The standard image of a wizard almost always includes a staff. While charged staffs are useful, they never really matched my vision of a wizard's tool. For that reason, I developed this prestige class for arcane spellcasters who want a wepon with real power. The cost, of course, is that the magic gained in the staff is power you won't recieve from normal spell advancement.
*terrible name, I know. If anyone can come up with a better one, go ahead. The Spellstave Level 1-----+1 enhancement, cantrip 2-----enchanted strike, call staff 3-----+1 arcane class, find staff 4-----+2 enhancement, unbinding strike 5-----summon staff, store 6-----+1 arcane class, lesser purge 7-----+3 enhancement, vanish 8-----contingency 9-----+1 arcane class, heal 1/day 10----+4 enhancement, greater purge *it should be noted that the enhancements and abilities of a Spellstaff are only useable by the Spellstave himself. In the hands of anyone else, it is merely a quarterstaff of the quality the Spellstave produced(though it does have the augmented protection of a magical item) When a Spellstave dies, his staff loses its powers.
Cantrip: The staff can be used to cast at will a single cantrip chosen upon reaching 1st level.
Enchanted Strike: At second level, a Spellstave can choose to grant his staff either the flaming, frost, or shock special ability.
Call Staff: At secone level, a Spellstave can call his staff to himself. It travels physically through the air, and so can be blocked by barriers that bar any standard method of approach. This power can be used at will as long as the character is within 50 ft/Spellstave level.
Find Staff: The Stavemaster is constantly aware of his staff's relative location; he knows in what direction it is, and how far away. If his staff is on another plane, he can sense its existence, but nothing else.
Unbinding Strike:At fourth level, a Spellstave's staff can choose to give his staff the power to either turn undead, dispel magic, or dismiss(as the spell) on a successful hit. Only one ability can be chosen, and the effect is as that of a spellcaster of the Spellstave's level.
Summon Staff: At will, a Spellstave can cause his staff to come to him instantaneously. This ability does not function if his staff is on another plane.
Store: The Spellstave's staff can store up to the wielder's Spellstave level in spells.
Lesser Purge:For every two Spellstave levels, the staff can attempt to dispel any unwanted/malignant magics upon the wielder once per day, as dispel magic cast by the wielder.
Vanish: On command, the Stavemaster can store his staff in an extradimensional pocket. The staff can be recalled at will.
Heal 1/day: At 9th level, a Spellstave can call upon his staff once a day to heal him, as the spell heal as cast by a cleric of his level.
Greater Purge: Three times per day, a Spellstave's staff can attempt to purge the wielder of any mind control, poisons, malignant spells, and unwanted magic.

While I like the principle behind the idea of this PrC, I wonder why you would actually attempt something like this when Monte Cook's 'Magister' class from Arcana Unearthed already deals with some of the essential elements you highlight here as crucial to this class?.
The 'Magister' is basically a class that sees the standard wizard staff as the ultimate focus of a mage's power. You should take a look at the class, if only to see what ideas you can generate that would make your class the better option to choose for players who like this idea.

It's a good idea, at least. I do think that it needs work. Try Sage's suggestion; I don't know what the Magister is like, since I don't have the book, but if the Sage likes it . . . . |
Hell hath no fury like all of Candlekeep rising in defense of one of its own.

Arcana Unearthed is a great source for some fine elements to add to a game. |

You are quite right about that Sirius. I've been trying to work some of the races from the book into my FR campaigns, but it's hard to find a regional area in Faerun where Anubis-styled creatures can work, and play...
I've already worked the Litorians into the Shaar region though, but to do that, I had to displace the large number of wemic tribes know to populate both the Eastern and Central Shaar...

I love the Champion from Arcana as the class can be used for those wishing to defend a variety of causes.
I wasn't even going to pick up this book. I'm so glad Mortality Radio allowed me to obtain it. |
