 How can i plan a attack/sabotage on Silverymoon?

Hi everyone,

First of all, sorry for my english long time since i wrote it.

Recently i returned to gm a campaign which focus on Silver Marches. As first ark i'd like to run adventures on silverymoon city. My problem is: the dammit mythal blocks everything, specially evil npcs from acting there.

So, how can i build some adventures involving evil agents trying to infiltrate on silverymoon or maybe disable the mythal? Some ideas?

Evil agents could hire Neutral Mercenaries to do the work for them.

OR...if you really want to be sneaky; the evil agents could hire neutral mercenaries who trick GOOD people into doing work for them.

The Old Grey Box and AD&D for me!

Hmmm this could be a idea, but in general terms no evil npc can live in silverymoon? No evil phantom can raise on the magic schools there? I think this is kinda boring...

If this mythal trait upsets you or hinders your game, just ignore it.

Or if you really want to stick with the official lore, gave to the evil NPC's some kind of magic item that masks their aligments. In this way, the mythal would not perceived them as evil.

What era are you doing this in? In 2E, Silverymoon didn't have a mythal...

I'm in 3E. How can silverymoon be afraid of a attack of Obould or other enemies if they have the mythal with all that protections? I'd like to understand how could some force be a threat to Silverymoon.

Well, for one thing, you don't have to enter a city to threaten it. Siege weapons can do a fair amount of damage... And being that it's a city, you could also starve it out -- if you burn all the farms and/or prevent goods from entering the city, they're going to lose a lot of people unless they resort to magic. And if they do resort to magic to keep the population fed, that's magic that's not being used against attackers.

Also, I'm pretty sure there isn't a restriction on evil people entering the city... As I recall, a formerly good NPC that lived there was retconned into evil.

Besides, just because someone is evil, that doesn't mean they intend to harm people in the city. With the Silvaraen love of freedom and all, I don't see them being that discriminating.

Unfortunately, I don't have my Silver Marches book handy...

Unfortunately on silver marches says the Mythal cast a antipathy spell that affects evil creatures =(

I understand all these points and certainly give me some ideas. I think i'll use this npc called chameleon to try disable the mythal and on the future i'm pretending to take some war to silvery moon.

Right, it effects evil CREATURES. IIRC there is no specific alignment restriction. The description of the mythal merely states that it keeps out all evil-intentioned goblinkind, giants, trolls, orcs, drow, etc etc. There ARE evil aligned humans and other NPCs that live in Silverymoon. Xara Tantlor being one example.

The Mythal does pose some challenges, but assuming you don't want to ignore it's existence, it should be possible to work around it. The Antipathy doesn't affece every creature with an Evil alignment, only a number of specific races, as well as summoned evil creatures. Neutral creatures are thus unaffected, as is creatures of other races than the ones mentioned. Humans and Dobbelgangers ought to be able to bypass the Antipathy and Protection from Evil effects. As mentioned earlier, sieges and siege weapons won't be affected by the Mythal, nor should an army of humans or human mercenaries be.
People trying to mess with the city through political means would also be able to operate in the city, though they would likely have to stay outside of the area with the permanent Zone of Truth, and similarly they would be hard pressed, if going directly up against Alustriel on the political scene. But things can be done. Zhentarim agents trying to screw with the city's business. Someone trying to poison the water supply. Someone bringing naturally diseased rats or other natural creature into the city and releasing them.
Brute force attacks and overt violence and the like within the city is probably going to be a problem, but if you are creative and subtile enough, you should be able to find some workarounds concerning the Mythal effects. Though I'll grant you that they are a little annoying, even if they bring a certain unique flavour to the city.

On a related note concerning the Mythal and the various spell effects it creates. Can anyone tell me what the save DC's are for these different spells? Maybe I'm just missing it somewhere, but I don't recall seeing any information on this issue in The Silver Marches where they detail the effects of the Mythal.

an army of humans wouldn't be effected by the mythal, neither would vermin (verminlord). A neutral agent placing poison could be an angle but that's very obvious and I'm sure there are magical safeguards in place.

"evil-intentioned" by itself could be a work around. Freedom fighters are good, though from time to time do evil acts. Insurrectionists are Evil people, even if they do good.

The random Drow seeking to rescue another, has no Evil intent as such. Just seeking to free a captive. There is no intent on causing Evil, however clearly would defend self while on a rescue mission.

Have a "just cause" and you might be able to fill the city with Evil races. It though clearly comes to the DM to decide if "evil-intentioned" have entered and thus should be effected by the mythal.

I see now that you plan to operate in the 3E.

But my initial thought was that it would probably be very effective to time travel to the precise day that Alustriel died in 4E, when chaos must've reigned supreme, and strike Silverymoon right then. Kick 'em when they're down!

Great ideas guys!!! I loved the natural diseased rats and the poisoned water suply. This is the kind of "problem"/adventure i'm looking to give some troubles to the pcs.

Another method would be to use the Mythal as the plot. The town is attacked, but the Mythal doesn't work (enough) to ward of the attackers. You can run an entire campaign revolving around the issue with increasing attacks (for example, first, the attackers need magic items to assist them in resisting the Mythal's effects and only weak creatures (with lesser taint of evil) can pass, but as the Mythal's power wanes away they don't need any more items and more powerful creatures can enter, wreaking havoc on the innocent population). You can take out the mighty NPCs (Lady Alustriel etc) by either letting them follow the fate of the Mythal (becoming sick and eventually die when the Mythal finally is completely destroyed) or by letting them continuously "repair" the Mythal to slow down its destruction. This way the work to investigate the reasons and destroy the evil mastermind behind this plot is left for the PCs.

I've lost track of recent realmslore, since my campaigns are still in the 1370ies. :-)
