Well, Realms orcs (and perhaps also drow, though to a lesser extent) have been reshaped by WoW concepts ... I suppose it‘s only a matter of time before a few mages get moogle familiars.

Interesting that D&D (along with Tolkien) provided the formative blocks of the modern fantasy gaming genre, but now D&D draws inspiration from things which were themselves inspired by other works inspired by D&D several orders removed. It seems to me that fantasy ideas are now so commonplace that they are no longer fantastic, what engages people the most is the “rules“ defining how a fantasy system works.

Monty Python playstyle can be just as fun as Monty Cook, Monty Haul, Monty Hall, Monty Carlo, or Montezuma. But I personally draw the line at cutesy anime beasts.
