I finished Ex-Heroes yesterday, which I quite enjoyed. Not only did I like all the interactions between the characters and the backstories for the heroes, I also liked the eventual reveal of how the "ex-virus" came to be -- that revelation should prove to have some impact in the next story, Ex-Patriots, which I will be ordering shortly.
Now I'm reading Island of the Sequined Love Nun. I've no idea what I'm going to read after that...
Doing good on my quest to read more new books than re-reads: 26 out of the 38 books I've read this year have been new reads. |

Thanks, and I'm sure I will....though probably not as much as I would if I read them when I was 12.

I'm going to go ahead and order Ex-Patriots; I have a gift card to burn. If it gets here before I finish Island of the Sequined Love Nun, then I'll read it next. Otherwise, The Count of Monte Cristo will be next -- been meaning to read that one for a couple years, now. My late grandmother once tried to get me to read it, but I was like 11 at the time and only interested in Choose Your Own Adventure stuff. |

Well thats true enough. I myself might not have enjoyed the series quite so much if I first read it as an adult ,but its still an entertaining and likable series even for those of a more mature disposition.

My SW reading days are long passed now, but Wraith Squadron novels were some of the most enjoyable and entertaining books I've read (from the SW universe, at least). |

I am still an avid fan but even I must admit that things have been a bit slow lately in the SW universe. Hopefully the upcoming movies will liven things up. Still if you a fan of Wraith squadron then I would recommend you give it a try. If nothing else it will give you some closure on where the various Wraiths end up. Also if you would indulge my curiosity, at what point in the SW series did you stop reading?

I went through Legacy of the Force, but it lost steam to me, and I'll be honest, I wookiepedia'ed the end, just because I was tired of it. I read most of the cliff notes of Fate of the Jedi, but just felt like I was not going to go back to SW anymore. However...! I loved reading Palpatine's tutelage in Darth Plagueis. I began to wonder if I would rather read about pre-Empire tales.
But yeah...I love me Wraith work! |

Island of the Sequined Love Nun kinda drags, at the beginning of the book... But somewhere around the halfway point, it really picked up. I've got only 23 pages left, and I'm eager to get back and finish it.
I'm not as eager to start The Count of Monte Cristo, though... I read all five of the Three Musketeers books, and they didn't really grab me all that much. I'm hoping I'll like this one better. Maybe knowing Ex-Patriots is next on the list will help.
I'm not sure what will be after that. I'm getting bored with reading only new books. |

Oh yeah Legacy of the Force was a very disappointing series. I blame Karen Traviss for a lot of that. Her jedi bashing really went overboard and made it impossible for Jacen to become a good villain. It almost put me off SW as well. |

I'm only about 50 pages in... And I've already noted a major difference from the 2002 movie, which is my only prior exposure to the story. I'm hoping the book and the movie aren't too far apart, like the Three Musketeers movies have been -- I've seen a couple of those, and with only one of them was I convinced that some knowledge of the book was involved in writing the movie. |

So far, not many parallels between the book and the movie... There are some, like how Dantès gets out of Chateau d'If, but not many... I'm still rather enjoying the book, though. I did not expect that! |

I've not seen the 2002 movie, since I know I'd just get annoyed on all the stuff they had to leave out to keep it under 6 hours, so I would at least expect there to be a lot more things in the book.
Sidenote: Try the French mini-series with Gérard Depardieu as the Count, (and his son, Guillaume, as the young Edmond Dantes) if you want a more thorough moving pictures version. |

My old Literature textbook had an anecdote about Dumas.
A lot of his stuff was written with the help of assistants, and one day in his older days one of them walked into his office to find him reading the Three Musketeers. "Is it any good," he asked. Dumas looked up and replied, "it's good, but not as good as that one," and pointed to a copy of the Count of Monte Cristo. |

Ah, the book that contains two of the names that bug me most from the series: Sirius Black and Remus Lupin. The names themselves don't bug me; it's the fact that the names basically describe the characters that really bugs me.
Sirius is the name of one of the stars in the constellation Canis Major (Big Dog) and is referred to as the "Dog Star". Remus was one of the founders of Rome; he and his brother Romulus were, according to Greek mythology, suckled by a she-wolf. And Lupin obviously derives from "lupus"; the genus/species for wolves is "canis lupus".
So the names themselves are fine, but when you have "Dogstar Black" turning into a black dog, or "Guy raised by a wolf Wolf" turning into a werewolf, it's pretty painful -- at least to me. It's like naming a character "Vlad Nosferatu" and then revealing he's a vampire. I don't like names saying that much about the character. |

True. I was not one of those 13 year olds, though. I was a mythology freak, back then.
In one of the latter books, there is a brief appearance by a vampire -- named Sanguini.
Yeah. Not mythological, but still...
I do have to admit, though, that there is one name in the series that comes from a mythological source that I didn't catch: Hermione. I was looking up something about Helen of Troy one day when I discovered that the mythological Hermione was the daughter of Helen and Menelaus. |

Heh. Nothing’s worse than Neville Longbottom. A mean friend of mine once told me he could never look at Neville’s face in the movie without having to imagine the “image” that the last two syllables of his name conjure.
Dumbledore also gets in the list of worst names in the HPverse. |

Quite so! I finished Shadowstorm, and am about halfway through Undead right now. Didn't think the Spellplague would happen this soon in the series; now to watch it play out.
Even with no joy or love, or well, hope in these books, I love the characters so far and where they are trying to go. |
