Hi, first time poster. Sorry if this is in the wrong section. I am participating in a 3.5e DnD campaign and I admittedly don't know a great deal about the forgotten realms setting and I was wondering if this character made sense and if it didn't make sense how I could alter the concept to make sense.
I want to make a CG Halfling rogue who is a follower of Oghma. I stumbled upon Oghma's dogma when I was trying to come up with a character and I noticed the part that talked about how knowledge should be used with care, but hiding it away is never a good thing, spreading knowledge so that all folks know more, etc.
The setting we will be playing in will have a very corrupt government in a post apocalyptic Faerun and my idea was to take the concept of Oghma further and to funnel it through a chaotic good, anti authoritarian and anti establishment rogue character, a character who believes that all information should be open to the public, and uses his rogue skills to somehow gain information or to infiltrate these corrupt organizations to reveal this information to the public person as sort of a form of intellectual anarchy.
I really like this concept and I'd sooner give up Oghma as a deity in favor of something else before I gave up the concept to keep Oghma. I was just wondering if this character concept falls in line with a perspective an Oghmanyte might have, and if not, which deity would better suit my character?

Well met Rotox. I think this concept is fine and as you will be a rogue not a cleric, you have even more freedom to interpret Oghma's teaching. If you read some more about Oghma's teaching even better but I think you could do with your concept (I would suggest not to lie - it should be interesting change in rogue stereotype). |

The awesome thing about Oghma is that he goes well with pretty much any alignment, in 3.5 his worshiper alignment covers all of the alignments. You could totally follow this concept, so long as you're not destroying knowledge (this is the only no-no for an Oghmanite), and yes that includes the corrupt government's propaganda, if it's written down you study it, you don't burn it, ever. |

That's a pretty cool character concept. Makes me feel like someone has statted up Edward Snowden. |

I have something of a similar NPC, but she's a Deneirrath rather than an Oghmanyte. She is a mage-priest of Deneir (in 2e, was dual class, in 3e, mystic theurge/fochlucan lyrist combo using some Deneirran shenanigans to learn the druidic language and mixing wizard (diviner), bard, cleric). Anyway, she works in Waterdeep amongst the social elite, finding out their secrets and then revealing them to commonfolk in a free paper that she prints with her own press, shaming nobles sometimes into cleaning up their acts. |
