Actually, I don't see how this would have anything to do with Paizo's market position. The larger part of sales is going to remain the current content, and Paizo is riding high on that current content, and constantly making more. This may change, long term or short, with the release of 5E.
But that wasn't my point... TSR/WotC pdfs used to be sold thru Paizo -- most of the ones I bought, I bought from Paizo. I had multiple reasons for choosing Paizo, most notably the unlimited downloads and the promise that if any pdfs were updated, a notification would be sent so the new version could be downloaded.
So that's my point: now that WotC pdfs are being sold again, what about the ones I've already paid for? Assuming I didn't have backups (I do have backups; it's just a hypothetical), would I be forced to re-buy pdfs I've already purchased? And will sites like Paizo that used to sell TSR/WotC pdfs be allowed to resume those sales?
Honestly, I think the answers are: yes, I'd have to repurchase, and no, Paizo won't be selling them. I think that's unfortunate, but it's also a purely business decision that I can't fault. I wouldn't like it, but I'd not be able to disagree with it.
Either way, I'd like to see some sort of official yea or nay on those questions.
Bringing back pdfs is good, but I'd like to see more. |

In a perfect world your purchase would be logged onto a billing database and give you access to the product forever. And a company would promise to honour existing contracts even if (when) they change their policies. And they'd fully disclose any license-lease limitations which might affect the customer now or years down the road. And other companies, like Wizbro, would grace customers with benefits promised by third-party companies or other agents.
It's not a perfect world. But Paizo and Wizbro do give away all kinds of freebies, and their people (usually) do make real efforts to understand how they can provide what the RPG community wants.
Wooly ... I've actually had a very similar problem (although about my Nuts & Volts subscription) and simply emailed them with the relevant data and polite explanation of how I understood my original subscription contract. They ultimately apologized but offered a compromise ... not what I really wanted, but much better than what I had before. |

Real-world business practices and a perfect world rarely coincide.
Paizo is awesome for customer service -- the best customer service I've ever had came from them.
But I would expect that whether or not I'll have access to the TSR pdfs I bought from them will depend entirely on WotC. It may be necessary for Paizo to have to re-apply for a license to sell them, and a condition of that license may be ignoring prior sales.
I've got all the pdfs, in at least 4 locations, so it's a moot point -- other than the principle of it.
And I'm pretty sure I did buy some pdfs from drivethrurpg, so it'll be interesting to see how it plays out.
I'll not complain either way, but I will be happier if I have the option of downloading all of my pdfs again. |

Although I am also mildly annoyed that I'll need to pay again for products I already bought. Also annoyed at Gungans, filthy creatures. |

Interesting... Just got an email from DriveThruRPG:
As part of this release, your previous purchase of Grand History of the Realms (3.5) is now available for download with an updated file.
Guess that answers part of my question. Still wanting to know if I'll be able to redownload the other pdfs from Paizo...
The new download is considerably smaller than the prior versions. The original file was 139MB, and the later, smaller file was 41MB. The newest one is 23MB. |

| File optimization is bigger now than it was years ago, better tech and techniques, tablets and mobile devices driving such and all that. I appreciate the efforts to freshen up the files rather than just upload the decade old scans from before. Scanning technology is better. |

Aye. On Hallowed Ground is what I've often said to be the 'Fourth' book of the "Big Deity Three" of Faiths & Avatars, Powers & Pantheons, and Demihuman Deities.
Monster Mythology usually occupies a special 'Fifth Book' place. So it's the "Big Deity Five" for me. |

I've compared the B1 module from www.dndclassics.com vs my original (hardcopy) version and my friend's badly scanned pdf version (of his worn out hardcopy) and another scanned version I obtained for comparison from ... elsewhere.
No contest, the hardcopy wins! And it surprisingly has more vivid colours than the scans, cool. But it was carefully packaged then ignored for many years (lol, decades).
But if I wanted to print the module out then the dndclassics download is certainly the best. It's also complete (the others lacked little things like front/back covers, etc). It's also OCR, indexed, and searchable. The best electronic version available. It's also watermarked and traceable, which to me is both annoying and comforting.
I'm surprised that Wizbro didn't update any of the credits, legal smallprint, trademarks, copyrights, etc. I mean, "(c) 1979, 1981 TSR Hobbies" ... and my local games and hobby store doesn't have the promised B2 or X1 modules! |
