100; I have two that I bought for less than $60. And both were highly-rated on Amazon, too.
Sorry about having to close this topic, and I'm sorry that you lost your files. Hopefully, an autosave function will save the day. |
