Okay, so this one might belong on the "stupid questions" thread but...
What sort of thing would a spectator beholder be contemplating? Subject-wise, I mean. I've been trying to come up with a subject for a spectator to be, um, speculating, and I'm drawing a blank. So any suggestions/references would be very useful.
Thanks.

How to secure a room with corners from being invaded by a Hound of Tindalos? ;) |

Hmm... I always thought they pondered questions with *answers*. Pondering the impossible opens up a whole new cupboard of topics they could waste the centuries on... |

That's just it, if you have centuries to think about stuff while you are guarding things, you might as well ponder the imponderable, because who knows, maybe a few centuries of thought will actually come up with something useful. |

You could go with one the classics: meaning of existence, nature of the universe, that sort of thing. Alternately, you could go with something based on all the "is X evil" and "will Y make my paladin fall" threads and have the spectator ponder the question of what is an absolute evil action no matter the circumstances, or whether actions are always relative. Finally, you could have it be working in its head on a mathematical proof of some kind.
Edit: This could be a good mathematical proof to use, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legendre%27s_conjecture. It isn't too hard to explain what it is trying to do, which is probably good for you if you aren't a mathematician. |

Okay... that Legendre's Conjecture made my head hurt...
I've sorta compiled a list of possible topics, ranging from the abstract (Legendre's Conjecture) to the silly (ranking all the beholders that ever lived in descending order of similarity to that particular Spectator) and if the PCs ask it what its contemplating I'll pick one at random.
Thanks for your help! |
