Just a little curious...
What was the first FR novel you read? Did you like it/not like it?
Was it the one which got you hooked on FR? If not then what was the one?

Well the first novel I read was Darkwalker on Moonshae, I loved it! But I dont think it was the one which got me hooked into FR. I think maybe one of the Harpers novels got me hooked... cant remember which one though. |

| I bought Azure Bonds, Pool of Radiance, and Spellfire all at the same time. I think I read them in that order, also. I'm not sure if any of them really hooked me, but I'm still buying and still reading. |

| The Crystal Shard was mine, but it was the whole idea of immersing myself in the Realms that got me hooked. I wanted to DM FR, and I knew that the novels were the best method for understanding the Realms and its people and places. You can learn about the Realms through sourcebooks, but you haven't visited the Realms until you've cracked open one of the novels. |

My first FR novel was also "Darkwalker on Moonshae", and at first read I hated it ... though my reasoning was more for the fact that it skewed what my established "vision" of the 'Realms had been at the time rather than any sort of bad writing. I just didn't realize, I suppose, that the 'Realms were so historically and geographically influenced---though with gods like Tyr and Mielikki hanging around, I suppose I was just being naieve.
But don't get me started on the "Maztica" series.
On second reading, five years later, I liked "Darkwalker" much more.
My second was "The Crystal Shard", which I devoured. Then "Azure Bonds".

As was mine... I remember picking up a copy of Darkwalker on Moonshae only a week after it had been released and thinking...'Hmmm, this looks interesting'. At the time, I was just starting out on DL (and was hooked immediately I might add  ) so any TSR fantasy novel was bound to attract my interest.
However it was not the novel that 'hooked' me onto FR. That was to happen a little later when Spellfire was finally released in it's original format. That was when the Realms suddenly began to occupy an equal reading place with the DL novels I had also been reading at the time.

My first FR novels that I read were of course the Drizzt books and then I moved on to the Elminster series. After that I got to a few of the books in the WotSQ and the Song and Sword series. The latest FR books that I bought were The Lone Drow and also all five of the Avatar series. I haven't bought any new books since like December...  |

| Spellfire or Elminster: the making... Can't remember which one, it is a lot of years ago. I do remember I read it in danish (my first language) but I quickly went over to reading them in english. |

Well, I hated Avatars, and I read it in English. Fortunately I read it a couple of years after I got into FR, so I could just move on to better stuff and not worry about it ruining my like of FR.
My first was Spellfire, I think, and I loved it. Unfortunately, I can't really tell you much about my early reading habits (which books I picked up and when), because my memory's so bad I can barely remember lectures two weeks ago. I'm just grateful I got into it. |
Doggedly converting 3e back to what D&D should be...
Sigh... And now 4e as well. |

Well all the FR-novels that was translated into danish was lacking.
One of the things I didn't like about the translations is that they chopped up the novel in more than one volume (paired with the fact that book prices in Denmark are sky high...)!
Thankfully, it is easy to find all of the novels in english as well here in Denmark. |

| The one that started it for me oddly enough wasnt a realms book, it was the Legend of Huma by Richard A. Knack, to this day my all time favorite fantasy book. Because of it I took a look at the other TSR books my dad had and picked up The Crystal Shard and that got me hooked into the realms, followed by Spellfire that is. |

Hi Rad, been busy elsewhere have we? Darkwalker on Moonshae? I can definitely say that I did not enjoy reading that one. I got as far as chapter one of the first book.
I can't definitely say what was my first FR novel, since at the time I was discovering the joys of reading. I've got a fuzzy memory as well which doesn't help and I've devoured many texts over the years since I first picked up a book. But I'd have to say that either the Flinder's Stone triology or Spellfire or one of the Drizzt's novels was my first one and I loved them all. |

Ah, the Legend of Huma...a very good novel indeed, and the second DL novel that I had read. Tell me, have you looked into the newly released comic adaptation yet...?

But I cant wait till I finally see a copy and read it, it will be interesting to see if they drew Huma right as well as keep to the original story. It would be a shame to waste such a great character. I think that is the only novel I have read eight times. I dont know what it is about that book but drew me in and hooked me right away. |

There's a lot of discussion, and some preview artwork on the "Legend of Huma" thread on the Dragonlance boards at WotC. You'd probably be better of asking any questions there, since a number of the writers and artists visit there semi-regularly to answer questions and the like...

The first FR novel I ever read was 'Crucible: The trial of Cyric the mad'. Unfortunately, it pretty much ruined the story of the previous four novels in the series (which I never got around to reading until years later).
The first thing that introduced me to the Forgotten Realms was the original Pool of Radiance computer RPG way back when I was just a six or seven-year-old with a Commodore 64.
But what really got me into FR was the computer RPG 'Menzoberranzan' (the one where you get Drizzt in your party and hack your way into the Underdark). |

My thanks Sage for that, I guess I owe you one for the info there.
You know not until recently did I play any of the forgotten realms or D&D stuff on computers or systems, though didnt get a system till NES. Talk about trying to convince parents of letting a kid with epilepsy have a gaming system, not easy, plus my mom believed in that whole D&D is devil worshipping. Luckily enough I had a great dad, who got me the gaming system, also introduced me to forgotten realms, let me play magic the gathering and secretly took me to play D&D with friends, boy did he catch hell when my mom found my character sheet. Great guy I owe him a lot.
Though also wanted to add in this, the one series that clenched me coming back for more was the shadow of the avatar series, I was hooked on the realms but that made me want to buy every single book in the line.
