Can anyone tell me about the community called Firetrees in Unther? When was it founded? Is it a town or a city?

I got the name off the map (p. 70) in Dragons of Faerūn.

I have this information about Firetrees, from the Old Empires book.

Firetrees (Town, 14,000): This small town is noted for the firetrees, from which it takes its name.
These deciduous trees have red blossoms that shine at night with a natural phosphorescence.
Firetrees is a farming community on the edge of the Greenfields; it has warehouses where grain is stored, as well as facilities to load caravans (the River Alamber is too fast for cargo to be shipped by water). The city holds feasts and festivals where the people of the Greenfields may relax from their labours.
Firetrees is also the center of the cult of Tiamat, the most powerful group in opposition to Gilgeam.
The city’s ruler is Lord Tukulti (10thlevel wizard, in the service of Gilgeam). Tukulti is not a strong ruler; most of the people of Firetrees ignore him and his edicts, or insult them openly.
The population of Firetrees is about 7,000.

Depending on when a campaign is set depends on what the place would be like. Under Gilgeam's rule it would probably be mildly anti Gilgeam. After his death but before Mulhorandi invasion it would probably be openly supporting the Cult of Tiamat.
During the Mulhorandi invasion it could be either pro Tiamat/Unther, or pro Mulhorand, up to you.

How is the population both 7k and 14k?

Either it's a typo (from me or the sourcebook) or I probably took the demographic from a 3rd edition book and the rest of the info came from old empires.

Old Empires shows the population at 7k, I can't seem to find any updated info on the town (I've checked the CG for both 3e & 4e and the FR wiki). It's an interesting location and an update would be nice...though I'm not sure it still exists in 4e.

Old Empires details the place prior to the Time of Troubles, mostly what dazzlerdal said, plus a bit more about Tukulti, and Tiglath the high priestess of Tiamat. An incarnation of Tiamat also lived there. The population is indeed 7000.
