My assumption based upon what I've heard so far is that the people of Mulhorand and Unther will return. That to me also indicates the return of Set. Given that Okoth WAS a powerhouse of followers of Sarrukh in the service of Set that fell during the spellplague, I wonder if a lot of those Sarrukh didn't just fade over to Abeir. They might have found themselves amidst an empire of dragonborn and/or other reptilian beings (as it seems that Abeir is somewhat dominated with such). So, when the descendants of the Mulhorandi come back, perhaps these Sarrukh come back as well, possibly with servants. Given that Unther is filled with dragonborn at present, any dragonborn that remain might flee to this serpent empire.
I know its not a new idea, but it could breathe some energy into an existing idea that doesn't horribly disrupt the realms and builds on existing storylines. This "Serpent Kingdom" could have sarrukh, wereserpents, werecrocodiles, dragonborn, nagas, and yuan-ti. Moreover, it could be a focus point for the worship of multiple deities (who may not get along mind you) such as Set, Sseth, Tiamat, and perhaps even Gargauth (given the closeness to the fallen kingdom of Peleveran). If they also chose to have a focus on demon and devil binding, using such beings as their fodder and offering up the souls of mammals as sacrifice.... it adds just a little bit of that darkly evil "Stygia" feel from the old Conan books.
With Mulhorand, Chessenta, and Unther to its North (as well as possibly some displaced Imaskari rebuilding elsewhere), this could make for a fun campaign area. With my ideas for a reborn Thay in the Shaar, things could get really interesting with the various power groups allying and turning on each other.

I really like this idea. I can already see a number of campaign and adventure ideas in that region. I particularly like the "Stygian" aspects to how it would/could look there. And I'm all for a return of the sarrukh.
I've thought that, since their "birth" in the lore of the Realms, the sarrukh have been underutilized. I've decided to use one in my current campaign as someone who could be an adversary or ally to my group. |

| the main thing I'd focus on with this type of campaign would be that the sarrukh wouldn't necessarily be seen/known about. They'd also still be few in number. Many might believe that the nagas or the yuan-ti or the dragonborn are running things (and in truth, for the most part, they may be). It wouldn't be a return of the Sarrukh empire so much as a gathering of serpentfolk for mutual gain. In fact, it would be interesting if the Sarrukh themselves were split in the background between worship of Sseth and Set but having agreed to work together despite religious differences (perhaps each even believing the other is falsely worshipping their own deity). |
