Well met, I'm new here, and I've only been DMing for about a year now. One of the things I do is when the characters reach about 8th level I give them a character feat, one that I choose that best fits their character, like Deft Hands, Disciple of Darkness, stuff like that.
Does anyone else do this?

You mean awarding the player with a free feat?

Looks like the Sharpblade of Amn does mean a free feat, In that case, I don not give out free feats liek that, just because they reach a certain level (sorry Bookwyrm, Kevin will have to try differently )

Unless a story award would warrant such a significant bonus, I'm not dealing out things like that. The regular feat progression is good enough no matter which class.

Don't worry, I wasn't counting on it. Personally, I think that traditional awards should be used . . . XP, gold, items. Perhaps even an item that mimics a feat, like gloves that give the same bonus as Deft Hands. But a free feat has the potential to unbalance the game, in my opinion.

While we are on the discussion of feats, has anyone ever heard of the feat point system. You can find it here:http://www.seankreynolds.com/rpgfiles/misc/featpointsystem.html

Interesting. Perhaps worth some further study. However, this guy isn't an expert on feats, it seems. For instance, he claims that metamagic feats are of more use to spontanious casters than those that prepare spells. He also seems to think that Weapon Specialization can be taken endlessly to stack with itself.

What do the DMs here say? Could it be used as a house rule, assuming the necessary work is made? (No, Mumadar, that wasn't a hint. )

I would only, and have done so once, award a feat to my players because of something that happened storywise. Otherwise they don't get any free feats at my table

As for the metamagic feats, it always struck me that those feats would be of more use to to a spontaneous caster, the sorcerer could after all say, if he had the spell slot available, that this next spell can be empowered and maximized because the situation calls for it. Whereas the wizard would have to have done so beforehand. In the essence he will just loose a higher spellslot to a spell he might not need anyway at the cost of something he could have used instead.

A wise man from Calimport once told me: "If a merchant puts sand in the flask of oil he's trying to sell you, then he isn't trying to sell you sand..."

Maybe, Bookwyrm. It's not a system I'm fond of, but it could work, if it got majorly overhauled.

What would be simpler, of course, is to upgrade feats that seem less useful. For instance, this guy's very critical of Endurance and Run, so one thing he could do is make them advance with character levels, or even combine them with something else. Or with the feat he rates the lowest, Spell Mastery, he could add on extra spells to it, define them by spell level, etc.

Personally, I find it intriguing in the sense that it's an unusual house rule. I don't really think I'd want to use it. But he does have a point with some feats being less useful than others . . . .

Well the reason I brought up the feat point system is because that is currently is what my DM is using. I'm personally not all that fond of it but one of the main reasons he chose it was to make taking seemingly useless feats for a PrC less of a loss. We are currently using it and it seems to be going well enough.

I've used the system from time to time, but only when I've felt it was necessary...and those have been rare occassions indeed. I'm not particular fond of this idea, mainly because it reminds me of another game system (which I won't mention here...Okay Alaundo...) which I didn't care much for. In fact the only reason I have used it in the past was at a players request...

Of course, he's right about weaker feats being prerequisites for cool prestige classes -- look at what's needed for the Archmage PrC.

I can understand Skill Focus (Spellcraft), but are two Spell Focuses worth it?
