Another option (and it works very well if there are enemies that know your PCs, but can work "by chance") is to arrest from the PCs the control of the battle conditions.
Once one of my PCs "deducted" that trolls would be harmed by fire. I've said none of them have ever met or heard about a troll, and so he cleverly said "let's try using fire against them, it works against witches!" Guess what? They met some trolls a little later, but they fought them under a torrential rain...  |
