Okay, so I am looking at my own Old Empires map, and I am specifically examining the region around the Bay of Chessenta and I see a town named 'Maerior' - anyone know where this is from? I've checked all the most obvious map sources (from every edition). My only assumption has to be its something that just appeared in text somewhere.

I also had some trouble finding Ursuma, until a dim recollection of an online article and some halflings jogged my memory.

Maerior came from the wizards forum, in 2008, from someone giving you info on your map

I thought I did The Vast.

I'll have to check on that...

Also, let me know whenever you see something missing (or mispelled) - they are very easy to edit, and I'd prefer to have as much accuracy as possible. (so tell me what was missing from the Old Empires).

You did a good one of Impiltur that included a fair bit of the Vast, but it missed a few locations from City Of Ravens Bluff. Your Old Empires map finally included those pesky Blade Kingdoms, but missed a few small places from Chessenta (Thamol and Maerior, which is hardly on any maps) and several from Unther. I'll PM you later with the details and my thoughts on placement.

Yep, I thought that was me. Now I have to rediscover the place...

On the big map in Old Empires, on the map of Luthcheq, the road leading east out of the city is labelled "to Maerior". That's all that's said of the place, to the best of my knowledge. I suggested its current placement on your map: on the road, at the mouth of the river, equidistant between Luthcheq and Mordulkin (pretty much where you'd expect a settlement to be).

Thanks guys, that was really bothering me. I usually remember when I place Homebrew stuff (which is why I didn't think that was).

Thamol?

Now you've given me a new conundrum.

I should update that map - its missing Tor Mak and Meryn (near Colletra).

Thamol I can't explain. Do you mean Thamor, the city in Threskel? That appears on the Old Empires map and on yours as "Thamon".

I believe the I in Maerior is actually an L. At least it's an L on my FR10 map. Funny, I chalked that up to an editorial glitch when I first read it, and I've missed it on every subsequent look at the map.

Thamol doesn't ring any bells, but Thamor could look like Thamol (or vice versa) in certain fonts...

Also, (insert good-natured roast of Markustay's absentmindedness here)

There is a 'Maerlar' directly east of it, in Mulhorand. I would think that would get rather confusing.

I used to have a near-photographic memory, but as I get older, I find myself becoming.... ummm... normal.

A favorite trick of mine as a kid was to go see a movie with friends, and then afterwards, recite back the ENTIRE MOVIE line-by-line. My nickname was 'the human tape-recorder' (amongst others... some not-so-complimentary). My only 'blind-spot', strangely, is numbers - I can't even recall my own phone number (just ask Brian James - I embarrassingly could not tell him it at Gencon). IF I need to memorize a number, I have to associate it with other things... its just really weird.

The problem is that that ability got me into the habit of NEVER taking notes (I had a college professor get on my case about that even), so now I have to learn to write everything down, which is really annoying. At this rate, I should be drooling and crapping myself in just a few years.

Yup, the existence of Maerlar was the reason I disregarded that reference to Maerlor. But there are other cases around the Realms of similar/identical names being taken by succeeding or maybe even contemporary settlements, so it wouldn't really take much handwaving to say (in a home campaign at least) that Maerlar and Maerlor both exist.

The region south of the Rauthenflow has been increasingly impacted by the Plains of Purple Dust for centuries. The southern portion of Murghom is already largely evacuated. Maerlar isn't in any direct danger but it will not be a crossroads for long. It makes sense for Maerlar's population to fold into Rauthil, and settle the north side of the bridge, and thereby become a crossroads again. Not all of its citizens are going to be interested in that, though. It's very plausible that someone will begin anew. Someone who's discontented with the apathy shown by the church of Horus-Re in allowing the Plains of Purple Dust to doom the town and the southern portion of Murghom. So rather than move to Rauthil or another town in the empire, a couple of families find a plot of land in Chessenta, which is kinda chaotic for their taste but that gives them the freedom to raise their families in peace and they can maintain their own culture, and they set up a few homes and shops. Fast-forward a couple hundred years and you have the town of Maerlor. Perhaps the syllable -lor means "west" in Mulhorandi.

Just babbling, for the eventuality when I come back to this thread in a year or three and mutter to myself (like I did when I first saw the Maerlor reference on the map) that the names are too close and that just wouldn't happen. It totally could.
