Can anybody reproduce the fluffy text from Dragon 388?

Love is a lie. Only hate endures. Light is blinding. Only in darkness do we see clearly.
"Oh, you think darkness is your ally? You merely adopted the dark. I was born in it, molded by it. I didn't see the light until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but.. blinding. The shadows betray you because they belong to me." - Bane The Dark Knight Rises

I am trying to find the mechanics of Dragonfear for 3.5. A quick perusal through Races of Dragon, Dragon Magic, Dragons of Faerun and the Draconomicon yields surprisingly little. Where would you direct me to learn more of this unique ability?
I was able to glean a little from the MM, Dragon; General, but it was pretty concise. Maybe Dragonlance took it a little further? |

Frightened, Shaken, Panicked is that all there is to fear effects in 3.5? |

Yes. Is there something else you have in mind that you think should be there instead? Do you feel that those three conditions are inadequate? |

Its important to remember the conditions stack. A shaken creature that fails a save vs a (similar or weaker) fear effect raises its state of fear to frightened. A frightened one becomes panicked one a failed save. An encounter is very easily escalated when the fear condition is spread liberally.
Dragonfear is based on fightfull presence, and its effect can escalate very easily as it can effect a creature within the dragonfears (shortish) range multiple times. The ability is triggered by the dragons dramatic actions, so each time the dragon breathes fire, attacks or flies overhead, the effected creatures need to test against it, going from shaken to frightened to panicked. An adult dragon in an ambush that manages to breath on a surprise round, flies overhead and attacks on landing on its initiative has already triggered its dragonfear ability three times, enough to reach the strongest form of fear in its opponents before they have responded.
Edit: Sp. And corrected some misinformation (the effect doesn't trigger on roars for dragons, would have been awesome though) >< |

2e was a wonderful time for options. I fondly recall when no two tieflings or extra-planar genasi were quite the same, before they were all homogonized. I wonder if anybody remembers half-dragons or dragon-blooded individuals getting a similar treatment, maybe in Dungeon or Dragon? Wings, tails, armor, claws, breath weapon, fear, size, strength, resistances, sorcerous ability, etc. Is there a chart somewhere listing the varied options available to those of a draconic heritage. |

I think dropping everything and running away counts as "scared to death" ...But if you mean that they literally died of fright, then no there is nothing that extreme. |

3e was just as divisive. The 3.5 Monster Manual has the half-dragon template. there is no rule or chart describing appearance, but only a size Large or larger half-dragon has wings. |

4e tieflings all looked the exact same, and bred true. I cannot comment on Genasi though. |

Fellfire, you're thinking of the half-dragons first introduced in Council of Wyrms, and then reprinted and expanded in Dragon #206. Fairly standard physical descriptions, with variable powers that the player could pick and choose from. I never played with one, but it looked like an interesting way of going about it. Still no wings, though. |
Doggedly converting 3e back to what D&D should be... Sigh... And now 4e as well. |

I knew there had to be one out there. Thanx Hoondatha. I'll dig up 206, not sure I've still got CoW. |

Or you can use the file still squirreled away in a forgotten corner of the WotC site -- pretty sure this is the same as what's in the magazine.

(I was a huge fan of the 2E half-dragons, and dropped a trio of them in Waterdeep. Got to dust them off, sometime, when I've got more than just names for them... It took me a few minutes and some creative google-fu to find that article) |

Thanx, Wooly. An interesting article, to be sure. But it seemed to say a lot while explaining nothing. I will, of course, cross check it against the previously listed sources. That article was really a waste of a couple pages and a couple thousand words. |

How izit, Wooly, you are able to find the goods on the WotC site when they remain hidden to us mere mortals? I am beginning to believe you may be a ''wootsey'' sleeper.

Previous stuff I've found by starting with one URL and playing with it until I found what I was looking for... This one, I searched the thumb drive that semi-permanently resides on my work computer, found the file, and googled the name of the file, with "site:wizards.com" as part of the search parameters. It was one of two hits.
Until I saw the formatting of the file on my thumb drive, I thought I'd made my own Word doc from the magazine article -- I've done that with some other stuff.
I've not been able to find everything on the WotC site -- in particular, I've not been able to locate the old, previously free downloads. And some of their articles have been shuffled around so much that it's easier to use the Internet Wayback Machine, as opposed to trying to find the current location. It's one of the reason I have issues with their web folks -- there are things on the WotC site that have been moved multiple times, and usually with no apparent reasoning. |
