What it looks like is a Skull Lord- http://img.waffleimages.com/06e0ed8b25f686f81c888c964e8593f5d6933f67/skulllord.jpg

Strikes me as strange, really; the monster manual lists them as level 10 creatures, the kind of thing that would be serving under a lich or powerful necromancer.

It's probably just thrown on the cover for some variety- I doubt it'll be the major villain of the story.

What or Who is Drizzt fighting?

Tzass Tam

Here's hoping D ends him, or better yet each other in a glorious last battle

Allowing D to die and cross "the last threshold" and be te-united with his true companions. which leads to a book called ironically , The Companions.

Beyond that not being Tam, unless Tam grew a pair of extra heads while I wasn't looking, Drizzt vs Szass Tam wouldn't even be a fight. It would be Drizzt dying horribly.

On second thought, yea, lets do that.

Haha yeah. A Szass Tam Drizzt fight would be horrible for Drizzt.

I'd imagine Threshold is in reference to Drizzt crossing into the plane of shadow and rescuing his best friend. Or he snaps and goes nuts. Maybe both. I'd definitely like to see him slip into Zaknafein mode for a while. :)

I wouldn't be surprised if Szass Tam sends his servants after them. He made it clear it Neverwinter that he wants Dahlia brought to him, dead or alive. Also, Valindra is still active, and I doubt she's forgotten about them. Between the Shadovar and the Thayans, Drizzt has earned some enemies who aren't going away anytime soon. Not to mention that the drow are coming to the surface in droves (Rise of the Underdark), and any number of them would love to claim his head.

I don't doubt that Valindra's forgotten about them. In Charon's Claw she's been reduced back to a gibbering mess of crazy, and I've heard that Wizards is saving her to be a major antagonist of the Neverwinter MMO coming out next year.

I wouldn't doubt the skull lord being a servant of Tam's, but I would doubt Tam himself taking much of a personal interest in Drizzt- Drizzt is too far below him, and I just don't see any convincing way for that battle to end with Drizzt surviving that wouldn't be incredibly contrived.

I suspect Entreri would have a look on his face much like Jarlaxle's when he saw Drizzt chopping those cultists to bloody bits.

The one thing that annoyed me in the last book was Drizzt slipped back into goody two shoes mode, while Art slipped back to pragmatic evil. Both seemed to be slipping towards middle ground before they ran into each other(Art showing mercy and a bit of compassion, Drizzt showing a raw nasty streak)

On another note, it definitely looks like the picture of a skulllord. I do not remember ever reading about them. Which monster manual are they in? I have all of them.

In any case, the level a Monster manual shows can vary. There is a Gnoll that is a demon prince lol. And Szass Tam's surgeons made a heck of a lot of above average monsters in their experiments.

There are a ridiculous amount of enemies arrayed against the trio if they choose to pursue. The Shadovar don't seem to keen on revenge, but if they feel Drizzt is part of something bigger....
Likewise, Szass Tam.

Errtu and the drow of course, are a bit more likely to go afetr him with abandon

They show up in the fourth edition monster manual; I don't recall seeing them in previous editions. And true, monster level can vary(and 4e makes that easier than ever), so it could work. Just a bit of a jump, is all. What is made clear is that skull lords are very rarely their own masters- even when they're acting independently, it's usually so they can return a defeated or destroyed master to (un)life.

"Dying"? Oh, yeah.

But "terribly"? Meh, probably not. It would probably be over with in a second, with Tam shrugging it off and then moving on to bigger and better things.

I don't imagine it would last much longer than that. I just picture Tam's instant death spell on Drizzt would involve his flesh rotting off while he was still alive, or his lungs burning from the inside, or something like that. Tam's a sadist.

Raiders of the Lost Ark-style? Think Nazis opening the Ark, at the end of the movie, all melty and gory.

Depends. Power word Kill only works if you have less than 200 HP. Many other spells can be resisted. In Drizzt's defense, he probably could resist many spells.

But he can't resist a time stop, transmute earth to Mud, Cloudkill, or a forcecage/cloudkill. Tam probably would not waste a timestop unless he had multiple magical opponents tho. He didn't even use a timestop while fighting 4 Zulkirs at once, and most of them were close to Gromph Baerne/Lichdrow level(not to mention Aoth, Bareris, Mirror and several high level Monster summons helping)

I wonder if he used any of his 3 Wishes from his ring that fight.

In any case, Bambi vs Godzilla is a good approximation haha
