...I'm not sure whether this information has been discussed here in this section of the library (it's not an area that I visit often), but while visiting R. A. Salvatore's website the other day, I came across this little tidbit -
quote: New Forgotten Realms game in development at Stormfront studios featuring R.A. Salvatore. Here is what was written in Playstation magazine: "So you want to get your Dungeons and Dragons on, but you don't have a group of fellow antisocialites handy and you're not too keen on the top-down, hack-n-slash experience of the Baldur's Gates of the world. You're in luck: Forgotten Realms is a straightforward beat-em-up -- combos and all -- that's solidly grounded in the D&D rule book. Based on The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers' engine (also developed by Stormfront), the game replaces the Tolkien-via-Jackson plot with a story by best-selling author R.A. Salvatore. There's also a heavy emphasis on party play: To get through the toughest levels, you need to switch among your three characters - a fighter, a rogue, and a sorcerer - on the fly. No word yet on multiplayer, but we're hoping for some."
Does anyone have anything more on this? The news I posted here is at least five days old...

I had heard earlier this year about a new game, simply entitled "Forgotten Realms".
I sure hope that its not a Playstation exclusive title and will be out on XBox too..... i may be a stickler for buying anything with an FR logo on but it would be a bit overboard to buy a PS2 just to be able to purchase and play an FR game!
Ack, go on then, youve twisted my arm! |

Kind of old news. I saw a trailer; am not impressed, but then, I'm not a fan of beat-em-ups and, as a rule, don't touch consoles. |

I'm not fond of the idea behind this game either, I was just hoping someone here had a little more information, so that I could get a better idea about where this project was heading...
Oh well... I don't have a Playstation anyway, so I guess the point is really moot...

Check it out, and remember to bring your comments back here for discussion...
Ya JUST beat me to it, Sage, ive just copied to URL to bring it over here
Anyway, it looks NICE, very nice!! A damn shame i dont have a PS2 else ill certainly be picking this one up! Ive heard the the LotR game (which the developers of that are working on this game) was pretty good, so hopefully this one will be too. The graphics are very smart, and theres nothing wrong with a good hack 'n' slash every now and then |

It does indeed look good, but I'm not about to purchase a PSII just to play this game. It's my hope that eventually it will make it's way (in some shape or form) to standard PC format...Although, I'd had that same wish for the PSII game Mech Assault, but was sorely disappointed when the news finally come through that it was not to be...

Pff. I've never had the urge to get a Playstation, XBox, Sega, or Nintendo. I'll stay with my computer, thank you very much. |

I'm rather unique in that regard. I've lived with, and experienced every single "computer/gaming console" trend since the earliest Atari 1500 units back in the late 1970's and early 1980's. I've seen the evolution (and used every single model) of the standard IBM machine, from the first 86DX models right on up to today's mighty Giga-Hertz monster-machines - I even once had the opportunity to play around with several derivatives of the very old PDP 10 processor systems.
As someone who has also seen the evolution of the Windows GUI - from it's earliest days as the monochrome Windows Ver 1.1 to today's XP series - all I can say is, that I've been very appreciative to have had the opportunity to experience this remarkable rise of technology...

Yay PC!
Really, I don't despise consoles (although console RPGs, from what I've seen of their PC ports, are not exactly my cup of tea. FFVII and FFVIII, for instance). I simply don't have the time nor the desire to get another television. My family'd kill me if I were to monopolize the one near the dinner table. On the other hand, the computers -- all three of them, plus a laptop -- are mine and mine alone. |

And it ain't over yet. That recent cover article in Scientific American got me pretty excited about continuing evolution of computer technologies. |

Unfortunately, that article was pretty technical (for an SA article), so I can't actually do it (or the excellent way it was written) justice here without a) violating copyright laws (possibly) and b) irritating Alaundo (most certainly).
(I certainly can't seem to do it without parenthetical remarks (even when they're unnecessary).)
Perhaps I should do this. When I showed the article to my father (who is as close to a technophiliac as you can get while still being worthy of the term "Scrooge"), I pointed out a photo of a working prototype color moniter that measured (if I remember this right) 18cm on the diagonal, but 1.4mm thick.
Quoth the senior dragon: "One-point-four milimeters? That's not a computer screen, that's a piece of paper!" |

Extraordinary...
I've kept up with most of the latest research on light-emitting organic materials being incorporated into electronic displays, but obviously I've missed this. I'm assuming it's in the February issue of SA, which I've yet to pick up...?

