Hello All,

Are there any canon sources that talk about sailing on the Wyvernwater in Cormyr in detail? Something that discusses wind patters, types of boats used and the like?

I'm re-reading Volo's Guide to Cormyr, but I'm just not finding the information I'm after.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'd say this is one for the "Ask Ed" pile. I dimly recall Ed running an adventure at an early GenCon (which I couldn't get a chance to take part in ) that involved ships on the Wyvernwater...rowed dinghys with nets, lateen-sailed sloops, if I remember correctly. Lots of reed-beds at the "wild" eastern end of the Wyvernwater, and I remember there were fisherfolk in Immersea.

Okay i have found a few things that may be of use, unfortunately i never bother to catalogue sources, occasionally i note whether its 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or candlekeep lore.

First is this paragraph about Wheloon

quote:
Wheloon began as a small settlement serving a ferry over Wyvernwater. As traffic increased along the road between Cormyr and Sembia, the ferry became heavily used, boosting the town’s economy.
Today, the ferry is still an important part of the economy, but the town’s craftsmen generate more income. Boat makers, basket weavers, sail makers, and potters all live in Wheloon, and their business attracts many customers from Cormyr and Sembia.

So it looks like Wheloon has a ferry sailing the wyvernwater, probably not ferries as we know it now, more like a flat skiff that can be poled across or with a single sail.

The next is a piece about Hultail, probably from Volo's guide or the Cormyr sourcebook

quote:
This village of 360-odd folk is the largest port on the Wyvernwater. It is the home of the Trindar Shipyards, where almost all of the vessels that ply the vast Wyvernwater are made. (This water route has long been the best way to enter or leave Cormyr unseen.)

If Hultail has a shipyard then there must be quite a demand for boats and so traffic must be at least constant so i would guess that you will always run into at least one other boat while sailing the wyvernwater on any journey.

It also looks like the wyvernwater is one of the means that nefarious people access cormyr (through high dale).

Next is another piece about Hultail again probably from volos guide or the cormyr sourcebook.

quote:
Hultail is both a fishing village and a fish hatchery and it never seems to run out of fish

So it is quite possible that small fishing vessels will be found in the lake.

Next is a piece about the wyvernwater itself and may be from a campaign guide.

quote:
This clean, clear, star shaped lake produces abundant fish, crabs, and eels every year. In the morning the water is covered in a thick fog, and fisherfolk who rise early to fish the lake are known as mistfishers.

So it's misty in the morning and thats when the fishermen are out on the lake (probably to avoid the regular traffic later in the day).

Next i have a quote about immersea and the mistfishers mentioned above.

quote:
A popular attraction in Immersea is the Mist Fishers, a name given to a group of fishermen who go out early in the morning, while there are still mists on the Wyvernwater, and catch fish with draglines and scoop-nets.

Next is a quote about the village of Nesmyth, again probably from a volo's guide or cormyr sourcebook

quote:
the villagers brought in popper crayfish from the Wyvernwater, since the shed shells of these (somewhat) edible creatures dissolve into a glue-like jelly.

So as well as fish they go after crayfish. I have no idea how you catch crayfish, but if they dont populate the shore line then it looks like it would have to be nets mentioned above.

Anyways, hope some of that is what you are looking for. I cant find anything else on the wyvernwater and shipping in my notes and i'm pretty sure i've collected everything in the sourcebooks (not got as far as dragon or dungeon magazines yet though).

It's very much what I'm looking for and I appreciate you taking the time to put it all together.

Again, much appreciated.

Now if only we could get Ed or someone to write a novel with a whole bunch of activity on the Wyvernwater.
