As commented elsewhere, I'm reading Dune right now, and I don't get why it's such a big deal... For years, I've heard about how this was a really epic book, and how it was such a classic, and how everyone should read it... And I know it was made into a movie, too.
And I'm just not getting it. I'm enjoying the book, but from everything I'd heard, I was expecting a lot more. So far, it just hasn't delivered on the hype or my expectations... It's good, but not great, and not really all that noteworthy.
I guess I should have remembered some of my past experiences with really hyped stuff... I generally find myself quite disappointed in things that get a lot of hype; with or without expectations, I usually just don't find the overly hyped books or movies to be all that great. |

I've always loved Terry Brooks examinations of magic, it's sources, it's deadly uses, and it what it truly takes to wield or bring forth such an untamed force.
I loved the first book, Magic Kingdom for Sale-Sold.
Yet, in Princess of Landover he returned to writing the series some 10 years after the prior written novel. However, this book was not written for adults-which is incongruous with the book itself, which was self-referential to the series and characters as a whole that went back well over 20 years ago.
So, while written more to appease a 12 year old, it would leave a 12 year old cold to the prior history. Meanwhile, the 30 year old reader like myself was annoyed with the petulant teen protagonist that dominated the book, and all her faults and failings. I found little to enjoy about the muted growth she went through, especially with spending most of the book in her voice, whiny and annoying as it was.
So, I've rather left Brooks behinds. Since linking his Shannara series to origins in Oregon, I'm rather cold to his developing tales. |

I finished the book today... I'd hoped that the last 100 pages would hold the payoff, but they didn't. I enjoyed the book, but it was not remarkable to me in any way other than its length -- and even that's not really worth saying that much.
I realize that it's my fault for having expectations that were too high, but I'm still disappointed that this book didn't live up to the hype. |

| I just started book called The Doctor and The Rough Rider. It's a Weird West tale -- a blend of steampunk and the Wild West. Two of the main characters are Doc Holliday and Teddy Roosevelt -- it was seeing the latter on the cover that made me pick up the book to read the back cover blurb. Though I like steampunk, I don't particularly seek it out -- but I find Teddy Roosevelt to be an interesting person, so that's what caught my attention. |

I just finished The Erevis Cale Trology and Shadow's Witness and am delving into Shadowbred. Neil Gaiman's new book "Ocean and the end of the Lane" will be out soon, and that will probably be next after The Twilight Wars. I have a decent stack of physical and ebooks to read. |

I just finished The Doctor and the Rough Rider. It was enjoyable, but nothing spectacular. I think it suffered, a bit, from over-reliance on famous people as characters. Thomas Edison and Geronimo were prominent supporting characters in this one, and Doc Holliday and Theodore Roosevelt were the main characters. I think that without those famed individuals, the book wouldn't have worked as well.

Still working through Empire in Black and Gold.
My [very] slow pacing doesn't have anything to do with the book... but, rather, the temporal-spatial effects of SageTime which have left me with little opportunity to actually sit and read over the past fortnight. |

It's quite annoying to get to within 5 pages of the end of a book...and have to stop because your lunchbreak is over!
I'm finding this book to be enjoyable, though not great. It's got a lot of humorous moments -- like when Rizla actually refers to (and explicitly calls it) a running gag in the book, or when he points out a continuity issue in the story.
Next I think will either be Ex-Heroes, which sounds intriguing, or Casino Royale, which I have somewhat arbitrarily decided to read, despite not being all that interested in the movie James Bond.
Both books are in an Amazon order that should have been delivered today. I say "should" because I first got a text from Amazon saying they'd been delivered, then 45 minutes got another text notifying me they were on the truck and should be delivered today! This allowed me to quote a somewhat recent meme -- "Go home, Amazon, you're drunk." I was delighted at the chance to use that! |

I forgot that the shipment also included Live and Let Drood, the next of the Secret Histories books by Simon R Green. Since I just a few months ago got caught up on the previous two books, I decided that this one was next. Ex-Heroes will be next, I think. |

Truly, truly enjoyed it. Quite a bit.
Going back to read the scroll about it, I feel bad that I'm so late to the party; would have had fun discussing in that one!! |

Sanderson just noted a few days ago on his Twitter feed that he's almost finished writing the second book, with just an epilogue and some minor tweaking to carry out before he's completely done. |
