The omnibus Corum: The Prince with the Silver Hand, specifically The Oak and the Ram. I think the Fhoi Myore are my second favorite villains from Moorcock's canon, the first being Gaynor the Damned.

Ha! I must be in the minority. I avoided her other works ever since I had the misfortune of having to suffer from Arthas, which she butchered.

I quite enjoyed that one and Vampire of the Mists. Haven't read anything non-D&D from her, though.

Everything. She didn’t even pause to try to flesh him out. He’s a dead, one-dimensional creature in that book. And it didn’t help that I know almost everything about Arthas. She stuck to the lore, but probably forgot that she’s writing a book, not a script for a series of same-themed TV commercials. She jumped from one event to another without proper closure. And some famous characters appeared out of nowhere with hardly a purpose.

Hmm sounds like its a good thing I did not get that book, still from the admittedly few books I have read by her so far she does not seem to be that bad an author, not an amazing one by any means but a good journeyman author.

So I decided to stay away from Krynn for a little longer... I picked up a book called One Shot. It's the book that the movie Jack Reacher came from.

I was interested in the movie, but none of the previews showed me enough to get a feel for the plot. Like many action movies, the trailer centered on the action, and didn't give any indication if the movie had anything else in it... So I didn't see the movie. And judging by how fast it hit DVD, I'm not alone...

But I'd really enjoyed another book by the same author, so I thought I'd give it a chance... It turns out I was thinking of an author with the same last name, and not the same one.

I've barely gotten into it, and already the writing is bothering me -- it's got a lot of short, choppy sentences. "He drove the van into the slot and shut it down. Sat still for a moment. The garage was quiet. It was completely full with silent cars."

I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to finish this one... It depends on the story.

Gloriana; or, the Unfulfill'd Queen by Michael Moorcock.

Gloriana, Queen of Albion, seems to be the driving force of the plot. She embodies the notion that evil gives rise to good and that good can give rise to evil. Her trusted spymaster, Montfallcon, maintains the Realm's peace through Quire and his band of outlaws. I think this is going to backfire bigtime, as there's a bunch of lepers, whores, vagabonds, and deviants living within/behind the walls of Gloriana's castle.

Quire seems like the type to use such a horde. If you've read Moorcock, you'll recognize a couple of characters from his Eternal Champion/Jerry Cornelius stories. Interestingly, one of them who has played a hero seems quite evil in this novel.

Just finished Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb. I was impressed. So much so that I'm on to book 2 of the trilogy - Royal Assassin. I have a feeling I won't be disappointed as I enjoy these types of stories where seemingly 'good' characters turn to 'the other side' either by choice or by force.

There is quite a good deal of court politicking in this story...something I'm not too keen on if it goes on and on. And it didn't here, I think. I wonder if anyone has read the Cormyr novels (I haven't yet) and how they'd compare in that regard.

I'm intrigued enough to continue this tale, but I'm not going to read anything else by this author.

The short, choppy sentences are still there, but they're not grating on me like they did the first few pages. I find the Jack Reacher character to be something of an odd duck, too. No car, no credit, no bank accounts, prefers walking everywhere, buys one outfit for a few days, then buys a second outfit and throws away the first... Weird. I also find myself wondering how he's always got cash, since he has no visible means of support and no money in the bank.

But I'm curious about the sniper's motivations, and the ultimate plot of the bad guys... So I'm sticking with it.

I recently found myself thinking of Without Remorse, one of my fave Tom Clancy books. I may read that before returning to Krynn with the War of Souls books. I'm not sure what will be after that.

I can answer that:
Jeff did the overall plot, then Ed wrote every scene in the "present day" EXCEPT the middle-of-the-book Cat and Giogi scene (Cat is an analog of Jeff's wife Kate, and Giogi is Jeff, and Ed deferred to Jeff in writing that), while Jeff wrote all the in-the-past scenes.
As they finished chapters, they traded them and over-wrote each other. Bill Larson was the editor.
So the final result is his copyediting, over an amalgam of Ed and Jeff.
The whole thing was to "do a Michener" (as in, the immensely-popular author James Michener, who popularized multi-generational doorstop-sized "set in a place" sagas) in the Realms.
love,
THO

Really enjoyed Under the Dome (with weird King ending and all!) Hope they can stay faithful enough to it to make the tv movie good.

Finished Book 2 of Erevis Cale Trilogy. Really liking where it's going; but was a little sad to see very little of the Sembian lands through Cale's eyes, as the group traveled very far off the beaten path of normal.

I love King's weird endings. The ending to The Dark Tower is one of my all time favourites.

I myself grew bored with King years ago... The most recent book of his I've read was Dreamcatcher, and it just didn't do it for me. Although I do still like and occasionally reread It, Salem's Lot, The Eyes of the Dragon, and Firestarter.

Finally getting back to some GRR Martin. In particular, my long held off reading of Part 1 of the Third Book A Storm of Swords.

I'm hoping to have that finished up this weekend, with the possibility of visiting Paul Kemp's Deceived STAR WARS novel next.

Have any of my fellow scribes been reading the Scott Lynch books based on the character of Locke Lamora?

I ask because I've been hearing both a great lot of praise for them and plenty of excitement for the upcoming release of the third book in the series -- The Republic of Thieves. I'm just curious about what other scribes may think about these books.

Been reading only sporadically since my exams are coming up but I recently found a new manga series called Yotsubato, about an extremely curious and somewhat hyperactivity 5 year girl. Its cute and funny , just what I needed to help me relax .
