Has anyone read any books that show the drow using this ability? I can see the Darkness and Farie Fire but to summon globes of light that would blind themselves seems kinda foolish. Im removing it from the player that wants to make a Drow but wondering if anyone else has done so and if so, did you substitute another ability? Im thinking adding an additional use of Darkness or Farie fire seems fair without messing the Level Adjustments? Any input?

They don't blind anyone. Disregarding for a moment possibility that 5th ed. followed the good tradition of d20 and power-creeped Dancing Lights all the way to fireballs.  |

Dancing Lights spells are made permanent and set to shine around several buildings in drow cities but otherwise I don't think they do get used by individuals in the books.
Back in second edition, torches, lanterns, light from magic weapons, faerie fire etc. wasn't enough to dazzle a dark elf, though all of those sources and dancing lights (though maybe not faerie fire) definately were in 3rd edition. Since dancing lights didn't increase the power level of drow NPCs too much, they were allowed to keep it in 3.0 whereas they lost their levitate, know alignment, detect magic, detect lie, clairvoyance and dispel magic 1/day abilities. |

The lights in cities, at least per novels and Menzo boxed set, were faerie fire. And yes, back then they weren't dazzled. It was a beauty thing, not a utility spell. |
