Do Half-dragons gain the energy vulnerability of their parent-type? A RedHalf-dragon gain vulnerability to Cold? I dont see it anywhere in the Half-dragon description.

No. 3.5e half-dragons get the dragon type, so they're vulnerable to spells or items that work against dragons, but they don't get any energy vulnerability. |
Doggedly converting 3e back to what D&D should be... Sigh... And now 4e as well. |

Edition matters for this question I would believe. Considering so many factors I do not believe the question can be answered from core rules, a splat book clearly might offer an answer. |
"Small beings can have small wisdom," the dragon said. "And small wise beings are better than small fools. Listen: Wisdom is caring for afterwards." "Caring for afterwards ...? Ker repeated this without understanding. "After action, afterwards," the dragon said. "Choose the afterwards first, then the action. Fools choose action first." It's not very complicated. Assuming that it's 3.5 (and I am, since there aren't any 2e half-reds), then you go by the description of the MM's half-dragon entry.
The vulnerability to elements comes from having a particular subtype, ie: reds have the Fire subtype. Half-dragons just get the dragon type, and no subtype, regardless of the parent. They could also get a vulnerability if it was mentioned in special qualities, but it isn't. So there isn't any vulnerability.
If it isn't mentioned in the description, it doesn't have it. No subtype or vulnerability is mentioned, so half-dragons don't have one. |

Oh, and on the off chance we're talking about 2e half-dragons, they don't get any vulnerabilities either. They don't necessarily get any immunities, that's a choice they make, but they don't get any vulnerability to anything (arguably not even dragon-targeting magic). |

Yes. Half-metalics first show up in the Council of Wyrms setting. They get reprinted in Dragon #206, which includes rules for half-oriental dragons as well as introducing the drow-dragon. |

Indeed. I still prefer the original, 2E half-dragons, to the 3E version. The 3E version does have some nice abilities, but the special flavor 2E's half-dragons had was gone. Making the half-dragon template be applicable to anything makes dragons seem like a bunch of Zeus wannabes that will mate with anything that sits still long enough. |

Agreed on the unfortunate implications of the template (and the way it was used in products), however I did like the power bump half-dragons got in 3e. The 2e half-dragons were very interesting creatures, but they weren't quite as powerful as the 3e versions, and most of it was developed over time. The 3e stuff was mostly front-loaded. Still, both were a great deal of fun. |

I think we can agree one this. |

I remember populating parts of my Realms with significant numbers of half-dragons when I first learned of them in 2e lore. I even went so far as to connect they, through draconic lineage, with a longer-established family of half-dragons on Krynn.
Not-so-strangely, I didn't attempt the same with the 3e interpretation of half-dragons. |

That's okay, Sage. I'm sure we've all had the occasional youthful lore indiscretion... |
