Queen of the Depths was a fun novel--I hope you both enjoy it (I love ocean life, so...). |

I'm a bit behind on the latest releases. Just twiddling my thumbs for the last part of the half dozen trilogies I'm currently reading. Last Mythal, House of Serpents, Rogue Drangons, Erevis Cale and Scions of Arrabar. Just read Elminster's Daughter.... |

Just finished Shadow's Witness last week and the third Cale novel Midnight's Mask fifteen minutes ago, and it was one of the best novels I have read in awhile.
Now I am on to The Shattered Mask and The Shadow stone or maybe put The Shadow Stone on hold til I buy and finish the rest of the Sembia Series. |

Finished reading Silver Shadows a week ago and now reading Thornhold. It seems interesting, for the relationship between Bronwyn and Danilo, and the discussion between him and Khelben in the alley, finally someones smacks that old wizard! |

Just finished Midnight's Mask, and well - I can recognise that Paul Kemp is a good writer, well above average even for published ones from his prose, but what can I say, I just have trouble getting into "the dark stuff," there's enough of it to be seen in the good old real life as it is. That said, great characterisations, very well carried through plotline, and a nice ending.

I am having a hard time with Silverfall, but I promised someone I'd get through it - so until I get done with it, I can't read some of the other novels on my list.

Ooh...Congratulation Rinonalyrna (you could have used a little less N's in that name you know), while it's not my favourite among Elaine's works, it's still very high up on my list of FR-books. |

Rinonalyrna--an elven-style name.
And yes, I'm enjoying Evermeet so far, even though I've only just cracked it open. |

Anyway you could just help a guy out with a mind dump? I wish I had that long to read all those books. I started back in 1988 as well, but somehow high school and the Army got in the way of reading FR.

What, your CO never gave you time off to read, lol. I have been feeling bad about not being able to get caught up on the late nineties books that I missed (ahem . . . due to the collapse of what could loosely be refered to as "my first marriage"). Besides, if I need to to read my Forgotten Realms novels, I ususally just cut back on my DragonLance reading . . . |

I'm almost half-way through it, Crennen. And yes, I love it so far. By the way, I always liked Eilistraee, but upon reading this book I like her even more. |

I have all the books that Forgotten Realms has published and I only started reading them last year in july when I got hooked on the Making of a Mage. So far I have read all the Drizztes, Cleric Quintet, Elminsters, Shandrils, Moonshaes, War of the Spider Queens, Finder's Stones, Masqurades, Finder's Bane and I'm currently reading Tymora's Luck. I'm trying to read the series as they were pubilshed and it's hard because there are alot of books that I would like to jump to. |
May Tymora smile upon ye |

Finished Thornhold, a great story indeed but too unfair to Algorind the paladin, maybe in the next announced Songs and Swords series novel such injustice is solved? |

Well it's a while since I posted. Over the past few months, i've read:
Master of Chains Queen of the Depths Midnight's Mask Whisper of Waves The Simbul's Gift The Glass Prison
..and i'll be starting Ghostwalker soon.
That leaves me with the following FR backlog:
The Netheril Trilogy The Elminster Series The Maztica Trilogy Pool of Radiance: Attack on Myth Drannor Once Around the Realms Murder in Cormyr Murder in Halruua
Any recommendations as to the order of reading these? |

Yes. When you do the trilogies, read the first book first, the second one second, and then the third book last. It's my preferred way of reading a trilogy. |

I would leave Once Around the Realms until last. While it does feature the fanciful Volo, the tale itself can be weak at times and offers little true entertainment -- well at least that's how it felt to me .
That being said, I'd move onto the "Elminster Series" next...

Hmmm... I do sort of envy the guys who started in 1988. I have well and truly come late to the party. I started reading about three years ago with Realms of the Deep (I know, that's kind of strange, but it seemed less threatening than something that says 'Book 1 of 5' on it or something. The more observant among you will have noticed that I failed to spot that Realms of the Deep actually tied in to one of those afore-mentioned multi-part series) before progressing to Elaine Cunningham's Counsellors and Kings, which was fantastic, quite frankly, and hooked me on Realms fiction in such a way that I can't ever imagine leaving them.
Since then, I've bought the new stuff whenever I can and have tracked down some of the older titles on eBay. This means that my Realms reading pattern is somewhat chaotic. For example, I finished Azure Bonds a couple of days ago and have just started Master of Chains. Whole series I've managed to complete are:
The Avatars (all five - the last two are considerably better than the original trilogy) Starlight and Shadows - words cannot quite express how wonderful this trilogy is - despite some poor proofreading in the final book The Sembia series - so impressed I wrote reviews of a couple of them on the main site The Moonshae trilogy - three good page-turners, but perhaps lacking in subtlety compared with some of the more modern stuff Threat From The Sea - I've seen this slated by some fans, but I rather liked it The first three Elminster books The Cormyr series - fab, fab and fab again! Delicious interweaving of Realms history and the kind of high-octane action that really does deserve to make it to the big screen.
So, you can see I've still got a lot to get through. I think I've got about half of the Realms books out there, but I'm nowhere near reading them all yet.
And do you know what? I kind of like that...
Yours,
JDD

Lord Rad, I'd read the Elminster Series next. That series can be read in just about any order you want, as well.
Dunsany, I wouldn't worry about having started late. I started "late in the game" myself (hey, back in 1988, I was 7 years old anyway!), about 5 years ago. Also, I don't think reading order is all that important--I pretty much read what I want, when I want, but lately I've tried to read the newer books as soon as they are released. |

That is a good point.
I, even now, sometimes envy new readers who are still discovering the Realms for the first time through the novels. It's a magical experience, moreso now when you consider how many novels are currently in print and waiting to be read, compared to the time when some of us actually started reading them (like myself for example, who was immediately hooked after Darkwalker on Moonshae in 1986/87). We had to wait patiently (and oftentimes impatiently) for each and every new FR novel release.

Yeah, its funny you mention that Sage. I know now I look at all the FR books out and think about how I will fit them all in, and back them I remember reading Darkwalker on Moonshae and The Crystal Shard and wondering when another book would finally come out. And trust me, reading the old Greyhawk novels was not really a consolation . . . |