Technically, it's organic light-emitting displays, so that they can just call them OLEDs. As different from PLEDs, which are the LEDs in our PDAs and such.
I think that the February issue sounds right. I seem to have misplaced it (oh, like that's a surprise), but I think I got it around the right time. Of course, since they typically arrive a month ahead of the printed date, I don't usually pay attention to when they're supposed to come out. (Only on my astronomical magazines, so I can find out when things are happening.) |

Le sigh. I really hate the direction that Forgotten Realms is going in. Hack-n-slash is not role playing. I just cant get over it. I'm finally coming down from my Faerun obsession so it's not really bothering me any more and I've broadened my horizons on gaming. |

I know. I loved the link promoting this game. Hack-n-slash was so enthusiastically put forth within it as if it was a unique attribute not found in other games. Nice to know the mentality of computer gamers or at least the ones they are targeting. |

Ive just read a preview in Edge magazine about this game. It looks great, theres a screenshot showing a scene which looks like Khelben Blackstaff battling Yuan-Ti!
Apparently, you have a party of three: Fighter, Thief and Wizard which can be switched between your control throughout the game. Not sure if this will work well or not though.
..still not happy about it being on PS2 only either |

I came across this game whilst surfing the net - my heart practically skipped a beat - behind my back they had been creating a replacement for Baldur's Gate III! Yeah... of course, that isn't the case. Demon Stone appears, at best to be a clone of Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance I, except with a few Drizzt-related characters involved as NPCs because of Salvatore's involvement. It doesn't even seem to equal the moderate Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II. At worst it just goes to show how great a loss a Baldur's Gate III - Jefferson - was. I miss D&D RPGs where you actually have to RP! Or at least ones where there are entertaining sub-plots and character development. I guess they really don't make 'em like they used to! |

Well, sadly all this is a result of the Diablo /Doom generation of games. More emphasis on action / graphics less and less or real gaming options and story. Next level? Simply put in a bigger badder Boss. Sacrifice game rules, story and content as needed. Even NWN with all its flexibility is guilty of this to some extent.
As cheesy as the graphics were the old gold box series (Pool of Radiance, etc) they pretty much nailed the core rules for 1st ed D&D. The shortcoming was the limited number of spells, but that increased over the sequels. BG was a close second, but it never had the 'big' Realms feeling that Pool had when a party traveled overland. Ah the good old days...

From ENWorld:
quote:
Atari announced that Patrick Stewart, Captain Picard of Star Trek and Professor X of X-Men, and Michael Clarke Duncan (Daredevil, The Green Mile) have signed on for major voice roles in the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons-based video game Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone. Fantasy author R.A. Salvatore has also been tapped to write the storyline for the game, which will include the character of Drizzt Do'Urden from the author's popular Dark Elf trilogy.
Following the link for the original press release, I found the following additional details:
quote:
According to Atari, Stewart will play Khelban "Blackstaff" Aunsun, "a wizard of legendary power and wisdom," while Duncan has been cast as he evil Slaad Lord Ygorl, the game's main villain. Demon Stone will be developed by Stormfront Studios, creators of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. The game will allow players to control a fighter, a sorcerer and a rogue while fighting a wide range of fantasy creatures in the Forgotten Realms universe. It is due out for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox this fall.

Hmmmmm id read over at ENWorld some time back that it was out for XBox as well as PS2 but when i checked back on Atari there was no mention at all about an XBox release.
Has this been confirmed officially anywhere? |

Patrick is not who I imagine when I think of Khelben, Picard not withstanding. I wish they'd get the name right-Arunsun, not Aunsun. Also, I'm interested to see how Ygorl is appearing-I'm not seeing Limbo in the tree cosmology, and the Supreme Throne definitely isn't insane enough for that lord. I may be mistaken, but isn't Ygorl unable to speak? |

Maybe they will cast Jonathon Frakes as Laeral. Would that help with seeing Patrick as Khleben?
