Wyrmlings and the such, do they get raised in a family, go off on their own , I guess it all depends on the color of dragon they are, but do we have any sort of info on this stuff?

The 3.5e Draconomicon covers quite a bit of this.

As does the 2e Draconomicon. It has a section on the psychology of all the chromatics and metallics, including their views on childrearing. What happens to the hatchlings of each species is covered.

Doggedly converting 3e back to what D&D should be...
Sigh... And now 4e as well.

Oh, and for a cheekier answer to the OP's title, check out the adventures in the Council of Wyrms set. Sometimes, hatchlings save the world.

They suck on gem encrusted pacifiers whilst lying atop a crib of gold coins.

My experience with a newborn (he's almost two now) was that he did not do nearly as much sleeping as he was advertised to. Still doesn't.

There were two lengthy dragon magazine articles about the behaviour of wyrmlings. Was during 3.x when there still were printed mags

Indeed. That book had quite a bit of good info on wwyrmlings- and every other dragon age category. (See what I did there? LOL!)
