Well my group decided to start a new campaign so we could do something different. I decided to be the thief since I was tired of being the heavy armored fighter and wanted to go with something different. Well the DM said to write of a background story to have ready for next session. So there is my problem. How do you write a creative background for a thief? I mean a thief can only learn his skills through working on the streets or a thieve's guild. I can't seem to find a creative way to present my thief since I'm always used to playing the valiant, honorable knight-type fighter. He is a true neuteral human 2nd level thief named Rando. Any advice?

Yes easy enough. Its easy to be a theif. Some -NOBLES- (or some people acting as them heh) are theives as well. The theif is, more an Idea to me then a class. It can be broken down into many diffrent subs. In 3.0 or "revised" as our group just calls it, I normally break them down into these groups:
The Swashbuckler: The pirate like theif that always favors luck and a good hardy time to add to his theivens and sneakens.
The Stabbing Hobo: The classic, run of the mills basically homeles care free living off the people he robs and stab type of theif- very good for NE chars sinc eits easy to do this hen your on your own. (I once played a whole chronicle NEVER once meeting the group. But everything I did became legened First starting off with my char burning down a whole fleet of ship by swimming to each one and sneaking aboard. Reason- If they took over water deep then he would REALLY never have a chance to).
The Harp: The Harp. is the person who makes deals with people and is within the socail clique. They normally focus on reading lips and such to get deadly info and such. They also will have abilities in knowledges, after all Socail Harp.s are normally our "noble born" theives.
Mr. Who am I: This is indeed a very good form of theif to play. Its fun because well basically. your not a fighting type of theif. Your also not a shanken type. You would rather clunk someone out dress up like them and act like them and get their things that way.
Assassin in the Dark: I think e have an idea where this one leads.
Anyway that is basically how I group my theives. I hope this at least helps you decide which type your's is and provides you with an idea of a background. |
"Madness you say! Do you fear me? Are you afraid of what I might do, of what I might say? What a fascinating reaction. Don't you find it somewhat encumbering?"
Piddles assumes a deep and resonant voice. "Space...the Final Frontier. These are the voyages of the starship...Garou. It's mission: to slay Wyrm creatures where they live and breed. To accumulate more Garou than the world's entire population. To produce metis like no one has before." - Piddles
"Aren't you people supposed to be doing something? Like, entertaining me, the fascist wizard?" - InleRah

Well I made a sorta swashbuckler thief that seduces noblewomen to get closer to their valuables. Well now he is on the run after being discovered and has a bounty on his head. Thanks for the help by the way. |

You seem to know quite a lot about the thief character. Something in common you think? Get a lot of practice lately? So THAT'S where my missing items have gotten to! Alright hand them over or face the consequences. |
