Most drow priestesses have detect lie and clairvoyance as a spell-like ability per the old 2E Drow of the Underdark. Lolth's priestesses of the various houses spy on members of their own house and other drow for any signs of heresy. Males who act independently of Lolth's dictates (and those of her priestesses) are to be sacrificed to Lolth.
I'd say the major way the clergy detects heretics is through the Test of Lolth. According to Drow of the Underdark on page 9: "The abduction of wizards at about the time they reach 6th level, and conducting a test of their loyalties is a paramount duty of the priestesses of Lolth. Testing always involves a thorough magical mind-reaming, so that no deception is possible. Drow who fail the test are transformed by the will of Lolth into driders."
I'd say between the paranoid priestesses spying, the Test of Lolth, and whatever serves as an academy for training young drow will weed most of the rebellious and weak out. The word of a high priestess is law in most Lolth worshipping communities. If she wants to condemn someone to torture and death she doesn't need a reason (noble rank can complicate this somewhat). If a priestess suspects another drow of heresy, torture of suspected drow is common and to find leads to other heretics, followed by sacrifice. |
