Hi All!!
Today I re-red the "bloodstone-Pass" module from Salvatore, and stumbled upon some interesting information about my beloved greenskins.
The entr "Galena Mountains" in "geography" says that "Hundreds of Thousands of Goblinoids and other Monsters are living in the mountain ranges.
Well this seems quite a high number, since the mountainous region is not really in an area where food sources willbe abundant - accoding to Humand understanding.
I know we had a discussion abiout the efficiency of subterran fungi-farms for large populations already.
But, does anyone of you have an Idea / Source of what these extremely high population could live? - for sure not off the few Human farmsteads they occasionally raid.

Stuff like this doesn't really bother me anymore.
Have you ever seen the Asian Steppes? And yet, millions of Mongols not only survived, but thrived there.

Sorry for seemingly annoying you a bit qith repeated questions like that.....
I was ust wondering if there might even be a canon-based explaination of it somewhere ;)
in RW many places like the Asian Steppes exist... |

I would assume they live off of small animals. Rats and other rodents high on the list. |

If this was to me, I wasn't annoyed. Quite the contrary - I don't let this kind of thing 'eat at me' anymore. I used to, but there could be lots of explanations, all of them valid. Sourcebooks just don't cover this sort of thing.
It goes back to the beginning of D&D - I think I was one of the 1st people (back n the 70's) who asked, "what have all these monsters (in the dungeon) been eating?" Back then, DMs just gave you annoyed looks. At that point I would add, "and where do they go to the bathroom?" If you think about it, you should be stepping in some pretty nasty stuff in a dungeon. 
You just got to figure there is some sort of ecosystem going on that we aren't privy to. Hell, if whales can survive on plankton, I'm willing to believe anything. |

I would think large populations in the mountains would have to be getting much of their food from below the surface - fungi farms, maybe some rothe herds, etc. Escapees from drow/duergar slave herds would bring their memory with them, and the shamans would figure out ways to adapt the food sources used by other races to the needs of the tribe.
However, the more intelligent tribes might build/farm terraces and create surface communities that look like Machu Picchu. They will also herd goats and other mountain animals. Humans and other humanoids captured on raids would be food (the tasty-looking ones), slaves (the tough/old/feisty ones), and breeding stock/pets (the young and easily-intimidated ones).
The best combination of strength/cunning/deception rises to the top of any society. When the population of a particular mountain range (no matter how many tribes there are) is hundreds-of-thousands, the leaders can be assumed to be stronger, smarter, and more ruthless than the chief of a random little tribe elsewhere in the Realms.
Just how I would look at it. |

See Ed's "Wyrms of the North" Zundaerazylym write-up for the edible fungi the orcs of the North survive on. I'm sure it's a similar situation for the humanoids of other parts of the Realms.

i had found evidence that other subterranean races sport large fungi gardens, gnome or duergar as in the h-series for the bloodstone series 2nd edition.
but did not know if the goblinoids do the same.
