This may be a bit out of place, as it's not really "history", but I've misplaced the map with measurements on it...

In the description of Evermeet in the FRCS it says it is something like a thousand miles of the Sword Coast. It also appears on the map that shows trade routes that "Evermeet" is just north of the Moonshaes.

Is this part of the map deliberately not to scale so as to accommodate Evermeet, or is that really 1000 miles?

The map in the FRCS is wrong. Evermeet is to the west of the Moonshae's and I am not sure how they managed to put it to the north, but I guess they did just so they could include it.

Especially since you have to pass the part of the ocean where Evermeet is to get to Maztica. :)

For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

Yes, if I recall correctly I read someplace that portion allowing Evermeet to be seen on the map is not to scale.

Shows you the power of the elves, they even mess up map scales.

If you ever can get ahold of the old, Forgotten Realms Atlas by Karen Wyn Fonstad, it shows in the opening pages a good depiction of Evermeet's location to the rest of Faerun including The Moonshaes. By that product's map scales, Evermeet is over 1,000 miles west from the Moonshaes.

They should have done an inset box for that. I never paid much attention to it, prefering the superior Atlas for all but the things that 3e changed.

Just remember that it has to be a ways away. A thousand miles is suspiciously round -- rather like Herodatus's claim that the Persian army under Xerxes was one million -- but it's about that, give or take a mile or two. Elves like their privacy, and it's far enough out that any non-elven ships in the neighborhood can safely be assumed to be up to no good.

Hell hath no fury like all of Candlekeep rising in defense of one of its own.

Seeing as Steven is posting to old threads, I just can't help myself from copying him.

Mangling Realms geography to fit the size of the map is no new thing. Ed revealed last year:
quote:
This small island realm [Eskember] never made it into the Old Grey Box for the same reason Evermeet got shoved several thousand leagues east (closer to mainland Faerun): accurate maps of my 'home' Realms campaign would have been map panel after map panel ('panel' meaning one fit-the-box folded rectangle of those fold-out map pages) of mostly empty water stretching west, with only a few islets and island chains scattered thereon.

Seeker arilyn742,

If you were to measure from Waterdeep on the Sword Coast to the eastern tip of The Horsefields, east Taltempla on Evermeet, it would be 1,715 miles.

Best regards,
