Which one was that Ashe? If you're talking about the alternate view of what happened in the Realms of War short story "Redemption", I do have that one and could email you. If it's something else, then we'd have to start begging Elaine for a private viewing... |

I'm not sure what Ashe is referring to, but I think you're right about the alternate POV on the "Redemption" short story. If you have it, please don't post it anywhere. I would prefer that you not pass it around in any fashion.
I take confidentiality very seriously, and I firmly believe that continuity is nearly impossible to maintain if freelancers post speculation and extrapolations of published lore, never mind unsanctioned fiction. I blame this momentary and unfortunate lapse on faulty mental filing: this was an out-take from an unpublished work, but it followed events in a published story and thus didn't add anything new to the lore. This didn't seem to fit any of the catagories I'd set up in my internal NDA files. But it didn't take more than a few minutes for my brain to reconfigure and add a few file for All Stuff That Ends Up on the Cutting Room Floor. Down came the except. Let's please let it stay down.

I apologize, Elaine. I was merely kicking myself for not getting the story. I didn't mean to encourage distribution.
My thanks, Kyrene for the offer, but the story shall remain as it is: in my memmory. Happily. |

Indeed. Elaine and I spoke of this privately shortly after the posting of said excerpt.
It's more appropriate for all involved that we simply respect Elaine's wishes and see that such material is not routinely distributed across the web.
Thank you.

Rest assured, Elaine, that it shall remain confidential until you have given express permission to the contrary. I too value discretion. I am glad I did manage to make a copy of it though, as it allowed me to format it similarly to the print setting in that anthology, print it out to size and slot it in between the end of your story and the start of Mel Odom’s one.
Heh, so, Ashe, if ever you find yourself in South-Africa, look me up and I’ll let you read it again... |

Hi, Kyrene. I don't believe I received the email (or perhaps I didn't associate it with your Candlekeep user name.) Try again at elainecunningham(at)cox(dot)net. Or if you prefer, you can leave me a private message. I didn't realize that this function was disabled, but I changed the settings and PM is now up and running. |

Elaine, you wouldn't happen to know the ISB-number for The Phantom Queen? It tends to be a lot easier to find non-Swedish titles on the webshop I use if I have that (because their search engine is ruddy useless) - especially with books that haven't been published yet. |

I checked the publisher's website but couldn't find the ISBN. When I find it, I'll post it here.
Oddly enough, the publisher, Morrigan Books, is located in Sweden. If you touch base with Mark Deniz, I'm sure he can tell you where you might find the anthology. Their website URL is, predictably enough, www.morriganbooks.com.
One more thing: It was originally scheduled for a Halloween release, but some trouble with the printers pushed it back to December I. |

Thanks a lot Elaine, much appreciated.
And yeah, I'd never have guessed the Sweden-connection, at least not based on the name. Small world and all that. |

Oops, I appear to be just getting to grips with this, hence the reply with no text in
In answer to the question regarding the ISBN for The Phantom Queen Awakes I can let you know that here:
ISBN: 978-91-977605-9-1
All but the last two numbers are Morrigan Books own numbers (in case you weren't aware of the system and in case you needed more)
Thanks again,

That's. . . not exactly accurate.
I popped into the Wizards forum because my name was mentioned in a thread about Paul Kemp, who recently ended his relationship with WotC. From the tone of the discussion, it was clear that people thought I had done the same. I posted on the thread to point out that I have never stated or implied that I would not write in the Realms again. My online position has always been "never say never." IMO, it's usually best to keep options open and bridges unburned.
So, yeah. Rumors of my death are somewhat exaggerated.

I have a question for you, asked Eric too, so.... would you ever consider using a mimic in a novel disguised as a ghost or abandoned ship?? |
why is being a wizard like being a drow? both are likely to find a dagger in the back from a rival or one looking to further his own goals, fame and power

I guess I SHOULD HAVE cross posted your quote from the Wizards forums Elaine.
Just fixed said post... |
"These things also I have observed: that knowledge of our world is to be nurtured like a precious flower, for it is the most precious thing we have. Wherefore guard the word written and heed words unwritten and set them down ere they fade . . . Learn then, well, the arts of reading, writing, and listening true, and they will lead you to the greatest art of all: understanding." Alaundo of Candlekeep |

It never occurred to me, no. Offhand, it doesn't sound like the sort of scenary I would write well. I'm sure there are writers who could take this idea and make it sing, but I'm too squidged out by the image of walking around inside a shapeshifting living creature.
But now that you mention it, I'm beset by a visid mental image of the crew of "Firefly" walking around, checking things out, and muttering in Chinese when the "ship" gets a case of the hiccoughs.... |

I didn’t know you were a browncoat. Have you worked on in the Serenity RPG setting? |
I hope Candlekeep continues to be the friendly forum of fellow Realms-lovers that it has always been, as we all go through this together. If you don’t want to move to the “new” Realms, that doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with either you or the “old” Realms. Goodness knows Candlekeep, and the hearts of its scribes, are both big enough to accommodate both. If we want them to be. (Strikes dramatic pose, raises sword to gleam in the sunset, and hopes breeches won’t fall down.) Enough for now. The Realms lives! I have spoken! Ale and light wines half price, served by a smiling Storm Silverhand fetchingly clad in thigh-high boots and naught else! Ahem . . So saith Ed. <snip> love to all, THO

In all candor, I wasn't aware that there WAS a Serenity RPG setting. I watched the movie when it came out, but I just started watching Firefly on DVD last week. Three more episodes to go--I'm spacing them out to make the experience last longer. |

The RPG is well worth the purchase, and functions also, as a practical guide to the television series and film.

The 'neatest' thing I noticed about the Serenity RPG was the '5x5x5' character creation option. Each player is asked if they can think of 5 friends, 5 acquaintances and 5 'enemies' to build a bit of depth to the character. Something I've tried to implement in other games as well. |

I have a hard time getting my players to come up with 1 friend, family member, acquaintance OR enemy. Tis frustrating sometimes. |

I'm not as sure about coming up with 5 enemies, but I like the idea of coming up with acquaintances and friends. It adds background to the character, and gives fodder for DM plots. If the PCs can't come up with something, the DM can always provide some rough template type characters, let the player pick, and then fill them out as you need them. |

Hello! One of my favorite characters that you write about is Elaith, and I was curious if you could maybe give an estimate about how old he is, please. I've never been able to find anything that gave an idea of his age or Kymil's, and if you're free to talk about such things, I'd really like to know if you have the time. Thank you! |

Also, Death of a Darkklord might be my favorite Ravenloft novel. Did you enjoy writing in that setting? |

Hi, Penknight.
I don't have a specific age for either Kymil or Elaith, but at the end of the 3.5 era Kymil was several hundred years old, and Elaith not much younger. I hesitate to give specific numbers because elven lifespans tend to change with the various editions. What would have been accepted without comment in second edition might raise a few eyebrows in the era of 4E.
In general terms, you can think of Kymil as the elven equivalent of a very fit 50-year-old human, and Elaith perhaps 5-10 years younger.
Hope this helps! |
